Administrative Privileges While Trying To Install Anything
Nov 7, 2007
I seem to be havning a problem with my xp when it comes to administrative privileges. Whenever try to install a agame or some other program that needs administrative privileges it won't let me. I'm the only person who uses this computer, I don't have a network or anything. I tried creating a new user account, nothing, I tried using system restore from a week ago where I wasn't having the problem, still nothing. Anyone know what could possibly be wrong?

I run across certain things that won't allow me to view (such as downloaded games) and I get a message saying
"There has been an unknown error! If you are running windows 2000, you may need a user with more privileges. Please contact your system administrator".

I somehow ended up in a place that showed Administrative Privileges and I noticed my son had privileges to change things so I changed it so he couldn't. Problem is now I can't now do anything. It says I don't have
administrative privileges anymore. I can't even change the time on the clock.

I am having various problems with programs that won't install/uninstall, specifically uninstalling ZoneAlarm free firewall, which also happens to run its initial "Configuration Wizard/Tutorial" every time I log onto Windows from any account. When trying to uninstall, it falsely tells me I need to rerun them from an "Administrators account" I have two accounts on WinXP, both admins, and have even tried in Safe Mode 'Administrator' account and get the same error no matter what. I have scanned with RegistryMechanic(registered), Adaware Personal SE(free), Housecall (FullScan), and Norton Antivirus. No traces of virus/trojans, but BonsaiBuddy & eUniverse spyware kept coming back until I ran Adaware without System Restore on. Now there are no traces of either, but still having problems

I'm the full admin on my computer, but any program I'd like to install says I need administrative privelages, although it says I am on my account, and on others, I've tried going to guest and back to admin, but nothing happens! Hopefully a wipe is not in order, as I have many things I'd like to save on my HD.

I do not have administrative rights on the computor at work. When I attempt to either download an update or do other simple tasks, I receive a message informing me I either must have administrative rights or to contact the assigned administrator. I really don't want to contact the IT guy because that department is short staffed. Is there any way I can add my name as an administrator?

I am trying to run cmd.exe with admin privileges, but I get "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." I get this error on two of my three XP PCs. I was able to run this last week on at least one of the PCs where it is now not working. I can't find any obvious reason why it no longer works. Any suggestions what to check?
ADDITIONAL INFO1. All three computers are running the same firewall/virus software.
2. All three are XP SP3 and at the same MS patch level.

I recently purchased a Texas Instrument TI- 84 Plus Silver Edition Graphic Calculator and when I tried to load the accompanying TI CONNECT software, my computer would only allow part of it to load. Actually the program loads it is when the program goes to "setup" that I receive an error message telling me that I am not an admistrator; therefore, cannot complete the setup. When all is send and done, there are some functions the calculator will perform but the major functions will not like loading anything to and from the computer to the calculator. When I use the Screen Capture function it will do so, indicating that the two are communciating. Other processes will not function however.

I changed from a domain to a workgroup on a work computer that stays at home, but remotely access the network via the internet. I had to reboot, however it turns out the account I was using is on the remote domain, so I cannot log in. I don't have the administrator password, and would like to somehow set the domain back to what it was earlier so I can log in again. How would I go about doing this?

Today when I tried to reboot a Windows 2000 Server box it proceeds through the startup process VERY slowly and when it finally gets to the login box and I enter the administrative username and password that has always worked in the past, I get the following error:userinit.exe - Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application. When I click OK the desktop will not come up and the server is useless. I have seen some other information about this error, but most of them assume that the computer is accessible. I have not been able to get to a desktop normally or through any safe mode options.

I must have clicked on something online before i knew it i had trojan downloaders 'generic 7.rnn' on my system. Avg free version healed most of what it could find which was about 3 threats: autorun.exe, printer.exe and one other.Further scans are revealing nothing now and i've lost all my admin abilities. I go for a basic run command into the control panel e.g 'control access.cpl' and i get a message saying 'this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your system administrator. The control panel has dissappeared too.

In all the years I've been running Windows, I never used the features provided in setting up Users Some of my friends and family have told me that care must be used to set up Users because the wrong setup can bite you or, you can lock yourself out of the logon if you're not careful.Where can I get a comprehensive guide? Folks are telling me I need to browse the Internet (I use Firefox) with a restricted user, rather than as Administrator, but the Windows Help is a bit esoteric about that.

Computer I have came with Windows XP pro. It had one account available called Administrator. I wanted to change this and found it would not let me change the name. So I opened another account (with my name) and gave it administrator privileges. As far as I know, you can have more than one administrator account. Every thing seemed OK until I logged out. When I came to log back in, only one account (this time mine) was available.Problem is that there seems no way to get back in to the Administrator account. Since most of the files went to that account when I used the files and settings wizard, it effectively stops me using the files.
