I am trying to install a network printer with ip address 192.168.40.11 but STANDARD TCP/IP PORT is not available in the windows xp to add.But when I try to install any local printer also I am getting the error postedOperating system windows xp sp3
User has admin privileges
I installed a few programs last night and I lost all my admin privileges. I'm using an account that has admin rights, and yet these happened:
- run button in the start menu has disappeared.
- turn off button has also disappeared; I can only log off
- I cannot run the task manager when I press ctrl-alt-del
- some sys tray applications stopped being started up with the windows (skype, msn messenger, icq, adobe lightroom, daemontools)
- when I load Adobe Photoshop CS2, I get this message that says "You are not allowed to continue because your account does not have administrator privileges".
- I'm sure there're more things waiting to be discovered................
Im trying to uninstall a program on works comp but even though ive signed in as myself(administrator account) and the default administrator account. but error message about having no administrator priveleges. Three other computers set up same time and exactly the same users are working fine. I can log in as Administrator, no problem. Running winxp pro sp2.

When I gave the laptop to our IT department to configure the unit as a corporate network laptop, I had set up a local admin account on the unit. However, when the system was returned to me the local admin account on the laptop had been changed to Debugger Users group. Anyway, in addition to my local Admin account, corporate IT also has a local admin account that they use to administer corporate network computers. I removed my local admin account from the Debugger Users group hoping to move it into the local admin users group. However, this is not panning out. Although, my local admin account will log on locally onto the laptop, it currently has no local group membership on the laptop. I think I now have two options: Call IT Dept. to remotely log onto my laptop and move the account I created as a local admin account which currently has no local group membership or use linux utility to remove the password set on their local group account, in other to have administrator privileges on my laptop so that I can move my local admin account (currently with no local group membership) to local administrators group on my laptop and ask them to reset that password after or call IT Dept to do it.

View 17 Replies View RelatedWe have our own printer driver which basically prints any document to our application (just like Adobe). Our installer creates a named printer port in HKEY_LOACL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTPorts (eg. OurPort). We stop the spooler service and then start it too to refresh the list of ports.
Then we create the printer by running this command from within installer.
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Our Printer Name" /f "Path of the inf file" /r "OurPort" /m "Printer driver name" /Z
Once all this is done, we try printing any document to this printer we created and it does print in our application. But this happens only when the logged on user is either admin or a power user.
When we try to login with a local user, and he tries to print a document to our application via our printer, it fails. We can see the document in the printing queue but it shows error-printing.
Sequence of events: Win XP Home SP 0 problem began with spyware, which I removed [ using spybot 1.3, ad-aware SE, HiJackThis 1.99, CWShredder, About:buster I tried to update to SP1, from the Windows update site, as well as from a Win XP SP1 update disk, but received an error. In Event Viewer, Windows Update Agent, Event ID 20, so I renamed C:Windowssystem32catroot2 to c:windowssystem32old_catroot2, & retried the SP1 installation. I want to clean my computer and decided to install XP. After booting from cd I chose 'install XP' and enter. After a moment I got a blue screen saying windows failed to discover a hardrive. My computer works perfectly.When I go to my comp's bios my primary IDE master is my dvd drive. I have no primary slave, or secondary master/slave. I see no SATA options.I have a Maxtor 64160m0 SCSI hardrive.

It never is the same files, it has been about 15-20 different files on about 5-6 tries of installation.It asks you if you want to retry and sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes you have to skip. It says it could be the windows disk, but the windows disk works fine in my test machine and I can install windows perfectly over there.

But it was corrupted in the middle because of error "The file 'asms' on the Windows Professional XP CD-Rom is needed". I couldn't go on. The installation is halted. View 14 Replies View Related1) While I originally started with XP SP2, now I have a XP SP3 CD, with the SATA drivers successfully incorporated via nLite. SAME PROBLEM, even with the BIOS and XP Setup recognizing the HDDs on SATA ports instead of IDE channels.
2) I downloaded the Windows 7 Beta 64 bit, got thru the install to the point of "Updating Registry" and then the system lost power as with XP and did a soft restart.I am currently downloading to Ubuntu Linux to see if that also fails, at which point I definitely know I have a hardware issue. The question is: Which component? I am leaning towards PSU, with mobo in second. Please any insight from the pros would help.
Just wondering if anyone else has had issues with this update? I have a XP Pro machine that won't take this update. I tried un installing all the .net stuff and installing the updates one at a time from .net 1 up to .net 3. I have got the machine to take up to the .net 2 sp1. It doesn't seem to like the .net 3 though. Anyone have a quick fix, reg hack or digital slege hammer to make this .net 3 to install properly?

