Cleaning All The Spyware - No Registry Back Up
Nov 10, 2005
After cleaning all the spyware off of my computer and gaining control back, I am still left with one last thing. There is a Blue "Spyware Infection" Screen that wont seem to go away. I am not real versed in Registry use but I was informed to
Start Regedit
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesSystem
Delete the entry 'Wallpaper.htm'

I've been to rid my computer (Windows XP) of spyware and such, uneeded stuff running, as I can only get dial up and it's slow enough at best! If I can figure out how to get this Hijack This log attached, I would sure appreciate it if someone could look at it and what maybe should'nt be there.

I have uninstalled several programs from my computer.
I was wondering if it is safe to delete the system file in the Registry? or if something bad would happen?

I have several registry cleaning tools on my PC like registry mechanic,WinASO registry Optimizer and those included in my programs ASMW PC-Optimizer,Tune-up utilities and WinTools.net Professional. One thing I am puzzled is that all the registry cleaning tools have found certain problems when I run one after another.Once i completed my registry scan using all above tools and fix all problems,I can't understand why a number of registry problems still exist the next day.I did not carry out any important task other than just spend the most 1 hr of web surfing.
Recommend a more powerful registry cleaning tool to curb such problem.

What are recommended programs for cleaning your registry? I tried to use Registry Mechanic, but for some reason it gave me the error message that it could not locate the file map.dat,I verified that the file was there in the correct location. Are there any other programs I could try?

I have Windows xp Home. How many times should I clean out the registry? I have done a lot of cleaning of files and registry entries in the past but do not know what would be a acceptible limit for a guy who uses his pc everday most of the day. I like it fast I have 2 gigs of ram and use an dsl connect and a Intel App acclelerator. Sometomes wierd things happen like my floppy disk will run for a split second after I am on the pc for about 30 min. then stop and my pc will not always boot up and say that an improper frequency has happened. After I re-boot all is well. This does not happen all the time.

I see that you advertise Registry Booster 2. I have downloaded the trial version of the thing and it did a scan and found about 300 errors-it said. It "fixed" about 30 of them or so. But now I am facing a dilemma.
1.) The free version doesn't allow me to restore the registry items it quarantined. I don't even know if those registries need to be restored, either. My PC doesn't seem to be affected much.
2.) Is it worth getting the full version and going through with registry cleaning?
3.) Is it even safe to ever use any kind of external registry cleaning operation?
4.) I do have some loose or nonexistant paths, some from a photo program that is no longer working properly on one the administrator accounts (there are three on this pc.) But I have received instructions from the photo program site on how to remove the registries of the program and all traces, so that I can remove the photo program in its entirety (Nero). It had been installed as an extra sweetener to encourage me to buy this machine ( A Power Spec 9201, with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. I have IE 6.0).

Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER).On the menu bar click on file, then export, choose where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it. System Restore (it should save a copy daily, but you can always create a restore point manually. The best method, in my opinion, is to download and run ERUNT. It's the best registry backup utility available.

While troubleshooting a failed internet connection (Windows XP Home, SP 2) I installed Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 (probably a beta version) that wasn't downloaded from the windows website. I've since uninstalled it, so I am now running IE 6, but IE 7 left something behind. Now, when I connect to the internet I get to my home page, but when I select a link I get a blank web page and the error message "Windows cannot find (null). Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search.Through research on the internet I've found that the registry key "C93E5AB5-7B71-4C31-B6B2-7F922A551EFF" needs to be deleted to fix my problem. I've tried with no success. I've tried adding "Everyone" to the registry users, changing the permissions so all users can access the registry and tried to delete the key, downloaded Registry Fix software, I've tried deleting it using regedit and regedt32 and I've run the program IE7betakey.reg with no success.

i have a problem with IE in the URL address bar i get "10 kinghost", this looks like a porn site. The pc is used by several staff members. I have run spybot, cw shreader, an MS anti spyware, norton antivirus. but nothing gets rid of it. Spybot finds 5 registry changes says it fixes them but when i run it again they are still there, are they the problem? Is there an easy way to remove. I have started using firefox instead, but find it slower, so want to revert back to IE.

