N Force Audio Drivers Causing Slow Down / Freezing
Jan 11, 2008
I found recently (since last reinstall) that my mic input was not working. I figured it might be that the mic input was being used for 5.1, but not being able to find this option in windows anywhere remembered that the NVmixer had loads of options to change all this. So i dug out the old driver cd, installed the nForce2 audio drivers and programs and restart.Since then when my pc starts up it either freezes (starting with open apps, then single beep and total freeze), or slows right down to the point where task manager will take 2-4mins to open on three fingering.

My computer has recently been freezing quite a bit. I have re-installed the op sys win2k prof. and it still does this. I have learned to live with the freezing not a big deal i just re-start often. Anyway today it really started acting up. I get to the login screen type in my password and it loads the desktop but before i can click on anything it gives me an error message saying that explorer has caused an error and will be closed and must be re-started, then it says generating error log. At this point i click ok and there is nothing on the desktop and there is no start bar. The only button combo that works is ctrl alt del. I have tried to boot into safe mode and it does the same thing. Today i had just finished installing new updates from microsoft and it froze right after doing this so i just had to do a hard re-start could this have screwed up the op sys??

i'm running a custom built pc with windows xp home sp2, amd sempron processor 3300+ 2ghz, 10/08/2005-sis-760-6a7i7fkac-00 motherboard (according to aida32), 512mb ram. often, when i play an audio or video file, it plays perfectly well for a while (ranging from a few seconds to several minutes) and then audio is completely lost (also Internet videos only will play for 2 seconds after this happens). at first i thought that maybe it was a software problem, but it still occurs with each multimedia application i have. the sound returns on a reboot, but the problem still occurs all the time. any ideas about how to solve this?
also, on a slightly unrelated note, the pc also sometimes freezes; usually when several applications are running, bit it has been known to happen when barely anything is open. strangely, the cursor will not move, but remains on screen for a few seconds and then disappears completely. is this due to a lack of ram, or is there another way to solve this?i hope i have provided enough information.

A while back I ditched my DSL in favor of a cable modem. I bought a new Linksys wireless gateway to go with the cable modem and since then my laptop (Compaq Presario 2570US, Win XP Pro) has a long delay right after booting into Windows where the computer just seems to freeze up. The mouse will move and you can highlight/click on icons but nothing will open or happen for about one minute until the wireless connection icon appears and picks up the network.
I thought maybe I had something in my startup profile that was causing the delay - I still haven't figured out the delay but I do have two startup items that I'm questioning... one is "carpserv.exe" which I believe accompanies the Conexant modem in the laptop. The other item is "kmw run.exe" - any idea what this is and if i can delete it safely? There are also a couple of 'blank lines' in the Startup tab (within msconfig) that have no title or command listed, only the registry location.

Im reluctant to ask for help finding sound drivers for this M/B, knowing how time-consuming this could be. But I've checked all over - Google, Driverguide...I found two: m6twg which turned out to be win 98x, and wdm4030 which wasn't recognised either.I picked this board up from my trash room, along with a Duron 1100MHz CPU and a 64MB SD RAM, dusted them out and tested. They worked! Added a new WD 40GB HDD and PSU, stuck all in an old case and it surpassed my wildest expectations with Win XP Pro. Now if only I could find sound drivers...For that matter I'm wondering if there are XP drivers?

I'm not having any problems with the audio itself, but I just reinstalled XP and before when I would press the volume up/down buttons at the top of the laptop a green bar/scale thing would come up on screen to show me how high/low my volume was. After reinstalling the audio drivers from IBMs website it does not do this anymore

My windows explorer runs really really slow when you simply click on files that are about the size of an mp3 or larger. This is especially noticable with my secondary drive (F: drive) and the mp3 player that I connect via USB that acts as an external drive (G when plugged to the computer. My computer does run a lot in the background, most of it being junk for the stupid satellite internet system (yes, laugh. I hate it), but it still seems odd that, especially with movies, I can't even get them to open at all; it just freezes, but if I do start>run and put in the file name, it goes fine. I've got Windows 2000 with 256 MB RAM.

