my computer has been freezing at random times. when it freezes, i push the reset button to reboot it.after that,i get a black screen before windows starts. i forgot what the msg was, but it was something like "boot disk," might have been "insert boot disk"? i'm not too sure i am running windows xp.

Ive have taken it too computer shops and had it looked at, they have done various things like change motherboard etc and none of that has helped. The last piece of advice I had was that it was probably software related and the best way to fix it would be to simply wipe the system and start from scratch but if possible id like to avoid that.Sometimes the PC will stay on for 4/5/6hours at a time and run fine, other times after just 5 minutes it will shut itself off. Then when I try to turn it back on it won't switch on unless it is left for a while.
View 12 Replies View RelatedLately it has been going super slow I have been trying to play my sims 2 game which was working fine until I installed the Sims 2 Pets. which seems to have trouble running on the computer. However the computer had been running slow previous to all of this. It had also been restarting itself at random times which we thought was because of the video card as the fan is humming and vibrating making all kinds of weird noises. I have now deleted all unecessary programs and uninstalled all of the sims programs. I have also ran two different anti virus programs whilst in safe mode which did not pick anything up each time. As of now it is running pretty efficiently but I can not do anything with it when i open IE6 it will load Google but no other pages.it just doesn't work it stays open sometimes when IE6 freezes the whole computer freezes and I have to restart by using the power button.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI will try to be as specific about my problem in general.I am using a Compaq laptop, using Windows XP. I don't know much more than that, but I can search for additional information regarding specs and stuff.It all started one day when I was browsing the internet using the latest version of Firefox. I turned up my volume and the blue screen of death appeared (advising me to seek tech support of sorts).I restarted, and yet again touching the volume yielded the blue screen of death. I tried several, possibly 6 times, and the only thing causing the blue screen of death is altering the volume in any way, including touching the volume buttons, adjusting volume in the volume control and adjusting the wave settings in volume control.
So I ran Spyware Doctor. I do pay the full 40 bucks a year for this wonderful program, and it detected a bunch of freaky looking things. Like adaware, something called virtumonde, and all these high threat viruses and adware, but it wiped them clean. I ran it again, it found 3 more standard viruses that it didn't name, cleaned them, ran SWD again and nothing appeared, so I assume now my computer is free from whatever was messing with me.The volume problem still persists though, and also at random times the blue screen of death will appear (I'm praying now it won't as I type all this or I'll cry).Then another problem occurred. When I try to open a file of sorts, that pesky message appears- windows explorer has an error of some sort, do you want to close it or ignore it?or something to that extent, so I can't view any sort of files now. I am running the computer in safe mode (which still exhibits the risk of a blue screen attack, but I can view the folders properly). Somethings up, what can I do to fix this? Any suggestions? I will try to answer any thing I might have left out.
I have just had a mate of mine build a pc for me, from scratch, with all new parts. However, for some reason I get a random freezing of the screen resulting in a hard shut down from the Power button. This has happened a few times now, more than twice while in IE6 and once on the desktop. I originally thought it might be IE6 so I have installed IE7 and firefox just to be sure, then it froze while on the desktop straight after i logged in. The PC isn't running hot at all, as I said it froze after I logged in and there is definately no spyware or anything as its a new PC and the only thing i've installed on it is AVG & IE7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAll seemed well until trying to render video projects using Pinnacle Studio 11.1, when I would get random freezes or black screens with the pc being unresponsive, requiring power down (5 seconds holding the button) or reset.After some time on Studio related forums I bought more RAM recommended from Crucial. No difference. I bought a new video card. No difference.I defragged, updated drivers, updated bios. no difference.I then started experimenting with Prime95 torture test, Memtest86+, PassMark's Burn-In Test and Windows Memory Diagnostic with the following results:Memtest86+ completed one pass ok. Have not yet left it running for longer.Prime95 runs overnight with no errors when testing large FFT's so far. It produces the black screen crash overnight on small FFT testing but was running ok for over 2 hours to start with.

