My computer had been getting slower over the course of a few months, and after telling a friend he told me to change my antivirus software, as the current version had expired. I switched my antivirus software from McAfee to Nod32, however on restarting mt system certain things were not working. I decided to restart my computer, but on choosing to shutdown i was prompted with an error message saying "explorer.exe was not responding".
A few weeks ago it started and got worse now that Windows shows the message "EXPLORER.EXE is not responding" during logoff/shutdown after it has been up for a couple of hours. After 2 or 3 minutes showing this message (I resist to abort the program), heavy hard drive activity and a low CPU load of approx. 5-10%, mainly kernel time, it continues and shuts down fine. Task manager shows that nothing much is happening during this 2-3 minutes except for page faults of explorer.exe thus I assume it must be some paging performance problem. Generally, after these 2-3 minutes explorer.exe has accumulated another 20000 page faults before the system continues which seems a little bit much for a 25MB process. Sometimes, the heavy swapping for 2-3 minutes also happens while the system is running. The computer got a fresh XP Prof. SP2 setup from CD about two months ago. 512 MB main memory from which there is according to task manager 1/3 still available and the total memory usage is still far from that, too.
I am running XP professional. When the computer is booting up it stops and comes up with an error message "explorer.exe is not responding" and will not let me into the desk top. What do I do to get past this error message and how do I fix it.
Windows XP Home SP1 Laptop, about 18 months old about 6 months ago, problem at shutdown / restart = explorer.exe not responding.I have been working on the PC, today, for spyware / virus issues. The owner mentioned this issue as well.I have searched on: "windows xp" "explorer.exe" shutdown "not responding" OR hangs Found this one http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php. I need to find out which optical drives Sony has used.It is not a USB issue; problem occurs with no USB devices connected. I'll run ram diags, just for grins.Nothing in event viewer nor in Windows error reporting.
Well ever since I installed Bitdefender 9, it seems that my computer has gone slow. It starts up quick and all but its when i'm browsing, or choosing to bring up another program on the toolbar, or to start a new program. Its like the programs arn't responding and then I eventually have to wait for everything to work again, its a real pain in the butt because I tried deleting Bitdefender and it won't let me because i get a "Write to folder C:WINDOWSInstaller" message and same with ANY other program I try to uninstall in Add/Remove Programs.
I have been having this problam for a while but I just ignored it until now, because it is pissing me off. If I open a folder(any) some times it wont open, explorer.exe just closes and opens by itself. Some times I have to go to Task nager>Processes>explorer.exe right click on it and End Process Tree and then I have to go and open it using "New Task.." in Task Manager. Then it lets me open a folder but if I don't use the folder for a while and then start using it or close it and then wait and open another folder the same thing happens.
I'm getting quite annoyed at the problems that I think Explorer is causing.Things generally run fine until I open Explorer if I need to copy files etc. Most times, but not all the time, it will stop repsonding and i need to end the task in task manager. The rest of the system works without problem.I have attached a Hijack This log file. Even when the log file opened (txt format) it stopped resoponding and I had to use Task Manager to close the log file.
I think i have IE 6 but when i open up a drive or folder maybe like on a spare partition where i work with movies and music. I get a message saying Internet Eplorer has encountered a problem and must close so it closest out my whole "My Computer". Why is it doing that too me? How can i fix the problem? Should i downgrade to an earlier version then 6 or should i upgrade? What my computer have to do with IE? I appericate if someone can reply back ASAP and help me troubleshoot.
hello i got xp with all updates latest java and flash player but i got problems with some pages especially Internet i think its a memory or java script problem but dont know. ie works for a while then dies no freeze or error doesn't help opening a new window i have to restart ie.got new hardware and reinstalled xp but the problem is still there have tried ie7 and firefox but its the same.
Not sure whats up with it. very slow, freezes, stops responding, and when I change from one box to another. like from a title box to a message box I put in a few letters and then cursor stops and disappears. Some times I have to start completely over, some times I just have to left click. I can not watch any videos off the net like utube or any others.
