I have 2 hard drives. My operating system is installed on my primary drive and my programs are on the secondary drive. To get the best performance which drive would be better to install the Internet Service Provider?

A friend gave me a laptop, my problem is that it came from Japan thus everything is japanase thus I can't hardly use it. The reason I accept it is bcoz he said I can try to reinstall a win xp with english version (btw, the OS is win xp pro in japanase version). Thus I bought win xp pro sp2 and try to reinstall it, so I reboot fm cd rom and while the windows setup is starting, the system stopped and the message on my screen read as:A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:Check for viruses on your computer, resume any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers, check your hard drive to make sure it is porperly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check hard drive corruption. then restart computer. how in the world I can follow the above steps if everything written on it are in japanase language? I also try to visit the manufacture's website, thinking that perhaps it help solve the problem but....i also need a japanase translator to understand it.

Fresh format and install onto a 320gb SATA drive. Windows XP SP2.BIOS recognizes the drive.Unless the CD-ROM is ahead of the Hard Drive in the BIOS boot settings, and the Windows XP SP2 install disc is in the drive, the system will not boot. The message displayed is along the lines of "Disk boot error. Please insert a system disk and press enter."If the CD-ROM is moved back or removed from the boot order, this result also occurs.
If the install disc is in the drive, and the BIOS is instructed to look for a CD-ROM boot before a Hard Drive boot, a prompt is displayed along the lines of "Press any key to boot from CD." If no key is pressed, windows XP boots normally. Formating, reinstalling XP, messing with BIOS boot order, confirmed HD reads correctly in BIOS, with and without CDs in drive, repairing master boot record, adding a boot delay in BIOS.

I have a Dell Dimension 2350 that I want to add a 2nd hard drive to. However when I opened it up there is no additional brackets. Can I go ahead and still put one in and have it just lay in the bottom of the case?

Let me be clear on this: I want to put in a larger drive than the old one, have Windows completely move itself to the new drive, and leave the old one blank - all without Windows' security hackles raising and saying, hey you changed something so you need to re-activate(I don't want to clone. I've done this and Windows has been a POS about it. I want to MOVE the installation.)Perhaps someone has some secret information that this is in fact possible?

I have this Dell L733r that I installed WinXP on. It also has an internal 250mb zip drive as a slave drive which is on the same cable as the DVD rom installed on [1]. When I installed WinXP, the main hard drive (master) [0] ended up with a drive letter of [e]. The DVD rom was D and the zip drive was [c]. Is there anyway to avoid this short of disconnecting the zip drive? But it would seem that you wouldn't have to discconnect the zip drive.

Can I install/repair XP Pro SP2 from an external USB 2.0 DVD-burner drive? I tried it in the past but the installation did not proceed beyond the installing hardware devices phase but then I'm not sure whether that was due to a USB hub or this device?

I have an nLited XP 64bit CD. I don't have any other CDs to copy over to, but I have a 4GB USB flash drive. I am having a hard time finding stores that either sell floppy drives or external floppy drives. But I need one in order to install my RAID drivers so that my SATA drive can be detected for installing XP on. I have the following setup (Stuff you need to know):Asus Vintage AH-1 barebones motherboard (AMD Socket 939)SATA 80GB harddrive (on RAID using the ULi utility)IDE 80GB harddrive, set to cable select, because this is technically my backup slave driver (too slow to run software from) (Yes, this system is outdated, but I need to make due with what I have until I can build myself the system I want) I need to be able to install my RAID drivers so that I can have my SATA drive detected. I have ideas, but I'm not one to be able to do things about them.

Independent Dual Boot capabilities on two separate & independent drives, one on the MOBO EIDE controller the other on the VIA SATA RAID Controller on the same MOBO. I am attempting a clean installation of Windows XP on the SATA Drive but the system fails to recognize even the presence of the drive. This, even after stripping the system of all drives except this one, and after 'prepping' it to be bootable with MAXTOR prep. tools. Was there ever a restriction on putting an O/S on SATA drives even on the MOBO? I have all the updates installed, "I think".