Eventually after several restarts windows loaded but this continues to happen randomly. View 14 Replies View RelatedThis just started randomly, I can't think of anything to cause it to happen. At random times my computer will just go to a black screen and not respond, at which point I must push restart button and reboot computer. It can happen within 3 minutes or 3 hours. I have tried virus scans, chekced ram connection. All is fine. I ran the windows memory test and everything passed. Anyone know what can cause this? It is very annoying as I can basically not use my computer. Oh yea one more thing, I tried reformatting and installed windows on the other hard drive. It worked fine for a few weeks but then started again. Also could a corrupt windows installation cause this? I mean could a few system files that are corrupt cause a complete crash like this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWell for the past 3 or 4 months i have been experiencing random slow boot times for my machine. Sometimes I will turn my computer on and be at my desktop fully loaded within 30 seconds. Other times it can take more then a half hour. This only has to do with the windows xp loading screen itself. (i've spent many an hour watching that stupid blue bar moving across the screen, and sometimes it just stops completely for long periods of time) My bios posts quickly and once i get out of the loading screen I'm usually done with in 5-10 seconds.
I've tried reformatting several times, rewriting the boot sector, and mbr. I 've tried disabling all unused network controllers. I've tried disabling precashing of programs in registry. I have also used the program bootvis, which is supposed to help speed up boot times, and it usually helps a lot for about a day, and then it would be back to normal. Defraging the hard drive has no affect either, and i have checked the drive for errors and have come up with nothing.
Whenever I'm on this personal computer you can hear the hard drive rev up at random times and I am not sure if this is normal. I have run adaware se, spybot, yahoo anti-spy, avast anti-virus and everything is clean. I just want to know if this action is normal and/or is there a way I can make it stop? This personal computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-W30 running Windows XP SP 2. I also have a ton of extra space on both internal hard disk's, not sure if that's relevant or not.

Sometimes it goes all day without freezing, other times it's only 30 minutes. It just happens randomly for no reason.A quick restart fixes it, only until it freezes again, though sometimes it needs to be restarted twice since it sometimes freezes during the first screen of the POST.What normally would cause this to happen and how would I go about fixing it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having problems as of late with my computer. for the past 10-15 days when I startup my computer sometimes Windows will load and other times it won't. I don't even get the privledge of the blue screen of death, but rather then brown green screen saying Windows failed to start. Usually it takes 3-4 tries before Windows successfully loads, but it seems to be getting progressively worse. I haven't installed any new software or modifiied any configuration details within the last 30days. I even tried a system restore point of about a month ago and I continue to have this problem.
I threw in my XP cd for a re-install but it says my version of windows is newer then the one on the cd, and after thinking about it, if this is a serious problem, having to re-install windows, all of my drivers for my 3rd party hardware and then update everything might not be worth the effort if I can just get a new computer. I have been pondering for a while of purchasing a mac for my next round of computer purchases so if it comes down to that, hardware and software costs from my current system are not a major issue. So is my computer just slowly dying like a used car, or what might be the problem?
For some reason, when I start up IE and start browsing, it's fine, but at some random time it all of a sudden closes everything that is related to IE, including anything I was downloading. Can anybody tell me what's going on and how to fix it?