My computer is so slow it keeps freezing. it is always saying it is not responding so I have to push ctrl, alt & delete and then end program. it is driving me to drink it is so slow. What can I do to improve it.
My computer runs Windows XP SP2.. I Know there was a recent update at the beginning of this week my computer automatically downloaded and installed. Since this update my Internet Explorer has been freezing, than a box pops up saying it's not repsonding and it automatically closes out. It does this after using it for less than a minute so it's rather annoyning. I've ran several malware/adware programs as well as my virus program (AVG).. what else can I do to fix this irritating problem?
I am running on windows XP SP2 integrated. I realised that whenever I start my PC,windows does not respond(i.e. when I click on my internet explorer and all other applications / programs, they do not respond).I have to wait for at least 10-15 mins or restart 2 to 3 times, then windows can respond.I really do not know what is going on.I have scanned my PC with noadware but found nothing.Should I reformat my PC or perform a system restore? I am currenting using Intel Pentium III processor with 801 MHz,256MB of RAM.
When I use Juno on my HP it stops responding while loading its homepage. I can end the program now. Click on Internet Explorer and continue in the Internet. But then come the problem. About a half hour after I close the Internet Explorer. My machine freezes. I pull the plug plug it back in and it boots up like nothing happens. I have a dual boot on this machine. Just put in Linspire about two weeks ago because of this problem. Juno works fine under Linspire. So I know it is not Juno nor HP so it has to be with Windows XP.
First of all, a SUMMARY: Computer (Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop; Windows XP Home) operating extremely slowly; SERVICES.exe using >99% of CPU (Processor speed c. 1.2GHz) I recently installed DAEMON Tools, the virtual drive programme, and when I first opened it, my laptop slowed to a crawl and stopped responding, meaning I'd to use the 'off' button to switch it off (Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't work).
Since then, each time I've switched it on, it has been operating as per normal but at a horribly slow speed. I have uninstalled DAEMON, but it seems the problem lies elsewhere; eventually I did get the task manager to come up, and (though it took about 5 minutes) switched to the Processes tab. It turns out that the SERVICES.exe process (run by 'System') is using 99% of my CPU.....
My computer seems to be really slow when i open and close boxes - they overlap or i get the message 'This programme is not responding' what does this mean and what can i do?
My pc is so slow that it takes ages to play a song in wmp11. Ive used tools like ad-aware and registry mechanic, tune up utilities. But still no improvement. It used to be just fine, until I installed some pay-for-viewing add program. I have uninstalled it since then, but the slowness remains. And the processor is hogged, at the highest level, even though i killed many a startup processes.
Recently opening files has become extremely slow. In Windows Explorer after clicking Folders I can click the + sign to open subdirectories and it operates normally. When I get to the lowest level directory (no + sign) and click that directory it takes over 30 seconds to display the contents of that directory. Then when I try to open a small file ( eg Word) it takes over 45 seconds to open the file. Once document is open everything works fine.Browsing on the Internet and running programs, once they are open operate normally. The slow response seems to be confined to Windows Explorer. I
1.constant - explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close- The same thing happens with drwtsn.exe. When this happens my computer freezes and I have to restart to be able to use my computer again.
2.My computer is extremely slow to boot up and feels extremely sluggish while using.
3.My modem speed has dropped to 19.2 kbps from roughly 49kbps for apparently no reason. I have three other machines in my home and they all still show the normal speedsI have tried my machine on the other lines in my home to no avail. Modem issue may not be related to above stated problems (1&2)
I have already done the following trying to solve some issues and provide you with the most information possible.
1.I have downloaded, updated, and ran the most current versions of Adaware, Spybot, and Hijack this (log below).
2.I have defragmented my harddrive, ran scandisk, Pcbug Doctor, and Spyware Blaster. I am using AVG (updated) and have my firewall enabled.
3. I also ran these checks with system restore off (and then reenabled it).
Below you will find a copy of my hijackThis log, startup items, and computer information..I hope this helps.Thank you again.

My computer started running extremely slow. When I check the task manager it notes that the CPU usage is spiked at 100%. I checked to see what is using most of the CPU and its "explorer.exe" using about 99%.