View 5 Replies View RelatedDue to several fundamental errors in my Windows installation, today I decided to make a repair install of my Windows XP Home installation. I booted into my Windows disc, did all the normal stuff, and it seemed to go fine. At the end of the text-based stuff, it gave me the instruction to reboot, having moved the files it needed to the HDD, I believe. Anyway, the jist is that the text-based stuff seemed to go fine, I rebooted as instructed, and then did NOT click to boot from the CD (which, I believe, was the right choice). I let Windows load normally but... no GUI based stuff came up to finish off the repair installation, and consequently, what I've done seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

I was attempting to set the program to allow me to bypass the startup screen (the screen that asks for your password and asks you which user accout you want to use). I did this because I only had one user, and had no password. But when I would boot it still made me click on the users name.
So in Powertoys I selected Logon, Autologon. I then checked the box "automatically logon at system startup". It asked me to create a password, so I created a password..
I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.

They decided to unistall photomanger and it starts uninstall them says fatal error. I got a win 16 subsystem error when trying to reinst printer software. I downloaded the printer driver. When istalling it prepares the install wizard and copies the needed files, then it stops installation and closes, no error message.

Towards the end of the installation, the computer rebooted due to a bad battery and the AC was accidently unplugged. Now right when I get into Windows before the login screen, the computer just reboots and I can barely see a flash of a STOP BSOD error but don't have any time to read it. I can get into safe mode and do stuff. I tried reinstalling the software and drivers but it gives me an error. I can't uninstall anything because it doesn't see anything installed. What can I do? Its a USB printer BTW.

Shutting down and restart corrects the problem-but only for awhile and then the same thing happens over again. I reloaded software to no avail. any help?

it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"
In the printer and faxes window there are printer icons listed in addition to my default HP Printer. Whiy are they listed there and what do they do since you can't use them...or can you and if so, how? Two that are listed on my computer are:

I bought a new HP printer today. I had a hotfix installed at some point that shutdown and woke up my printer at shutdown and startup. The new printer isn't affected by this hotfix. Does anyone know where I can get this patch?

PC2 connects and sees printer when I cable the USB DIRECTLY to the printer instead of going thru a switch. Therefore, I know PC2 can print. Have tried 2 different switches. An A/B data switch and Belkin's 4x1 USB Peripheral Switch F1U401. PC1 works with both switches but PC2 does not.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run cmd.exe with admin privileges, but I get "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." I get this error on two of my three XP PCs. I was able to run this last week on at least one of the PCs where it is now not working. I can't find any obvious reason why it no longer works. Any suggestions what to check?
ADDITIONAL INFO1. All three computers are running the same firewall/virus software.
2. All three are XP SP3 and at the same MS patch level.
I need to run my application as administrator for any limited user account that logs on. I thought I could do it in registry(HKLM) but it says it still doesnt have permissions to run. Has anyone else got any ideas? such a hassle to sit down and type my password in for each user to run this program.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe've had to change our address space and therefore the printer address has changed. I've changed the address on all but one computer. On this particular computer when I try to edit the TCP/IP port I get the message:
"An error occurred during port configuration. Access is denied."
If I try to create a new port I can select that I want it to be a Standard TCP/IP Port and then it tells me:
"Specified port cannot be added. Access is denied."
I have connected 3 new PC's on a P2P network, and connected a HP 4610 Color Laser Printer via a JetDirect 175 print server. On one PC, I can only print from the Administrator account. The other 2 computers work fine. On the one that is having issues, when printing a test page I receive a "Failed to Print" error mesage, and looking in the printer jobs menu, it shows that there was an error printing. The
Administrator account can print fine from this machine.
The user accounts are "restricted user" accounts on all 3 computers.
All 3 computers are exactly the same type, and all have the latest
updates.
After a system crash all printers are gone and when trying to add a printer I get the message:
"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running" After starting the service manually and trying to add a printer I get the message:"Operation could not be completed" and the service is stopped again.I looked at some of the previous answers and related topics (like article nine, and Q324757