I only have like 4 programs in the area next to my clock running. I have recently taken my puter to a friend/tech and he cleaned up my puter of the viruses it had and the spy/adware it had, ran some hardware tests and memory tests and claimed everything was fine not the case.my puter shouldnt be experiencing these prob.anyone have a clue? Also I forgot to mention that I checked my sys startup and the main thing that seems to be running the most is the system idle process usually at 99 nothing else seems to be taking anything and there are about 30-35 processes running.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo today, I jumped on my computer, opened up IE Explorer, and went to Facebook. While facebook was loading, my computer seemed to have froze for roughly ten seconds. I figured it was just a random hang up so I ignored it. Unfortunately, about 45 seconds later, it did it again, and it continued to do so, even now while I am typing. I was browsing through the forums and I noticed a few people had the same problem as me, so I tried disabling the Search Indexer. I restarted my computer, and it seemed to have done the trick, but maybe 3 minutes later, it started freezing again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy problem started on Wednesday night. I was playing Guild Wars, an online game when my computer froze up. I didn't get the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death', but rather my screen went blank. I thought this was a repeat of an earlier problem I had encountered with the game, and I figured my previous solution would work.
I checked my BIOS and there seemed to be nothing wrong and my AGP settings were as they were previously, with my card operating at 4x because it was what solved my problem previously.
I work in a computer lab at a community health center. I just started working there and I realized no one in the building had any of the admin passwords to the computers. I brought in a Windows password reset disc and reset all of the admin passwords. This is when I got the bright idea to install the Adobe creative sweet at work off of my external HD. I only tried this on my computer, and the installation failed. Half of the CS was installed and half wasn't. This seemed to have caused some problems for me.When I attempted to startup the computer, my desktop would load, but some of the icons wouldn't fully load (they were stuck as the default exe icon). I could move my mouse, but when I put the cursor over the Start menu button, all I got was an hour glass. I couldn't click on any of icons at all.
I rebooted into safe mode and it worked perfectly. I tried to remove the CS in add/remove programs, but it failed. I think this is because it wasn't fully installed. I deleted all of the folders I could find (other then flash player and adobe reader), then downloaded the CS4 cleanup script, but this failed to clean up my system as well. When I went back into add/remove programs and tried to uninstall the CS, it said it had already been removed, and it disappeared off the list. Something tells me it isn't fully removed.I tried a selective startup where I turned off all of the startup programs. This seemed to have worked. So I started going back throught the list allowing some of the start up items. I thought that it was the CS4 startup programs that were causing my troubles (which for the most part they were), but now even with ALL startup values disabled, it still freezes.I can use the internet, but if I click on the start menu it takes a while to load. When it finally loads, whether I click off of it or on a program, it disappears and my computer freezes. I can still use my mouse.
My computer restarts once in a while at random times. I don't think it has anything to do with the programs I use at the time because it seems to restart even if I'm not doing anything but listen to music. There are also times when my computer just stops. However, sometimes the error messages are different. I've received 0x0000007F and 0x000000DE error messages before. I've tried replace my old 300 watt power supply with a 420, but I still get error messages. I've run memtest and found no errors with my memory. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got back from LA, and like any person would, I went straight to check my email. After around 30 mins of reading through mail, the entire screen froze. The mouse wouldn't move, the loading bar just stopped, etc.
After around 10 mins, everything unfroze. I haven't installed any programs recently, and my computer worked fine before I left. This happens on average once every half an hour. Also, this only apparently happens on my account, not any other.
I've had this problem for over a year now, and posted this on several tech support forums, and to no avail. So here's my problem.I built my computer about a year ago, and after a couple of weeks of usage, I noticed that my computer would randomly freeze when I'm playing games, using IM clients, and P2P software, although it would also freeze when I'm pretty much using any program (it just seems freezing during games is the most common).I think this is purely a software issue because I'm dual-booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04, and I don't have this problem in Ubuntu.
I uninstalled my onboard sound card drivers because I have a dedicated sound card (I thought those drivers were conflicting), but this didn't solve the issue. I took out one of my video cards (I'm running an SLI system) and that didn't solve it. I uninstalled reinstalled my video card drivers, to no avail.I reseated my sound card and video card, and that didn't work.
My pc takes ages to boot up and when it does it has started to randomly freeze. I've ran various scans such as registry mechanic and spyware doctor and nothing has been found.

View 14 Replies View Relatedi'm running a custom built pc with windows xp home sp2, amd sempron processor 3300+ 2ghz, 10/08/2005-sis-760-6a7i7fkac-00 motherboard (according to aida32), 512mb ram. often, when i play an audio or video file, it plays perfectly well for a while (ranging from a few seconds to several minutes) and then audio is completely lost (also Internet videos only will play for 2 seconds after this happens). at first i thought that maybe it was a software problem, but it still occurs with each multimedia application i have. the sound returns on a reboot, but the problem still occurs all the time. any ideas about how to solve this?
also, on a slightly unrelated note, the pc also sometimes freezes; usually when several applications are running, bit it has been known to happen when barely anything is open. strangely, the cursor will not move, but remains on screen for a few seconds and then disappears completely. is this due to a lack of ram, or is there another way to solve this?i hope i have provided enough information.