Over the last few months, the Windows Explorer on my laptop has become excruciatingly slow.Simply trying to move to an adjacent directory can take minutes. Related / unrelated - I have seen CPU/memory max out as well - though not always. I have a 1.5 GB of RAM, and have seen this when not heck of a lot is going on. I am unsure if it is a virus issue or is it something that has to do with windows explorer issues, which I have seen a few threads on on the net.
I am using windows xp pro with a 2.00ghz celeron cpu I also have 2gb of ram, lately my pc seems to be slow and explorer keeps crashing causing the desktop to reload if i look in task manager my cpu is almost always at 100% I have done a virus and spywear check but that found nothing
I have tried preventing Automatic Folder and Icon Refresh, and still nothing works. It can take my system up to 2 minutes to open the MyComputer folder, every other folder is fast, weird.
Recently my computer has been opening certain files that are double-clicked very very slowly--2 - 3 minutes, thats right minutes! If I open the file by launching the application then open the file via the Open menu item, all works as expected.I did some investigation and found that this happened to certain file types that were double-clicked from the desktop or from email attachments. This behavior happens from Excel, Word, Project, Access or Internet Explorer shortcuts that are in emails. PowerPoint, Infopath, Publisher and Visio all open normally (2-3 seconds).
Digging further showed that each of the file types that takes minutes to open all have something in the DDE Message field of the Entering Action for Type (File Explorer window, Tools, Folder Options, Select "Doc" file type, Select Advanced, Highlight Open, Select Edit). The file types that open normally don't have anything in this field. This is why I think the behavior is related to DDE.I have tried the "Detect and Repair" option of Office for my troubled apps but this does not have any effect on the problem. I have also tried using msconfig to do a Diagnostic Startup and it have no effect on the problem.
My windows explorer runs really really slow when you simply click on files that are about the size of an mp3 or larger. This is especially noticable with my secondary drive (F: drive) and the mp3 player that I connect via USB that acts as an external drive (G when plugged to the computer. My computer does run a lot in the background, most of it being junk for the stupid satellite internet system (yes, laugh. I hate it), but it still seems odd that, especially with movies, I can't even get them to open at all; it just freezes, but if I do start>run and put in the file name, it goes fine. I've got Windows 2000 with 256 MB RAM.
Hi everybody. Since a couples of days, when I clic on a folder into the left panel of Windows explorer, it takes really long and is Very, very slow to show up the related contained folders and/or its contents in my Windows explorer's right panel. I have a Pentium4 processor and additional 3GB of rams I also tried to adjust my PC for best performances in "advanced" Performances/properties of MY Computer.
I have noticed lately that my computer seems to take an excessively long time to boot up completely - almost 5 minutes. Also when clicking on desktop icons, they seem to also take much longer to load. Windows Explorer (the folder and file management tool, not to be confused with Internet Explorer) is agonizingly slow to rename and open folders and files, sometimes taking close to 2 minutes just to open a 56 KB file. I have done all the usual things like running a virus and spyware scans (I have AdAware, Spybot, Malwarebytes and ATFCleaner, CCleaner as well as my ISP's Computer Associates Antivirus, Firewall and Spyware protection installed), emptying temp files and recycle bin, and defraging the hard drive and I've unchecked "Automatically search for Network folders and printers".
I also did a chkdsk scan and a system restore to before when the problem started. Nothing seems to help the slow response, especially when working with folders and files through Windows Explorer. I have not downloaded or installed any programs recently (only AdAware, Spybot and CA updates), but I did have a new power supply and a new cable modem installed recently. Even the tech that installed the new power supply said he was concerned at how long it took for my computer to boot up, however he only repairs hardware and could offer no suggestions as to what the problem is. If it's any help in diagnosing my problem, my system is an HP Pavilion 750n with a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 768 MB RAM. Used disk space is 16.8 GB, unused space is 57.6 GB....
I downloaded a bunch of stuff on this computer and I don't know what all I need to get rid of. The computer is running really slow and Internet Explorer keeps getting redirected.
