Can anyone point me to a good website or well-written book that will teach me about Installing Windows and configuring Windows Workgroups, Adding a computer to the system, Networking in this context in general.
I have a gateway desktop running win 2000 pro spk 4 and a Dell laptop running win xp pro spk2, i have a wireless router that allow my desktop thru a wired to conect to the internet and the laptop also connect wireless, but i want to be able to access the files and folders from each other, what do i need to do in order to browse each other i tried to share both hds and also created in both of them same workgroup name but when i browse from one each i don't see the other one and viceversa.

Both systems run XP plus both systems can ping by IP addr and hostname. However, when I attempt to map a network drive via the laptop, I receive a login screen, but the laptop's domain name's prepended to the login id. How do I set up a workgroup on the laptop without loosing the domain info ?
I am building a multiuser system using Roaming Profiles. I would like to customize the "Start > All Programs" menu to the user's user group. For example I would like to have Program Group that contains basic programs that every user would use. Then have Programmers group that contains Basic applications + programming applications. Ideally the Program Groups should be assigned based on the user's group.A user can belong to multiple groups.

Like Groups -- how when you open My Computer it's got "Files Stored on This Computer," "Hard Disk Drives," and "Devices with Removable Storage." I've found out how to create groups and organize them based on name, file type, date last accessed, and so on.
But what I really want to do is create custom groups, with their own names, and drag-and-drop files and folders into them. Like when I open My Documents, and all of my document folders are mixed in with My Music and such. I want to create a custom group and put My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos in it, and then have all my other folders in a second group. How do I do that?
I still do not have a fix for what it wrong. and by the way adding the space / f for the scan does not work.My chkdsk states: free space allocated in the master file table BTM.Problems with the file system.IT states different things in the read only mode, and I repeat I CANNOT do a chkdsk /f at all. It will not boot into the check disk mode to fix the file system. Please what can I do. It will defrag but not fix the file system. In fact, the computer will not reboot into the check disk mode when restarted.

mobile machine. Both m/c's are running versions of XP and logins have been
set to allow the remote user to conncet as a properly authenticated member of
group on the offoce m/c.
Problem is I can't set the IP address for the remote machine to connect to.
The office conection is via a dsl setup and I have been given an IP address
for the internet connection by the ISP. After the ISP IP Address I expect to
see a modem (which is also my internal LAN DHCP server) and the IP Address of
the machine I wish to connect to.
If my ISP has given me an IP address 200.200.1.100, my dsl modem is
192.168.1.255 and the machine I wish to connect to is 192.168.1.100 with
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 how does this translate to a VPN configuration?
I need assistance with seting up my Network Connection.I had my system set up so I can login to my computer for use at home with no network and a login for when I am connected to a network with a domain. Every thing worked fine until I had to reformat my drive and reinstall XP Pro.Now I believe I have set up my system incorrectly. currently my home login is set for a home workgroup which I do not want. And I can not set up the login for the domain.Please point me to a document or give me some step by step instructions.

I'm instructed to configure the permissions the folder in which the northwind.mdb file is supposed to reside. The tutorial instructs me to browse to that folder, and right-click it and select "properties" and select the "security" tab-- but i don't have a Security tab. My user account is an administrator account, but just to test it, i logged is a "Administrator", but there was no change. Why do my folder properties not show a Security tab, and how do i change it so they do?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a USB to SPDIF converter that is supposed to support 5.1 surround. I can hear stereo sound, but not 5.1 surround. I know there are many free tools that enable passthrough on spdif so the receiver does the dedcoding instead of the PC. However windows XP doesn't see the USB audio device as SPDIF is there a way to configure the USB audio device as SPDIF without drivers?

When I access from another Windows client and I get into my own file and then go out to try and get into another persons folder, I am auto directed to mine. I have to logg off each time to check each persons user folders and log in as them.
Any reason for the very slow access to Windows XP Newsgroups ???

Computer is all of a sudden very slow. When I did a computer check for information regarding software, I found that many strange software files run automatically at startup. When I checked "msconfig", I only found 24 programs starting at startup which were normal. How do I eliminate these strange files. I don't know which one of these are necessary and I don't know how to eliminate them. They appear as "unknown". One example of a startup file is "zipfldr". There are pages of other ones.

In MY COMPUTER, the icons used to be organized under certain subheadings like "Files Stored on this Computer," "Hard Disk Drives," and "Devices with Removeable Storage" etc.These headings are gone. When I go to Arrange Icons and click the Show Groups option, I do not see a return of my lost headings. Instead, my control panel, and each of my drives is shown in a separate category that has a random letter assigned as its topic heading. How do I change this? He insists on having admin rights but with admin rights he can reset my password without knowing it even though we are apart of the same group so when I go away he removes my password and goes through my files and stuff. going through control_panel>user_accounts> and switching the account to a limited doesn't work (some progs can still be installed).Going into computer Management gives me the ability to look at the groups and move user names from one group to another, but I can't edit/modify what each group is allowed to do. Right clicking on group and selecting properties gives me this.Going into Group_Policy allows me to edit what users can do, but it applies the changes to every user (including the admin).
How does one read the whole names of the news groups when wanting to subscribe? How does one set it up so that after reading a post and closing, the post does not show up on the next visit to the group? How does one go back to look at old posts?

If it continues to run your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?" I pick "Yes", my system does indeed become "unresponsive" for about 5-10 seconds, then goes back to normal. Then about a minute later the same thing happens again. This only happens in Yahoo groups!
Trying to get printers networked for our computers. We have about 8 computers and 4 printers. I have a "cheat book" called XP for Dummies that I got the computers networked but tried to get the printers to work on 2 computers and kept getting this message that I had either put in the wrong printer name or the printer wasn't hooked up to the network.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to network two laptops together via Ethernet cable rather than through the wireless router, as I am trying to transfer large files quickly.I am using a Dell Inspirion 8100 and a Sony Vaio PCG-Z1A.I was able to connect the Vaio PCG-Z1A to a MacBook Pro via Ethernet cable just a couple of days ago, so I don't think that the problem is with the Vaio.When I plug the Dell into the router with the Ethernet cable, it automatically detects the connection and DHCP assigns an address. Thus, I can only assume that the Ethernet adapter is working fine. But when I plug the Dell directly into my Vaio with the Ethernet cable, the tray icon on the Dell says "Local Area Connection - A network cable is unplugged."

The Internet connection originates thru a DSL connection from "Westell" Modem to "D-Link" Ethernet Switch and is functioning on BOTH computers. The file sharing is ANOTHER story--The Vista OS "sees" & shares ALL the files/drives shared FROM XP--HOWEVER, the XP computer ONLY "sees" & shares "Public" & "User" Folders--when I try to access the C-Drive Folder (which I have set up to share like the others, I get the following message: "C is not accessible. You might not have permission to us e this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions."
I have turned off my Windows Firewall on Vista & have tried repeatedly to allow access to "everyone" regarding the C Drive on the Vista computer--and after a restart the same issue exists.
I plan to use my notebook (roaming from room-to-room) on a WinXP Home Network with a desktop (the ICS host) in my bedroom.. I also will be using it with public hot spots when I travel. Given my planned usage do you recommend a Wi-Fi router Presumably my first step is to use the Network Setup Wizard to configure my desktop as the ICS host. Is this correct Also, if I use the Windows XP ICS software on my ICS host to share its DSL connection with my notebook, do I need the DSL software from my ISP installed on my notebook as well
