Internet Explorer Icon Disappears WTF
Sep 3, 2005almost every day my internet explorer shortcut disappears from my desktop. I can do a search and retreve it but then it disapers some other day.

Internet Explorer Icon - Shows Up As An Unknown File Icon
Aug 28, 2007I was wondering how to fix this problem, the icon for internet explorer in the start menu shows up as an unknown file icon. The icon on the desktop for IE shows fine but when i try to click on it, it creates a shortcut for internet explorer. if click on IE from the start menu, it opens IE with no problems.

I already baught an application that would print logs, but not info logged before I downloaded the app.

I was able to restore some of them by resetting the icon under properties.... Internet Explorer still doesn't come up and now my control panel icons do not come up either.

May 1, 2007My computer at work has been recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. Funny thing is that the Internet Explorer icon (not a shortcut) doesn't show on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties and select the IE icon to be displayed, it still doesn't show on screen. I can only find shortcuts. They're not what I need because when you right click on a shortcut, the IE properties don't show (so you can't delete history or cookies).

Jun 5, 2006HP Pavilion 6835 - OS Windows XP Home Ed.I'm still on a modem access to the internet ( yes it's true ) Lately when I connect to the internet or to check email the little blinking phone icon doesn't appear on the task bar or it may show up at first but then go away after I'm online for a while. I am online and have no trouble surfing the web but it seems my computer doesn't know I'm online. When I right click on my ISP service provider icon on the desk top it shows me an option to "Connect" but I'm already connected. The only way I can disconnect is to put the machine into it's sleepo or idle mode.

Jul 31, 2006Dell B110/ XP/ 512RAM. I always use standby mode, and it's not a problem. Except sometimes, I bring the computer out of standby and start the dialup connection as usual, but the connection icon does not appear. Things seem ok for about 10-15 minutes, then everything locks up and I have to restart. The computer functions normally after that. This happens about once a week (using the computer every day). Is there something about standby mode that cause this, or am I doing something wrong?

Nov 27, 2008when I click on an icon, say 'My Computer' on the desktop, everything but the background picture disappears, then comes back, but 'My Compute'r is not open. I'll click again and it opens. This happens if I open a program with a single click from the lower tool bar area also. I've noticed the screen will flicker once, after which invariably this situation occurs. I recently dumped and reinstalled Firefox, but before that I opened it one day and there was a one inch high field with some message I've since forgotten at the bottom of the window, and the Google logo, etc. was all shifted to the right. It's then that I reinstalled Firefox.

Sep 1, 2005The weirdest things are happening on my pc My Local disk C and D has moved right to the bottom of the list in My Computer. Nothing is wrong with them, I can access them , but they just decided one day to move to the bottom of the list. Where can I move them back to where they belong, naughty drives. And don't know if this might be related to the same little problem, but my internet connection disappears every now and then.
I can't find it anywhere, have to reboot to get it back. By this i mean the actual icon to connect to the internet.
It's not even in my network places. I run DSL, but have set it up so I connect as if it was dial up ( so I can connect and disconnect as i please) It's been happening more and more often, sometimes I have to reboot two times in a row to get it to come back, most annoying.

Jul 14, 2008I was playing Diablo 2 today and my Internet Explorer 6 icon on my desktop (icon available in desktop settings, not a shortcut) seems to have reverted to something from Internet Explorer 4 or earlier. I've tried re-applying the Windows XP theme (this worked for me on the original Diablo on my old PC when the start button did something similar) but no luck. I'm good at computing (e.g. I can edit the registry easily, follow instructions, I know quite a lot about XP) but I've never had a problem like this before. I'm gonna have to ask for help on this one.

Jun 26, 2010I am seeing a number of problems related to windows explorer:Explorer won't start from the desktop icon. Selecting it from Accessories simply returns you to the desktop. My desktop is messed up. It displays a background plus 3 items in the column down the left side - "System Tasks", "Other Places", and "Details". Previously it was just a desktop with icons. I moved the contents of "My Documents" from my "C" drive to the E drive (different partition) in case the partition was failing, but yesterday the E version of MY Documents disappeared. I'd like to get these back. Before the folder disappeared, I would open it and see a treeview of all the subfolders. Immediately afterwards, starting at the top of the tree, the "+" would all disappear, just leaving folders. Also, some of the folders were white, not yellow. I suspect the situation is a combination of screwed up privileges and registry problems, but I'm not sure where to start.
