Modem Icon Disappears But Still Connected

HP Pavilion 6835 - OS Windows XP Home Ed.I'm still on a modem access to the internet ( yes it's true ) Lately when I connect to the internet or to check email the little blinking phone icon doesn't appear on the task bar or it may show up at first but then go away after I'm online for a while. I am online and have no trouble surfing the web but it seems my computer doesn't know I'm online. When I right click on my ISP service provider icon on the desk top it shows me an option to "Connect" but I'm already connected. The only way I can disconnect is to put the machine into it's sleepo or idle mode.

I have had an issue just crop up on my dell dimension 4550 running xp pro, 2.53 p4 with 1 gig of ram. Seems that everything is fine until I connect to a web page. I can start IE, and everything is fine, utilization is 0-20%, but once I type in a url and hit go, cpu goes to 100%, eventually the web page loads after a few minutes or more(on dial up, 56k) where this only took seconds in the past. Have current virus defintions, running ms antispyware also current. If I finally disconnect from the internet, and close IE, cpu utilization goes back down. I gave up and restored from a ghost image from a month ago back when i know it was working, and it still is doing the same thing and it has me stumped. I was thinking maybe its having hard drive issues, but it works fine unless I connect to the internet. Also, I can simply bring up IE and it works fine, no pegged CPU, but as soon as I connect to my isp and try to load a web page, cpu goes to 100% and does not recover. Looking at task mngr, ieexplorer and explorer.exe are really the only things that are taking all the cpu time.

I want to connect from my home computer to my non-profit business computer that I just upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro. At home I'm running XP home and have a cable connection and the remote computer is connected with a DSL modem, there's no routers involved. I enabled RDC on the remote computer, and cleared the "Don't allow exceptions" box. The remote machine has a dynamic ip which hasn't changed in a while. The host says it's listenning on port 3389. One thing is that whatismyip.com shows my ip address as one thing where ipconfig shows a completely different number. I tried connecting from the client using both numbers. In both cases I get the message: The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled...

I have a computer that is linked to a linksys wireless router by a wireless ethernet bridge. My internet was working properly until a couple of weeks ago when it just stopped working. My internet connection says imited or no connectivity and packets are only being sent not recieved. I have connected my computer directly to the modem so it is not going through the linksys hardware at all and there is still no connection. I have checked all of my computers hardware and it says everything is working properly. Also I have made sure all the drivers are updated and working properly.

Dell B110/ XP/ 512RAM. I always use standby mode, and it's not a problem. Except sometimes, I bring the computer out of standby and start the dialup connection as usual, but the connection icon does not appear. Things seem ok for about 10-15 minutes, then everything locks up and I have to restart. The computer functions normally after that. This happens about once a week (using the computer every day). Is there something about standby mode that cause this, or am I doing something wrong?

when I click on an icon, say 'My Computer' on the desktop, everything but the background picture disappears, then comes back, but 'My Compute'r is not open. I'll click again and it opens. This happens if I open a program with a single click from the lower tool bar area also. I've noticed the screen will flicker once, after which invariably this situation occurs. I recently dumped and reinstalled Firefox, but before that I opened it one day and there was a one inch high field with some message I've since forgotten at the bottom of the window, and the Google logo, etc. was all shifted to the right. It's then that I reinstalled Firefox.

The one problem i usually have after i recover from the BSOD is am always unable to get back on line. all the other computers in the work group is usually still connected to the internet but whichever one of the computers that went down because of the BSOD, I always had to get the professional to reset my connnection on that particular pc/laptop is. So folks how can i fix this problem.Present systemis now up and running but no internet connection even when the icon shows that i am connected.

I have G speedbooster router and setup MAC address and WPA with password. My laptop can access fine. I have emachines t2882 with xp and USB wireless g speedbooster adapter. I can access internet when plugging in computer lan to lan on router. When using wireless usb, I key in code and says I am connected and green lights show, but when pulling up explorer, it says no connected? Device manager shows device is working properly.I tried setting up automatically assign IP's on the computer and got same result, and put in specific IP I have assigned from the router to this computer with same results as well.Again, looks like I am connected, but explorer does not seem to recognize I am connected.

Due to my problems with error 638 and being disconnected frequently I went into control panel,clicked on phone&modem options only to find that my modem isn't accounted for at all! There is a blank where my modem details should be and yet I am on line when I'm doing it! Help! I uses a laptop as a workstation. i uses it to get online from here at the school and at home. Recently, i can surf fine from work but when gets home when i plugs into network and gets all the signs of connectivity but when using the internet explorer, i only gets the "Work Offline" option and is unable to use the internet. I have a wireless connection set up as well as the regular ethernet connection. I usually only uses the ethernet port and rarely uses the wireless connection but both are running simultaneously.

