now i cant get any sound when i click on 'sounds and audio devices' in control panel no audio device is foundcmi audio config doesnt even open up when i click on volume control i get the following message:
'no active mixer devices available, to install mixer devices, go to control panel, click printers and other hardware and then click add hardware'
I click on install, they install, I reboot - then, hey presto, they're back again!! I know the easy way is to turn off automatic updates - but, surely, there's a way around this?

I have also tried removing the card, starting up the pc, rebooting, and then returning the card with no luck. so i went to msn and did the verify ( windows genuine advantage ) verification just to see if she has done it so we passed the test ,Its valid so no problem there .this is a dell machine >Dimension 5000< only a few months old, 3 at tops . she doesnt even use the net much . its a machine for picture editing .
any ideas why we cannot get the updates ..
also 1 time when i was on this machine surfing . this dell window poped up and showed something about updates , like it has over ridden Windows automatic updates . but i cannot find it anywhere on this machine

I had to do a repair on my Windows XP Pro system. When finished I went to Microsoft to check for updates and had them download. When the system tried to install the updates it fails at the Windows Update Installer V3.1. All other updates will now not install. What is my course of action to remedy this problem?

I've lost the system recovery disk buta friend gave me theirs. when I inserted it I was asked for a serial number and duly put in the one on the bottom of the laptop but it was rejected.Nothing would work so I exited the menu and went out and purchased a brand new copy of the O/S. However when I put the disc in it keeps taking me back to the old screen which asks me for a serial number and it wont accept the one form the disk I purchased.

I have been manually updating these for well over a year now. I would really like to find out and fix why win update doesn't find these critical updates automatically.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently had a corrupt file and ended up doing a full repair of XP-home. That wiped out IE7-- replacing it with IE-6. I had some trouble downloading updates so replaced IE-7---- Now almost everything works fine. The exception is that I get notified that "Updates Are ready for your computer-- Click here to install these updates". I click on it and it looks like the updates are being installed-- just to be notified that "These updates were not able to be installed" (Words close to that). A few seconds later I am informed that "Updates are Ready for your computer" And the cycle continues. I have tried "Custom" (my normal way of doing them) and "Express" (in frustration)--- all to no avail.

At first there were several items failing to be updated but as I did them individually, this one seems to be the trouble source.I install using automatic updates, express and manual, with no luck. So then I head over to the microsoft download website and try installing from there, but still no luck. My little yellow exclamation point shield has camped out permanently on my task bar, and Microsoft seems to think this update is critical to the safety & performance of my pc. View 6 Replies View RelatedAs of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.
Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".
I have a genuine XP pro system (Laptop) , already WGA verified. The problem is since 3 days I cannot install updates. Automatic updates are being downloaded there are altogether 76 updates to be installed, windows is downloading them after initializing them it takes 30 sec and it says the following updates(the 76 updates) cannot be installed. The updates were working fine before. Please look at the screenshot. Another reason could be I have recently changed my drive name from C to Z then switched it back to C. All the programs are working fine except the 'updates cannot be installed error'.

I have an Acer Aspire laptop with WinXP and all the usual rubbish installed, I have had this since around September of last year and got it for a little less as the packaging was opened 'basically someone decided they didn't want it?' i'm more than happy with it and have installed lots to keep me and family happy - the problem i've got is it won't update via Windows Update: i get an error message:

Automatic Updates or manual updates, it doesn't seem to make a difference, I have downloaded all the critical/high priority updates from Microsoft Update, but every time I try to install them, the message reads simply 'Some of the updates could not be installed' (ie: ALL of them! - see attached images)

My computer slows down to a point that I cannot use it at all. The problem started last Sunday, right after I uploaded pictures I also noticed that sometimes after the computer comes back to normal updates are being installed.