In my Network Connections it shows nothing. It is just white space. In my system tray, at the bottom right-hand corner of my screen, it shows no flashing computers. This has been so for around five months, I'm guessing. It never really bothered me until lately, and here is what I have done in order to fix it (to no avail, obviously):- Installed all critical Windows updates
- Ran Ad-Aware entire system scan (it's my only anti-virus program)- Tried to make a new network connection, but according to Windows, I have no network hardware, either- Put my Windows installation CD into my CD drive, went to "Install Optional Windows Components," and installed everything network related, then restarted.

I'm can't get WinXP installation to find my Sata Hard-drive. I'm running Suse Linux on my IDE-HD and I could also had no problems getting my Suse 10.1 installation to install on the SATA-HD. I've booted up with winxp media install disk and tried to use the F6 key at the right time but nothing happens so it keeps going until I get to the point where I can press the S key to install SATA RAID driver from disk that came with my motherboard. The drivers install but then windows install still says no disk to install windows... I don't get it.
I've checked my bios and SATA in there, in fact the first thing I see when I boot up in the boot sequence is the SATA drive. Linux knows it's there but windows install doesn't. I installed XP on a WD SATA drive before and all I had to do was press F6 to install the controller from the XP disk but that doesn't work now.

While installing Windows XP, the power went out after about 40% of it had been installed. Now, when I turn on the computer, I get a message that says, "NTLDR is missing. press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot." Well, this becomes a never-ending cycle. So, I inserted the Windows XP cd in the cd-rom drive and booted the computer up. I tried re-installing XP and repairing XP. Neither works. So, what I would like to do is completely wipe out my hard drive (nothing I want to save) and start all over.

I have an external hard drive (150GB) which is partitioned into two parts. One partition , about 145gb, is data and files of my own. Then there is an extended partition at 5gb in size, which contains windows xp installation files. What I did was take my windows xp cd, make an ISO, and then extracted the iso and put the files into the extended partition of my external usb hard drive. The computer I want to install to has a cd drive that is not working and thus i cannot install windows xp from a cd. The BIOS of the computer DOES support booting from a USB device.I have partition magic software and have used it to create the 5gb extended partition on the usb external drive. However, I don't know how to configure anything so that it will acutally know to boot from this partition and what files to use to start the installation.

I pulled his hard drive out and put it in my comp (secondary) I then installed xp on it. This went fine, I was even able to boot all the way to xp. The problem comes in when I tried to move the hard drive back to his comp. I could not boot past the compaq screen. I got the error message
"couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"
"ntldr: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

I am trying to install SP3 on a Windows XP Home (currently SP2). The installation is hung on "Finishing Installation - Performing cleanup". I downloaded the installer from the MS Download center (it didn't appear in Windows Update). Is it safe to turn off the computer (since I can't close the installer), or should I let it sit for a while longer (it's been hanging for a few hours)?

I had to buy a new Hard drive and installed it into my computer.also have a slave drive that is much smaller. the slave drive has always been drive e: or drive d:. But for some reason after I re-installed windows and ran it, it now made my slave drive into drive c: and my master drive into drive e:! How do I switch the two? The slave master is set up properly in the BIOS. The large drive is the master and the small drive is the slave. But how do I assign the c:designation to the large drive and the e: designation to the small slave drive.

I tried to install XP Pro SP2 on my laptop and somehow my product key was no good. I first reformated my hard drive and Windows installation begun but I had to get out since the product key was invalid.I finally noticed I had the wrong disk. When I finally found the right disk with the right key, the old installation kept on coming back where I left it. How can I start all over again, with the reformating and reinstallation from scratch? I really don't know how to do this. Is there a special command at reboot? Do I have to put the CD in or not? I'm not sure anymore since it's been years since I've tried this.

Firstly, I currently have Vista installed, and wanted to install XP again. How can I approach this while achieving dual boot features? Second, if the only way to get dual boot is to reinstall XP and then Vista, how do I do it because my computer only came with Vista restore disks.Third, if I do reinstall Xp then Vista, what is the easiest way I can literally take my computer the way it is, all programs, documents, settings, etc... and then bring it back after I do a clean install. I currently do have a 60gb external hard drive as well.
