View 3 Repliesi have two computers, a desktop and a laptop. I use my desktop primarily for storage (500GB total storage) and burning (2 16x DVD burners). I primarily connect to it through firewire and work on it via TightVNC using my laptop. Recently though, my laptop has been acting funky. The status window shows no IP address or subnet mask (i have them manually configured) at all. But when I go to properties, it has my configurations listed there.My wireless and wired connections are working fine, but the last time this happened I had to reformat, which I did last week and would rather not have to do that again. Because it works fine after format
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've recently moved home and after contracting an internet service I'm unable to connect to the network.We have two laptops here:
- One is Windows Vista which is able to connect without a glitch;
- The other (my laptop) is a Window XP with SP3 which is unable to connect.
- The wireless modem is a THOMSON TCW710.
- My laptop is set for obtaining the IP address automatically.
- When I start windows, I get an IP address, the DHCP server and the DNS servers.
- This is the output of the ipconfig /all command
i get one problem sorted with screwed up ram and another bites me. i think i'll either become a computer tech guy or gain a computer phobia. Ok, so my problem is this;
1. my wireless software and hardware seems to work fine but can't find my hub to gain access to.
2. It says that if i have used another program to access the connection use it. Although i have not.!!
3. I went into advanced settings and clicked use windows to access...didn't work.
4 I disabled and enabled the other settings to kick start my connection. .
5. however there is a connection and i do have data transfer but no connection.
6.i am still getting the same response, which is;
No ip address or any other information regarding my connection.
How do you find the IP address on a computer and how do you keep it safe from others accessing this information on your computer?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got three exactly the same computers (HP and also all the components are identical). They came with new, unformatted, HD's. When I got them I formatted the HD's and installed Windows XP Professional (no SP) and everything worked fine.I now wanted to make a fresh start, so I formatted the HD's once again and installed Windows XP Professional (SP3). After this install I noticed that a number of devices weren't working. I checked the device manager and saw the audio device, ethernet port and video controller in the list, but with a yellow exclamation mark. It saw the devices, but it didn't install the drivers.

When I hook up my modem through usb it works fine but unable to utilize my full download speed capabilities. Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange.

So I pressed home button of my key board so the My Computer window converted to a web page. But after that the address bar disappeared. View 3 Replies View RelatedWe have run across a problem here with APIPA addressing. After we install Windows updates, Windows assigns an APIPA address in the 169.254.x.x range, instead of getting an address from the DHCP server. The effect is that the computer loses connectivity with the network and the Internet. You can confirm this problem by running an IPCONFIG and checking for an address in the 169.254 range.
Releasing and renewing the address does not correct the problem. Assigning a static IP address resolved the issue. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, we found a registry hack that will disable APIPA addressing on the computer, and this does correct the problem so the computer can connect to the network again. We assume that the problem is a result of an update from last Tuesday, but we have not determined which update is the problem. We are still looking. Our concern is that as DHCP leases expire with computers in the field, that this effect may appear. If you get calls for loss of network or Internet connectivity, have the user run IPCONFIG, and if they have an APIPA address, the registry hack is outlined in KB article

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt worked but he didn't have any of the disks that came with it. It is a Gateway and looks like it has hardly been used. When we turned it on it tried to boot at Windows XP Professional setup and asks for the CD that XP Pro comes on. Which of course we don't have. On closer inspection we realized that the computer originally had Windows ME installed on it and someone must have started to install XP Pro on it and either got an error or they stopped before setup could finish. Needless to say I can't get what little I know to work to fix it. I can't get a prompt and it won't even boot in safe mode. I have Windows Xp Home Edition on the computer that I am currently using and hoped that maybe the missing files may have been something they had in common. They start out with I386, like I386OEMBIOS.CAT.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway computer that’s about 4 years old running Windows 98. It includes a Gateway VGA monitor (model EV700). I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows using their resource CD’s. Everything is fine now except the monitor will only display the lowest resolution settings. I have tried to change the resolution through the display icon in control panel, but it will not allow me to increase the resolution. I have even gone to the Gateway web site and download the latest driver for this monitor, but still have the same results.
As a result, the monitor will no longer display graphics of any kind while on the internet or while working with photo imaging software.
My boot.ini files on my 2 intentional operating systems have been modified to look, it seems to me, identical (see 1st attached thumbnail). First 2 for the intended ini, the second the old improper, though still currently functional, boot.ini.old. Both of these are on separate partions on the first internal hard drive, and I have tried turning off my 1 external during boot-up as well as disabling my 2nd internal on the "boot settings", with the same results.The default should be the "Graphics" system, according to the Boot.ini

Its a tough problem because its very hard to duplicate the error.

These are the same files that show up in Task manager as not responding. Her Microsoft Antispyware icon when double clicked never starts the application.
