Data Shows Vista More Secure Than Other
Nov 3, 2008
In XP machines, Microsoft's own software contained 42 percent of the vulnerabilities attacked, while 58 percent were in third party software. For Vista machines, Microsoft's software had 6 percent of the vulnerabilities attacked, with third-party software containing 94 percent of the flaws.http://www.pcworld.com/article/153 [...] =nl_dnxnws. They should do a 64-bit focused study.I wonder what that would look like.

I have recently had my laptop stolen and have gone back to an old laptop which has XP; Having loaded my work from a backup DVD I am unable to open any of my word documents / Excel documents / (some Photoshop documents) When I try and open it it says it is 'wrong type of document' or 'file is not in a recognizable format' and their icons are strange and dont look the same.I am hoping that this is just somthing silly that I have forgotten to do as it seems strange that I cannot move the documents backwards through the operating systems!

A USB 2.0 Lexar Card Reader and when the card reader is connected to my computer before booting up, I get this: USB Storage Device: Lexar Media Inc. PCI device listing, Verifying DMI Pool Data, Boot from CD. But when this card reader is disconnected before booting my computer, the computer boots up normally. I would like to know why I have to disconnect this card reader everytime I want to boot up the computer.

I connect to my home computer from work using RDP. I'm curious as to what encrption is goign on between the two comptuers. If my IS department decides to start to capture packages exactly what will they see? I write emails, on my remote machine and surf the net occasionally. Does XP provide secure 18 bit encrption between the two comptuers? If not is there any 3rd party utilities that I can run in order to accomplish this?

It has been suggested that using a proxy server will help to make my system more secure while I'm online. I looked at some of the suggested free proxy servers, but they seemed not to work well if at all. The explanations were well enough for me to follow but my system ran exceedingly slow or the sites I tried to access disallowed this. So I want to find a reliable site to buy one. I came across HIDE MY IP site and it looked easy to follow and was not overly expensive. My main thought was, how can I tell when a site which offers programs is actually not unscrupulous?

If you have ever used a computer at a high school or college, then you might have seen that pesky software that prevents you from installing any programs or web content filters that prevent you from accessing instant chat sessions. Well here is a way to send instant messages to your friends over such networks as long as you have their ip or the name of the computer on the network. An easy way to find a computer's ip address is to type cmd in the run box on your start menu. This will start the command prompt. Type "ipconfig /all" with a space between "ipconfig and /all".That will list the computer's ip address along with other network specs. Now that you have the ip of that computer, you may send instant messages to it.Go to the run command in your start menu. Type cmd in the box which will open the command prompt just like above.Type: net send "ip address" message. If the computer you were trying to send a "Hello" message to had the ip address of 127.10.1.1,you would type "net send 127.10.1.1 Hello" Additionally, it is possible to use a wild card such as * in the ip address parameter. Example: net send * message
The above command will send your message to every computer on your subnet. This is great for system administrators to send out messages to all windows computers on the network notifying them that you are going to be taking down the server or something. However, if you are a student and feel like pulling a prank at school by sending some message across the school network, you will screw yourself. With today's zero tolerance policies in schools, you will be suspended possibly even expelled. Trust me; it's happening all over the USA.

Or something sneaky trying to look like it so I'll let it in? Just to be safe, I OK'd the recommended Quarantine. Is that right, or should I let it out of uarantine?

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?
Thank you,
Al

Running XP on a Sony PVC-RX770 (3 years old). I can never get to a secure site. Message says to re-set security levels which I have done over and over. I have tried restoring system to earlier times with negative results. Sony did not help. I can't even load Norton, buy things, see my bank statements, etc. Here may be a clue. I am sometimes told my system won't accept ActiveX code. I am also told I need to add a drive. I press continue and system runs OK (except the the security problem).

I was dual booting XP and Vista but didn't want Vista anymore. So I got rid of Vista, and that's all said and done now. Problem is, the boot loader is still coming up telling me to choose between "Earlier Version of Windows" and "Windows Vista". How to I get rid of it without using Vista's boot manager?

I'm currently running Vista on a raid 0 array, and want to dual with XP. I have two partitions, one with vista and the other that I tried installing XP on. After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. If I remember correctly, after it restarts it goes strait into windows setup. This happens every time I try restarting, but I can get back into vista by putting the hard drive to boot first. In vista I can see the other partition where XP was installed, and inside is just a folder titled WINDOWS and it seems like all the windows files are in there

I had a bad HDD failure which corrupted part of my WinXP OS with the result that I am unable to boot into Windows. I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
