I have tried to play DVDs on my HP Pavillion notebook. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have tried using the Media Center (Play my DVD), Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc. In all cases, I get the video, but no audio. When I put in an audio CD, it plays fine.

I have win xp sp2 fully update with all drivers etc upto date. WMP11 was working fine and I can't figure what has caused the issue.
All video files play, but only the audio, the screen remains blank. This applies to local files or steaming from places such as mlb.tv etc.
I have tried removing WMP11, and 10 but nothing allows media files to play. No other software would work either. I finally got VLC to work by selecting OpenGL mode, but that would work in no other mode either.
I have checked I have all codecs, tried removing all and re adding, but nothing seems to work.

I was moving about 450gb of music from my old external (which was almost completely out of space, 465gb) to an internal 1tb drive. I was installing/setting up a program, thinking 'no way this will affect the file transfer', when suddenly that program gave an error (can give specifics on this if needed). Immediately after, my files stopped moving. It said 'delayed write failed, data has been lost' or something like that. I looked on my external, and it was empty. At this point i was rather upset because i thought i had lost years worth of music. Since I thought i had lost all my data, i tried one of those recovery programs("diskdigger") And it couldn't even access the drive. Gave an error, then showed it as 0gb. But the drive properties still showed 300+ gb even though the only folder in it was shown as empty.
So, i did the classic windows fix-all, restarted. My computer would not even go past the motherboard boot screen for 5 minutes. At this point i was about to jump out the window, but i restarted again and it worked. I went to my external, all my folders were there, i could open all the subfolders, play the music with vlc, etc. BUT now when i try to move the folder with all my music, it says "Cannot move file: Cannot read from source file or disk".

I've just bought an MP3 player and I've installed the software that is packaged with it. The program searched my HDD for all types of audio files and added them to my Library. What happened next was a complete blunder on my part: what I did was go through each file in my Library and delete those that I didn't want and keep those I did. I didn't pay any attention to what I was deleting, and I believe what I did has to do with a disk problem I'm havin'. I don't think my computer recognizes my D drive anymore (excuse me, please, I don't know much-- I mean the drive that plays DVDs/CDs). When I view My Computer, the D drive isn't displayed. Another example: when I'm in WMP and tryin' to copy tracks from a CD onto my HDD, there isn't a D drive listed to upload from.

At boot up everything seems ok, the nice WinXP jingle plays and all is right with the world. At this point I can play MP3s, video files, and games and the sound works ok. Now occasionally (more often than not) the screen does a very strange refresh about 2 to 3 minutes of the computer being booted. Any open widows and the task bar reverts to Windows 98 look (grey with the old fasioned functionality boxes at the top right of an open window) then as quicky as it changes it all changes back again (say less than half a second) to WinXP look.
After this point only system sounds will play. Now if a programme already has access to the sound device then it works until it is shut down. Anything that tries to access the sound device after this fails to (itunes says there is an audio config error, WMP says that another programme has access to the sound device). I guess whatever that refresh thingy is it is stopping any other programme accessing the driver or preventing the driver to be released to other programmes.

When I insert an audio CD into my CD ROM drive it plays automatically and then I do not know which media player plays the CD. I have WMP,iTunes,GoldWave,Realplayer and quick Time in my Entertainment folder.Task manager does not indicate as to which application or process is being used for audio.I would like to know which program/application is in use at the time the CD is playing. Besides I do not want to disable the autoplay of the CD.

I have a problem with video codecs all of a sudden, both my media players (Windows media player and BS Player) have stopped playing the audio tracks of my video files earlier on today, everything was working fine, and my video files were playing perfectly. I have the Xvid and Divx codecs installed. When I try and play a video file (that I watched earlier on today), Windows Media Player says that it is connecting to the codec server, then says there is an error downloading codec but it shouldn't even need to do this, as I KNOW I have the correct codecs installed. The visuals play fine but no audio.

when looking at a webpage with an embedded avi, the avi d/l's, then only sound plays. When I attempt to view the file in the temp internet files folder, it only plays sound, and properties (in media player) says audio file. When I copy the same file to another folder (somewhere outside temp int folder) and play the file, it plays the audio and video like it should (and properties in media player says audio video). What gives? I've checked in the browser settings and its set to play videos on webpages, and I've tried checking play by extension (as opposed to content) as well. The media player is only 9 (yes, I'll upgrade), but I know that's not the problem because I've looked at the same site with a different computer (but not xp) and it works fine.

I have a PC running XP home, which completely locks up when viewing 'any' type of video online. Mostly with flash player. It plays for a few seconds then freezes. Seems to work fine as long as on text pages. Windows media player also seems to work fine. Tried loads of things - Swapped memory, graphics card, removed flash player and reinstalled. Nothing seems to stop it freezing. This happens with either IE7 or with Firefox. Have removed the ethernet adapter and replaced the drivers. When it freezes there is nothing showing in the event logs as a pointer?

I just got a new computer with an AMD Duron processor, 512 M RAM and Windows XP. Only problem is I've got no audio. I've checked BIOS and sound is enabled but Windows doesn't seem to recognize that the speakers are hooked up. When I tried to play system sounds from the Control Panel, I got an error message that said cannot play sound, your sound card may be in use. The computer was a gift that was bought used and the shop didn't have any documentation with the system. I think this might be a driver issue but I'm not sure how to find out which driver to try.

