I have tried FIXMBR, FIXBOOT and now trying to reinstall using the guide in another thread. I do not get the same R option when I get to the SETUP screen. It looks to me like it will fresh install XP and wipe everything. Originally I was getting missing SYSTEM file and boot stops. I found what I thought was the SYSTEM file and put it into the directory but it still will not boot. I just get another new error.

H i have an old 80gb drive that i wish to use for storage by use of a hard drive enclosure. It had an old xp installed on it which ino longer wish to use, but when i hook it up to the pc the drive doesn't show up, i mounted the drive on a linux(ubuntu) system and managed to delete everything except the windows folder, i believe the ntfs file system is stopping it from being deleted, my question is how can i delete the windows folder so that i can format and reuse the drive without putting it into the pc, any further info needed will be duly supplied

I installed Ubuntu (a popular Linux distribution) a few days ago. I had Windows XP. It was fine but I had very little RAM: 256 MB (-32MB of which is shared with the video card) with which Feisty Fawn (the version 7.04 of Ubuntu is called this - it is the latest) would run really slow. So my friend suggested I use a live CD of GNOME Partition Editor, create the partitions and turn the swap on before I started installing Ubuntu. I created 3 partitions of ext3 format on my 160GB Hard disc for Root, Home and Swap which were 20GB, 10 GB, and 1 GB respectively. I had not yet installed Ubuntu.

I have a problem with Win XP not loading. It stops during the loading process. It does not matter if I try a normal boot, any of the safe mode boots or boot from a startup disk. I know what he problem and what the for the problem is, but I do not know how to accomplish the fix. The problem is caused by a corrupted driver file (agp440.sys). This is for video. If I do a normal boot it stops at tis file. The fix is to disable the file. But to do that I have to have Win loaded. I need a utility that will by pass the Win boot process and give me access to the files on the HDD so I can disable the agp440.sys file. I cannot find such a utility.
Some startup/recovery disks claim to not use Win to boot, but the one's I have tried stop installing at the same place Win XP stops, at the agp440.sys file. MS has a KB for the problem, but it requires being able to access the files on the HDD and disable the agp440.sys file. I could take the HDD out and connect it to another box to do the disabling, but I currently do not have another box. I an in a remote location without easy access to another computer. how I can make the repair without erasing the HDD, reformatting it and reinstalling everything?

My friends year old HP Pavilion laptop is taking an extremely long time to finish booting. It seems to boot fine until you select a user account and log on. The desktop and start-up apps seem to load in a timely fashion as well. However, if you try to launch any app (taskmgr, IE, Windows explorer, etc.) during the first 5-10 mins of operation, the entire computer stops responding for 5 min or so. The app will eventualy start, yet any other input will cause the computer to stop responding again. After 10 mins or so, everything starts to function normally.
When I have managed to get taskmgr open, the only activity seem to come from svchost, csrss and occasionally some of the Symantec and Spysweeper processes. She has run Norton Anti-virus and Spysweeper scans and found nothing. I have also scanned it with Trend Micros house call. Nothing looks amiss in the event viewer either. A couple months back her registry became corrupt and the computer would not boot period. I managed to manually restore the registry hives using the recovery console, and the computer had functioned perfectly until 2 weeks ago. Here is the hijachthis log file:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 6:27:03 PM, on 4/10/2007
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16414)
Running processes:
C:WINDOWSSystem32smss.exe

This computer has begun to need re-booting many times per day. There are numerous problems commencing with startup, so I'll begin there.I run Ad-aware 6, Spybot S&D and HijackThis frequently in order to try to prevent intrusions, but something seems to have failed!Upon startup, there is (recently) always a ZoneAlarm message saying that "explorer.exe is trying to access the internet" Although I have clicked the box for my (Deny) response to be remembered, the message has appeared at each startup for the last month or so, and I'm tired of that.Likewise, ZoneAlarm asks for permission to allow Firefox to access the internet shows up each time I start that even though I've told ZA to remember it.

I'm getting quite annoyed at the problems that I think Explorer is causing.Things generally run fine until I open Explorer if I need to copy files etc. Most times, but not all the time, it will stop repsonding and i need to end the task in task manager. The rest of the system works without problem.I have attached a Hijack This log file. Even when the log file opened (txt format) it stopped resoponding and I had to use Task Manager to close the log file.

I was playing a game as I normal and the pc hanged momentarily (made a buzzing noise and the screen froze) then the pc restarted itself. As it restarted, it rebooted 2 times after seeing the bluescreem. NOW, when I turn the pc on, it comes to the advanced windows startup menu (safemode, previous setting etc), I press enter on any of the options and the pc just hangs there. It just freezes from the moment I press enter, the keyboard stops working aswell. I checked the hardware when it happens, the fans are still working. The only thing is, the red light in the front stops blinking. But overall, it seems like the system just turned itself off internally or something.

my names Neil and I'm from Washington state, Ive had problems trying to install xp pro on my computer. Let's see so far ive tried everything from different hard drives to taking out all hardware not needed. I've even went online and downloaded killdisk to reformat my drives so that they are completely reformatted. Let's see...every time I try to install xp pro this is what i do. First I go into the bios and redirect the the cd to main boot then my hard drive then my floppy, in that order. I reboot my computer with the xp disc in the drive. Following that I create a new partition and begin the install, it installs all of the files it needs to run xp setup, then it comes to the screen that says it has to reboot, it does and then it comes to "hit any button to boot from cd" I dont hit anything. It continues to the next screen, the loading xp screen, and it always stops loading there and freezes. If someone can help that would be great! Itz driving me crazy, and I really really want to fix this pc myself, instead of bringing it to a comp shop.