I need to uninstall my old modem before I install the software for my new modem. Problem is when I try to uninstall the old one I get an error box come up saying "cannot open bitmap". I've rebooted in safe mode and tried it but i get the same error box.

the dial up worked fine until i took my computer to the high speed net at work. when i got the computer back i hooked it back up and dialed up it connected then i tried to view my webpage. it said page cant be displayed. my downloader was disconnected to. i had all the signs i was not connected to the internet but i was.

Started only yesterday, IE just disappears off my desktop, whether minimised or maximised. I have rebooted, it still does this ocassionally? Any ideas what could be causing this. I am well scanned for virus, ant-spy, malware, and keep my registery clean with PC DOC,Cleaner and Cleanup.

I've searched everywhere for an answer to this but no luck yet. My Start>Run works just fine in my WinXP Home Ed but I have several small CLI apps (.exe) that flash their own black screen and disappear leaving nothing! No sign of the process either. One of them (MBRWizard) seems to be a very popular app, I've downloaded several versions, always the same: the screen disappears as soon as I press the "any key" that it wants before it shows me more options.I find it hard to believe it's a problem with the app - people seem to be using it all over. If it's something I need to configure I'd sure like to know what it is.

I have a HP Pavilion A1624N computer, running Windows Media Center 2005.
AMD 64 x 2 Processor 2.0 GHz, 1 Gig of RAM.
All of a sudden yesterday morning when I right clicked on my desktop and un-checked Show Desktop Icons (to take a print screen for my friend) the problem started. This worked fine, I did the print screen and saved it in paint no problem. But when I right clicked again and then chose Show Desktop Icons, they came back, but my wallpaper disappeared. I have a second hard drive that's started spontaneously dissappearing lately. The first time it happened it came back after a reboot (or two?). This time it doesn't come back at all. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 2.4GHz running Windows XP Home (yeah, I know), with 512MB Ram, two 80GB internal drives and an external SCSI VideoRaid. I'm pretty sure I've got the cable selections to master and slave but might have cable select jumpered (have to double check).
The even viewer shows Errors 9 and 11 in both this case and the former occurance. I thought maybe the drive was going bad but it's less than a year old and had no problems when it was the second drive in my PIII. It's a Western Digital 7200RPM special edition with 8MB cache and has previously performed flawlessly.

I recently started having problems with my Recycle Bin running Windows 2000 O/S. When I delete something it just disappears and does not go to my recycle bin. It was working fine up until yesterday and now it always stays empty no matter how much I delete. I checked the global setting and the "Do not move deleted files to Recycle Bin" is unchecked.

when I try to carry out certain tasks when right clicking. For example if I have a picture open and try and right click on it, it dissapears, the programme i am using will close and the screengoes blank. It then re-appears on the desk-top screen. This is driving me mad. I cant carry out any right click operations like save as or delete!

I was wondering how to fix this problem, the icon for internet explorer in the start menu shows up as an unknown file icon. The icon on the desktop for IE shows fine but when i try to click on it, it creates a shortcut for internet explorer. if click on IE from the start menu, it opens IE with no problems.

no IE icon on desktop or in programs. i have internet access through verizon. i recently got windows update to install IE7 in the hope that would restore the icon/program but the only way i can access the internet is via the verizon browser. i clearly installed IE7 because now the "sidebar" of my verizon browser says that "sidebar i currently not compatible with IE7...". so why can't i get the IE7 icon in my program list or desktop?

I have a new Western Digital 120 GB hard drive that I have slaved. I have formatted this drive in Windows XP. When I boot up sometimes the second drive is not there (D: Drive I go to: Control Panel System Hardware Device Manager Disk DrivesScan for hardware changes Once I do this the drive appears and is accessible, but the drive is very slow to copy data.

XP Pro SP2. In Network Connections folder I had an icon for a dial-up connection (which I use), a LAN connection (for wired NIC), A Wireless connection (for built in wireless card), and a 1394 connection (firewire port that XP likes to list as a connection). The NIC, wireless, and 1394 I keep set to disabled when I'm not using them. I enabled the wireless card and set up ad-hoc connection to another laptop with built-in wireless, so I could transfer some files between the two.
After I was finished, I disabled the wireless connection again. My dial-up networking connection disappeared from the Network Connections folder, and it's shortcut icon on desktop disappeared. It still showed in IE Intenet Options, and I could dial-up from there, but when I did, no computer icons appear in the taskbar, leaving me no way to disconnect except by pulling the phone cord............

Every few seconds the cursor disappears and I have to move the mouse back to where I was typing and left click. When this happens the browser area also turns grayish until I left click. So frustrating! Have tried all the suggestions I have found online such as unclicking the "hide pointer while typing" box.