Need something to back up & restore the entire Windows Registry, with emphasis on ENTIRE.I have been using a utility called ERUNT to back up and restore the Windows 2000/XP registry; but, I dicovered today that it doesn't restore the entire registry. Is there a utility anywhere that will back up and restore the entire registry, preferable a free one but doesn't have to be free if it's cheap?

My three PCs run XP Pro with all patches. I am going to give a try to making some registry changes to tweak some things. Other than making a restore point, what is the best simple method to back up the registry, and be 99.999999999 % confident that you will be able to restore it should things go down the tubes. I would like to have a redundant backup in some method other than a restore point.

I came back later, turned it on, and BAM! I ended up with a blue screen whining about not being able to load a registry hive, C:WindowsSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE in particular. So I google searched on my brothers machine for a way to fix it, which pretty much involved loading up 6 annoying Win XP boot floppies that takes days to load (Ok i'm exagerating a little there....) and getting into the Recovery Console to perform some copy/delete commands to get myself back to previous registry files.
Which to my dismay, I found out that it took me back to the stone age (like when XP was first installed, infact to me it seemded like it had gone back even further).

There are two excellent spyware removal apps available and they are both FREE so there is no reason to not use them regularly. The two best apps there are for removing spyware are SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU USE BOTH OF THESE APPS SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES AND VICE VERSA, YOU ARE NOT SAFE USING JUST ONE OF THEM. There is one other app that I HIGHLY recommend is for spyware prevention, SpywareBlaster. This app sets certain registry entries that prevent spyware from ever installing, it DOES NOT run in the background using any resources, you just set it and forget it. Once you have installed these three MUST HAVE apps you then need to update them and keep them up to date. I would recommend checking for updates weekly, it’s just like your antivirus app, you need to stay protected from the latest spyware out there. To update SpyBot just open the app from your start menu (use the advanced mode option) and select “search for updates” it will then show you what updates are available for download, always install all the updates. Another feature that SpyBot has is called “Immunize”, you will see an icon for it. Select the icon and under “Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity” select “Immunize” this works in the same way as SpywareBlaster in blocking new spyware. It also gives you the option of locking your hosts file against hijackers, I highly recommend using this option as well. To update Ad Aware just open it and select “Check for updates now”. For SpywareBlaster it is mostly the same, open it up and select “Check for updates” once you update this you then must select “select all” and then “Protect against checked items” so that the updates you just did take effect. Anything these apps find is spyware and should be removed, if you choose not to remove what is found then you have no one to blame if your pc crashes due to spyware or your privacy is invaded (including these companies stealing your credit card number and identity

I did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again. How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.

I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?

Are you guys having the same problem? Using IE7, when viewing a thread, if I hit the back arrow to go back to the page I was previously viewing, it doesn't move at all. It started acting weird a couple of days ago when it took sometimes two hits on the back arrow to go back. Now it doesn't go back to the previous page at all.

I moved a hd (with xp, programs, settings, etc) from my old pc to a new one that already has xp pro. This old hd is going to be used for archiving only, but it has a lot of files, xp os and settings that I want to get rid off.
How to accomplish it? Cleaning the whole stuff isn't the case as some files/programs will be kept as is.

I want to ask how I am suppose to blow the inside components of my pc using compressed air, because wouldn't the dust go in the pc even more when I blow it? How am I suppose to blow it out? Blow behind the dust so the air would
repel and blow it out?
Is this a good method for ESD precautions (without a gounding strap):
- Not working on a carpet
- Not wearing footwear
- Working on a wooden table
- Touch the back of the computer before opening it
- Touch the Metal Case of the Power Supply (inside) frequently while the
computer is open
- Not moving on the floor too much
