May 23, 2005Lately i've been battling a virus infection with a w32.spybot.worm. Thanks to symantec antivirus corporate edition (which can detect but never repair) and microsoft antispyware software i've eliminated it. Yet today a new infection popped up from a file "eraseme_12604.exe" in my system32 (i dont know how it got there). I figured I might as well enable the XP firewall to prevent new infections from happening, but when i went to the firewall settings they were set to OFF, and all options (including the ability to turn it on) were greyed out. Did the virus modify my registry somehow and how can i remidy the situation. I am running windows XP prof with sp2

Jul 28, 2005I connect to my home computer from work using RDP. I'm curious as to what encrption is goign on between the two comptuers. If my IS department decides to start to capture packages exactly what will they see? I write emails, on my remote machine and surf the net occasionally. Does XP provide secure 18 bit encrption between the two comptuers? If not is there any 3rd party utilities that I can run in order to accomplish this?

I'm using a fairly new install of Windows XP SP2 on my laptop.
Clicking on "New Connection Wizard", then select the "Connect to my
Workplace" option which would normally allow me to create a VPN connection,
is greyed out.
I've googled on this problem and found issues suggesting that
1. XP SP1 be re-installed (I'm upto SP2, which I've tried re-installing
without success)
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionTelephony be
deleted (have tried this, rebooted, no success)
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesRasManPPPEAP25
and 26 (tried this, rebooted, no success)
4. Find SR.INF and re-install (tried, rebooted, no change)
Having tried all of the above, I've had no joy at all. The VPN option in
"New Connection Wizard" remains greyed out.
The problem did appear to begin when I did a System Restore after a bad s/w
installation.
In addition - when I try to re-start the Remote Access Connection Manager
Service I receive Error 5: Access is Denied. I'm logged on as a Local
Administrator. I believe this is related.

May 7, 2003If you have ever used a computer at a high school or college, then you might have seen that pesky software that prevents you from installing any programs or web content filters that prevent you from accessing instant chat sessions. Well here is a way to send instant messages to your friends over such networks as long as you have their ip or the name of the computer on the network. An easy way to find a computer's ip address is to type cmd in the run box on your start menu. This will start the command prompt. Type "ipconfig /all" with a space between "ipconfig and /all".That will list the computer's ip address along with other network specs. Now that you have the ip of that computer, you may send instant messages to it.Go to the run command in your start menu. Type cmd in the box which will open the command prompt just like above.Type: net send "ip address" message. If the computer you were trying to send a "Hello" message to had the ip address of 127.10.1.1,you would type "net send 127.10.1.1 Hello" Additionally, it is possible to use a wild card such as * in the ip address parameter. Example: net send * message
The above command will send your message to every computer on your subnet. This is great for system administrators to send out messages to all windows computers on the network notifying them that you are going to be taking down the server or something. However, if you are a student and feel like pulling a prank at school by sending some message across the school network, you will screw yourself. With today's zero tolerance policies in schools, you will be suspended possibly even expelled. Trust me; it's happening all over the USA.

Nov 15, 2008I am trying to make a flash drive bootable into wxpro. I have several format tools inclucing hp format tool. When I tried to access 98 startup disk to format my rally drive I got the message "no media". I copied the files to another area and received the same message. I then tried the format tool in xp. I cannot access the greyed out area to include msdos sys files. I have a old dos 6.0 prog that I use at work. I have been able to get the prog to work in 98. The use of a flash drive would be excellent if I can get it to work. To access/remove computer is a hassle and if I could just plug in a flash drive in would be excellent. So far I havent been able to get the drive to boot into xp.

Out of a sudden, my language bar on the taskbar was completely empty. in "text services and input languages" The language bar is greyed. I managed to set a key combination in order to switch back and forth beetwen French German and english. (Shift+Left Alt) is not working any more. When I run Winword (Office 2003) , the correct language is displayed in the status bar but Winword does not seem to recognize the language correctly what was the case before.

Secure Site Access Denied - Restoring System Negative Results
Jun 10, 2005Running XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).

Contents Of My Docs Have Gone
Sep 10, 2007Over the last week on this laptop i've had lockups and freezes.Thought i'd try using WinsockxpFix.I'd ran out of discs so just backed up everything important to My Docs.Downloaded and ran the fix and had the message to create a registry backup...then another message saying the directory to store a registry backup to didn't exist did i want to create it.i clicked yes and had the message that all the files could not be deleted.Didn't understand that so i just cancelled the fix and exited.Now My Docs are completely empty...everything has gone! they are not in the recycle bin either...have restored back to the earliest point i can but still My Docs folder is empty.Is there an app to recover these with...is there anything i can do...there's weeks of course work there.

May 23, 2008I just installed WindowsXP SP3. After that I loose the access to the Documents and settings/username/ contents. The drawers are there (antivirus scanners parse them) but I can't navigate them neither in explorer neither with command dos emulation.
I obviously set all the check in window-options to see hidden files. I use Firefox but SP3 installed Explorer on my comp.