About a week back I seem to have gotten a virus that tried to act like a windows firewall popup in an attempt to get me to download bogus software that would do bad things to my computer, well I didn't fall for it, but AVG didn't pikc the virus up right away. But after a day or two it did, and stoped it, but it also found a few other viruses hiding out in windows restore files. I'm actually not sure if this is related to my main problem, but it happened around the same time so I'm reporting it. Ok shortly after I got rid of those viruses my computer started freezing. But I'm not talking about a total lock up. Its kinda like a slow freeze.

A few days ago, someone apparently hacked into my wife's Yahoo email account and sent out a bunch of bogus emails to people in her address book, including myself. The email contained a link. Since she sometimes sends me stuff to check out, I made the supreme mistake of clicking on it. It took me to some pharmaceutical site and I knew it was bogus and clicked out immediately. But the damage seems to have been done.

I had a playlist running on WMP and all of a sudden one of the songs started being really choppy and kept stopping, etc. When I reboot my computer, it takes AT LEAST 10 minutes until I get to the desktop and can fully work on it. It spends minutes on the opening screen with the Windows XP thing running left to right
I'm working on it now and it's going fine. Whenever I open a program though it takes a long time but ends up working ok. I can't do anything when I open a song or video.

My husband has a Toshiba Satellite L25-S1215 which is running Windows XP Service Pack 3. It was working fine, and then suddenly got extremely slow, and the audio on start-up is broken up/stuttering. When playing videos the audio and video is also stuttering. Thought Norton Internet Security might be the problem, and uninstalled it, but problems continue. When computer is turned on, it is VERY slow to bring up Windows, and then extremely slow to connect to IE. Can't even bring up Mozilla Firefox anymore, which he had used for several years with no trouble. While NIS was installed, it showed CPU usage as fluctuating between 10% and 100% with only NIS running. I have done a "hijack this" scan,

Microsoft Automatic Updates keeps notifying me that they want to update my system to Windows 8 (I have Windows 6). I do not want to upgrade to 8 and and hit cancel which is my only offered option other than install. How do I stop this notification permanently? The icon shows up in my task bar and I also can't remove it from there! I use Automatic Update for security and other vital updates--Windows 8 is not vital to me. Is Microsoft forcing me to upgrade because 6 support will stop in the near future. Sites like Facebook are already notifying me that my browser is not compatible with their web site and I should change.I want to stay with what I have because I am comfortable with IE6 and Outlook Express 6. I am not interested in going to Firefox or Google options.

I am using a Windows XP Pro SP2. I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Clamwin and Symantec 10.1.6.6000 to verify if its virus related. Checked Startup and disabled it using Safemode to isolate source. Check if there was a BAT file created a few days earlier. But came up with nothing.Every time I used Start/Run/CMD or click CMD shortcut from Quick Launch, a second window that warns me my windows XP will force shutdown everything in less than 30 secs. Don't have even have enough time to disable it using cmd window or take a screen shot.

I have 2 USB hard drives which i use for storage. I have a backup program which automatically backs up my mp3s and digital camera pictures. When i plug in the USB hard drives they show up as C (80Gb HD) and D problem is that if my digital camera is plugged into my USB port before any of the USB hard drives are plugged in, the digital camera then takes up Drive Letter 'C'. Then if i plug my USB Hard Drives in they now become D and E. See my problem ?? The backup program no longer recognises that the USB hard drives have moved up a letter and so won't back up until i restart with only the USB hard drives in tomake them C and D again. So my question is, how do i force WinXP to make sure that my 80Gb HD is the only thing to ever be allocated 'C', and my 160Gb HD is the only thing to ever be allocated the letter 'D' ?. i.e. I want to make WinXP automatically recognize which HD i am plugging in and always allocate it the Drive Letteri want?

I managed to completely mess myself up with one mouse click. D'oh. Essentially, some joker put a theme which set EVERYTHING to black windows, text fields, text, background, everything in my theme file and I accidentally hamfistedly clicked it. This means I can't see a danged thing. I can't see the window if I right click, I can't see what I'm doing to change the theme back to something viewable. So essentially my question is this. is there a way to *force* the theme/colour of your desktop and windows to revert to Windows default BEFORE you finish the boot process i.e. bios, etc. or from the cmd line alone? (No regedit - I can type in command line but not in regedit.)I'd rather not have to do a system restore, I'd lose a bunch of stuff I really don't want to lose!