I recently downloaded SP3 and I didn't have SP1a so I had to get installed that first in order to installed SP3 over it. Since then I am experiencing this problem with the above thread i386/kdcom.dll file is corrupted when I try to set up with booting with Windows XP professional CD and I do not have floppy drive to boot it with set up or repair floppies of NT operating system. Actually this problem happened due to ADOBE updates every now and then pops up to install when I do it says failed to install with reason "either your computer is running in Safe mode or windows setup is corrupted and tells me to reset it but it won't let me set it up or boot the disc.
I already have checked the CMOS bios and the prime master is the hard disc and secondary master is the CD ROM. Otherwise my PC is running fine with proper speed Also it won't let me uninstall my older version of ADOBE 9.2 program from AD REMOVE list. Please tell me what to do. The error code it gives me while trying to boot is 4096 also says INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupted.

My laptop keyboard has a strange problem. If the computer sits idle for a couple of hours, the keyboard stops working normally. I can't type any text;
however, the keys will respond as shortcut keys. For example, if I open Word and type F, the file menu will appear. My built in touch pad also will not function normally. If I double click on an icon, it brings up the properties screen for that item. When I restart my computer, I am not able to type into the logon screen at all with my keyboard.
I have attached a USB keyboard to my laptop, but I still can't type right away. The only thing that works is for my to restart my computer two or three times, they press CLT-ALT-DEL on my USB keyboard. Most of the time after a couple of tries,I can type into this secondary logon screen with the USB keyboard. Once Windows is open, my regular laptop keyboard works fine again. This is until I leave it idle for a while.

this problem started out of the blue one day i turn on my laptop and everything is fine ... but once it gets to the "boot screen" (the one that has the windows logo and the loading bar) the thing turns slow and it stays on that screen for at least 5 minutes, after that, the whole windows startup takes another 5 minutes... to finally end up with a slow working computer. it's slow but it still works alright but once i try to open wmp or itunes to listen to music or even watch videos from Internet, the whole cpu usage goes to 100% and the song starts skipping and "lagging" and the computer works slower than usual.

After several hardware failures I installed windows.
But it wont boot, it stops at "Verifying DMI Pool Data"
I've tried a lot of things including:
Reinstall windows- didn't work
Reset the CMOS- Didn't work, but this time it says Verifying DMI Pool Data......Update Success then nothing.
Tried only one ram stick (I have 4 gigs)- got the update success thing again
Checked boot settings and checked drive settings- everything was right.

I had had 2 operating system on 2 hard drives (XP and Vista) I took vista off and replaced it with media center. I could boot both xp and media center but the vista boot screen always shows up and would have to go into "ealier versions of windows" and choose my OS from there. I read somewhere to get rid of the vista boot screen I should delete "bootmgr" file and "boot" folder from the root of C: I did this and now nothing works. It tries to boot into vista boot screen but it says files are missing and resets

When i booted up my pc to put some coursework on a usb stick, it failed to boot to xp. It went to the "xp was not shutdown properly, boot to safe mode, or last known working settings screen, ETC". None of the options work, i have tried all of them, safe mode and last known working settings included. When i select one of the options, the hardrive spins up, and then my gfx card bios info and mobo splash screen come on. Well, i think it might be because i ran a 'virus remover' for the game gmod, this was the first time the computer had been booted since i ran it.

I have a laptop (IBM Thinkvantage Thinkpad) and when i boot it does the following:Shows motherboard graphic Goes to "Starting windows." with a loading bar under it.Stops and says "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:WINNTSYSTEM32CONFIG SYSTEMced" Now i know that that means the hive file is too big and i know how to fix it But I don't have a Win2k boot disk and i don't have any floppy drives installed I had an idea to try and do a network boot through the BIOS setup which it does allow but i don't really have any server programs to "host" a network boot with my Windows XP desktop.

Please reinstall.I'm using a Dell Dimension 2400. I've tried finding the file on the resource disk and in the XP installation disk. I've been online through another computer and found the dll but can't seems to install in on my Dell. I've tested everything through my resource disk and everything tests fine.

I just built a new PC for my dad and was installing XP home and it was partially done copying the files to the hard drive, then it got an error saying the ntsf.sys file was messed up and it shut down windows to prevent damage to the system. Then I rebooted thinking it would want to reinstall an OS, but it just loads to the first screen where it displays your video card type and it says
Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery...
Checking for floppy...
floppy not found!
Checking for CD_ROM...
CD-ROM found.
Reading file "P4P800SE.ROM".
Start Erase...
Start Program...
Flash Failed!
I couldn't get to the CMOS settings during the power on, so I manually reset them by taking out the on-board battery and switching the jumper on the mobo to reset them then replacing the jumper to its normal spot and put the battery back. After doing this, when i boot up it still says Bad BIOS checksum. And i have no idea what to do. I'm guessing part of the problem is that windows is partially installed.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Microsoft XP Home. My machine did not ship with a XP Home setup CD so I cannot follow the windows prompt. I have heard about dell system restore CDs, however I'm not sure if one came with my machine, and if so where it is. If this is what I need can an ISO be downloaded anywhere online? I do know that there is some type of partition on my HD, however I'm not sure exactly what it consists of or how to find out.In case anyone asks, I cannot boot windows in safe mode. If possible I would like to try to repair this problem without a complete reformat and reinstall as my data is only partially backed up. Additionally I have considered the possibility that this issue is the result of a HD crash, however I am not sure how I would go about testing this. Lastly if a reformat and re-install is necessary is there anyway to backup "My Documents" without starting windows?
