Have been having problem lately w/ alot of my programs freezing up w/ Not Responding noted in task manager and have to close program. Have defragged, ad aware, and spybotted to no avail. I've looked thru threads but can't seem to find cure. Do alot of work w/ PS elements and performance has slowed considerably. Also Roxio DVD creator freezes almost everytime I use it now. Dell w/ P-4,512 RAM,XP home. Ran Pitstop and it highlighted fact that CPU usage was @ 30 while idle. No viruses etc. found when I run Norton, but would note that when I run Liveupdate that it is unable to install "symantec redirector" update. Thoughts or ideas?

My computer runs Windows XP SP2.. I Know there was a recent update at the beginning of this week my computer automatically downloaded and installed. Since this update my Internet Explorer has been freezing, than a box pops up saying it's not repsonding and it automatically closes out. It does this after using it for less than a minute so it's rather annoyning. I've ran several malware/adware programs as well as my virus program (AVG).. what else can I do to fix this irritating problem?

Well ever since I installed Bitdefender 9, it seems that my computer has gone slow. It starts up quick and all but its when i'm browsing, or choosing to bring up another program on the toolbar, or to start a new program. Its like the programs arn't responding and then I eventually have to wait for everything to work again, its a real pain in the butt because I tried deleting Bitdefender and it won't let me because i get a "Write to folder C:WINDOWSInstaller" message and same with ANY other program I try to uninstall in Add/Remove Programs.

Not sure whats up with it. very slow, freezes, stops responding, and when I change from one box to another. like from a title box to a message box I put in a few letters and then cursor stops and disappears. Some times I have to start completely over, some times I just have to left click. I can not watch any videos off the net like utube or any others.

My windows explorer runs really really slow when you simply click on files that are about the size of an mp3 or larger. This is especially noticable with my secondary drive (F: drive) and the mp3 player that I connect via USB that acts as an external drive (G when plugged to the computer. My computer does run a lot in the background, most of it being junk for the stupid satellite internet system (yes, laugh. I hate it), but it still seems odd that, especially with movies, I can't even get them to open at all; it just freezes, but if I do start>run and put in the file name, it goes fine. I've got Windows 2000 with 256 MB RAM.

First of all, a SUMMARY: Computer (Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop; Windows XP Home) operating extremely slowly; SERVICES.exe using >99% of CPU (Processor speed c. 1.2GHz) I recently installed DAEMON Tools, the virtual drive programme, and when I first opened it, my laptop slowed to a crawl and stopped responding, meaning I'd to use the 'off' button to switch it off (Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't work).
Since then, each time I've switched it on, it has been operating as per normal but at a horribly slow speed. I have uninstalled DAEMON, but it seems the problem lies elsewhere; eventually I did get the task manager to come up, and (though it took about 5 minutes) switched to the Processes tab. It turns out that the SERVICES.exe process (run by 'System') is using 99% of my CPU.....

I found recently (since last reinstall) that my mic input was not working. I figured it might be that the mic input was being used for 5.1, but not being able to find this option in windows anywhere remembered that the NVmixer had loads of options to change all this. So i dug out the old driver cd, installed the nForce2 audio drivers and programs and restart.Since then when my pc starts up it either freezes (starting with open apps, then single beep and total freeze), or slows right down to the point where task manager will take 2-4mins to open on three fingering.

About a week back I seem to have gotten a virus that tried to act like a windows firewall popup in an attempt to get me to download bogus software that would do bad things to my computer, well I didn't fall for it, but AVG didn't pikc the virus up right away. But after a day or two it did, and stoped it, but it also found a few other viruses hiding out in windows restore files. I'm actually not sure if this is related to my main problem, but it happened around the same time so I'm reporting it. Ok shortly after I got rid of those viruses my computer started freezing. But I'm not talking about a total lock up. Its kinda like a slow freeze.

A few days ago, someone apparently hacked into my wife's Yahoo email account and sent out a bunch of bogus emails to people in her address book, including myself. The email contained a link. Since she sometimes sends me stuff to check out, I made the supreme mistake of clicking on it. It took me to some pharmaceutical site and I knew it was bogus and clicked out immediately. But the damage seems to have been done.

This is an unique technique for WinXP. We know that it is necessary to wash registry and TEMP files for Win9X/ME/2000 periodly. Prefetch is a new and very useful technique in Windows XP. However, after using XP some time, the prefetch folder can get full of rarely used or obsolete links which can slow down your computer noticeably. My suggestion is: open C(system drive):/windows/prefetch, delete all files (or at least those more than 3 weeks old), reboot. I recommended that you do this every month!

I'm running XP, home edition. I've tried tweaks to improve start up time, used regedit, msconfig, turned off some automatic star-up programs, and used Registry Mechanic. When I tried to restart the computer, I'd be brought to the "Welcome" user selection screen. After selecting a user, the Desktop would load without icons or the taskbar (cursor appears), then after a few seconds, goes back to the Welcome screen. The few seconds I have in Windows, I tried bringing up the Task Manager, but it doesn't work. Also, when I click to load Disk Cleanup, nothing happens. Is there a fix for this?

If you are Netscape user you can enable pipelining to speed page loading.
1. In Netscape go to edit then select preference.
2. Click Advance on the category and then click HTTP Networking.
3. In Direct connection options check enable pipelining. If you feel that it just slow down the page loading you can always uncheck it. Some web servers or proxies don't support this feature. Just try

My computer had been getting slower over the course of a few months, and after telling a friend he told me to change my antivirus software, as the current version had expired. I switched my antivirus software from McAfee to Nod32, however on restarting mt system certain things were not working. I decided to restart my computer, but on choosing to shutdown i was prompted with an error message saying "explorer.exe was not responding".

I am using a DSL connection with a maximum download speed of upto 2MBPS but i usually recieve it for about 1-1.5MBPS. I have tried using Download Accelerator softwares to increase my speed but wuth those some spam also come into my computer so i am not using it anymore. Is there any way by which i can increase my internet speed by doing some changes in Windows internally. Also while using sharing sites my speed tends to fall to about 45KBPS.

Lately my computer has been extremely slow, not just internet slow but onboard slow. For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Occasionally I'll click multiple times on something and nothing will happen then 30 seconds later it will open multiple instances of things. This delay has been happening with just about anything I click on, acting like the computer's busy doing something else when nothing else should be going on. I've looked in the task manager and the applications column will be blank

A few weeks ago it started and got worse now that Windows shows the message "EXPLORER.EXE is not responding" during logoff/shutdown after it has been up for a couple of hours. After 2 or 3 minutes showing this message (I resist to abort the program), heavy hard drive activity and a low CPU load of approx. 5-10%, mainly kernel time, it continues and shuts down fine. Task manager shows that nothing much is happening during this 2-3 minutes except for page faults of explorer.exe thus I
assume it must be some paging performance problem. Generally, after these 2-3 minutes explorer.exe has accumulated another 20000 page faults before the system continues which seems a little bit much for a 25MB process. Sometimes, the heavy swapping for 2-3 minutes also happens while the system is running. The computer got a fresh XP Prof. SP2 setup from CD about two months ago. 512 MB main memory from which there is according to task manager 1/3 still available and the total memory usage is still far from that, too.