I reinstalled my OS and all my software, shortly thereafter I noticed I had an issue where any sound that was coming through my headphones was being retransmitted through the mic, with further testing I found that this was not actually the case but rather any sound that would be output is being retransmitted as audio in, even if I had no speakers, headphones or mics connected. I have looked at and experimented with everything I could in every sound settings.
I have tried updated drivers, the only way for me to stop the issue from occurring is to mute the mic in the recording control, but that stops me from using the mic altogether. I need to be able to use my mic without recording anything that I am hearing as well.

First off I use windows XP with the latest service pack. I'm using the onboard sound card on my motherboard Asus striker II extreme.
The volume of my flash player (I first noticed it when trying to view a video on Hulu) but other flash embedded videos won't play sound either. I thought this was a flash problem, and tried the usual fixes uninstalling reinstalling, running the update utility and removing and reinstalling the plugin. Also it likely isn't a browser issue as embedded videos didn't play on either Firefox or Opera.
After restarting my computer after a few uninstalls I noticed my startup music wasn't playing as well. I'm thinking that it might be some registry error as it seems like the music is very quiet instead of muted, and all of the volume levels in the Sounds and Audio Device Properties menu are at the correct levels, and my other media players play music and movies just fine.
I've browsed the forums and haven't seen anyone with a similar problem or a fix, so any help would be greatly apprciated.

I do not know how to determine the CPU load of audio on a motherboard how to determine if the sound includes a digital signal processor (DSP). I assume a DSP, especially for older CPUs (600 MHz. or so) is a big improvement because it offloads a lot of processing from the CPU. I am interested only in stereo. How can I know if an add-in sound card with a DSP is actually an improvement? Does the DSP overweigh other issues, eg. does a cheap Mad Dog Prowler 4.1 DSP sound card offer an improvement over the motherboard sound of a Compaq DeskPro ENS/P600? Truth is, I've been looking for but have not seen a treatise on this topic. Does anyone have any links for me to pursue?

My brothers computer recently developed a problem, its an old Dell optiplex GX1 500L+ and hes on XP pro
he came home and the monitor was flashing the little lights on the front that indicate it being over range
we tried an older monitor, as well as my own LCD that Im typeing on now, both had the same results, as well as in VGA mode the monitor acts normal up untill the loading windows screen, where it promptly goes blank and begins with the flashing lights but booting into safe Does work and gives us a picture, so I dont think it could be problem a problem with onboard graphics, so Im guessing its a malicious program that is inflicting this problem, unless someone can tell me otherwize does anybody know what would likely be the cause of this, or the best way to trouble shoot it, we already did a Repair installation, that didnt fix anything and I figured Id ask here on the tech forum before proceding to wipe his hard drive, my question on the forum is also a lilttle bit curiosity driven,

A new machine with a new XP build who is unable to hear audio from his machine. After taking a look at his machine I noticed he had no audio driver installed. Thinking that this was a simple fix I attempted to re-install the Realtek HD Audio drivers that are included with the machine (HP dc-5750). After installation and restart I receive the new hardware detected prompt and I navigate to the directory with the .sys file in it. When attempting to install it the wizard states that it was unable to locate the drivers. I know the drivers are correct and I have even attempted to download updated drivers.
This is when I started to search the forums, all stating to remove the drivers and remove the UAA hotfix from Microsoft and re-install both. (UAA first then drivers) This failed to produce any results, so I looked around more and found an article stating I needed to extract the files into a folder and direct the new hardware wizard to the commonfile folder in the folder. This left me still without sound or a working driver.

I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate (64Bit) installed on the primary hard drive but my question is will Windows XP work ok along with Windows 7 being installed as well like XP being on the same hard drive? Also could someone tell me what the limitations are for XP as I have 4GB RAM (Dual Channel) as I'll be installing the 32Bit of XP.
Also would XP crash at all with the high specs I'm running ? as I've overclocked my processor to 3.52GHz or doesn't the processor play a role in the stability of XP ?

This machine is about 5 months old and has been crashing occasionally the last two weeks after the machine is up and running awhile. I checked the system log and there is nothing leading up to the crash but I do get a crash dump for each one. There is nothing I can pin down as coinciding with the crashes. The vents and fan on side were blocked by a bookcase so I pulled it out in the open. Checked the CPU temp last at 37 deg c. Ran "Memory Diagnostic 1" (from download.com) 4 passes of all the tests were clean - this took about 15 minutes. Ran chkdsk on the Seagate - no bad sectors. I can't tell with chkdsk whether it notifies you when it finds problems. All appeared good there. Did the "auto fix file system errors" but not the search for bad sectors on the external WD Passport. I think I need to analyze the crash dumps but don't know where to start. I hear there's a MS debugger or some such? Haven't looked on MS site yet. Is that where it is?I'm thinking maybe, cpu, memory, psu as possible culprits. Can I rule out the video card? and the hard drives?

My friend was installing Norton and it froze half way thru and she ended up having to restart. When she restarted her computer (with WIN XP HOME EDITION) it loaded fine but now with a new problem. No program will load. I cant load Word, AIM, anything. I tried to do a system restore, but i cant open the program to do that. I cant explore the hard drive because that program wont open. I cant access the control panel either. The only thing that seems to work is IE, which is useless. I got the XP cd and performed a repair, but the problem did not change. I assumed there was something wrong with the registry, but i cant run regedit. Everytime I try to open a program I get a message that says "this file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this action" For some reason, no program will load, yet the computer starts up fine.
