Active Programs Aren't Shown Anymore
Apr 8, 2006
There were some new features on my taskbar, the language bar to be exact. Now I went to the taskbar properties, selected toolbars and disabled the language bar. Afterwards I shoveled a bit with the positioning of the mediaplayer in my taskbar and all a sudden my active programs aren't shown anymore.

I have noticed that sometimes when I look at the task manager that there are programs there that I have terminated. For the most part they are not using CPU time, but are still on the list. The exception is iexplore.exe which is using 50% of CPU time (dual core machine) and causing the system to become unresponsive. I have tried using the right click, terminate process on these entries and nothing happens. They still remain in the list.
I have tried to restart computer and it will not restart. It goes through some motions of attempting to end unresponsive programs, but then nothing happens. The only way out is to hold down the power button until the computer shuts off which is supposed to be a bad way to turn it off.

A friend has a new HP desktop with Win XP Home. He told me that something pops up - usually every two minutes - and nothing happens.I saw the following: stop all active programs, click the desktop, wait a while, and sure enough, the cursor gets a small hourglass and then returns to normal. If you are in any other program when this happens, you lose focus and have to regain it manually.I'm at a loss as to how to detect what, exactly, is going on.Do any of you have any suggestions as to how to monitor this to determine the culprit?

Ever since I downloaded Windows Explorer 7 I have serious problems with ordinary functions, like double clicking on URLs or highlighted items. In hotmail it won't let me delete spam, but other clicks it allows me. Copying and pasting is also non-functional. I also use Firefox, so now I do almost everything on it.
Another problem is that my computer won't let me download programs that require Active X., not even its own Windows programs. How can I change that? I think that although I've always owned the computer, the pc doesn't recognize me as having administrative powers. That may because my computer repair guy tinkered with the controls.

I recently re-installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro because of a patched user32 virus that caused me problems it seems to be gone now since the re-install. But now since I re-installed Windows XP, my dvd and cd drives don't show up in Windows. In BIOS they are recognized as ch.0 master and ch.0 slave drives. But in Windows they're not there in My Computer or Device Manager. I pop in a disc and it spins around but nothing happens.

This week on a minority of the websites I go on regularly the text and images aren't loading and only the background comes up. This isn't a problem with the websites as I've tried them on another PC and they come up fine. The info bar at the bottom says that the images are downloading but it's happening really slowly and even when it finishes there's still nothing. Before that happens it also says "error on page" then "done but with errors on page".

I used this Parallel marked especially for Direct Connection file transfer. Now. I set up this connection on both computers. both have Windows XP, both are Service Pack 2. One as the host, and one as the guest. however. while I can directly connect the two, niether of the computers show in terms of shared files or even workgroup computers. I don't know how to get this to work, and I cannot afford any USB cables.

Okay, guys, you've all been great in helping with my computer issues. One more and I think I'll be out of your hair for a while at least. The situation is I've got a computer running XP, but the hard drive is a little too small. I had a larger hard drive in my 98 machine and I've slaved that drive and installed it in this computer. I've moved everything I need to the C drive temporarily and I want to reformat the D drive to wipe out everything on it. Problem is, I know how to do it from a DOS prompt but XP doesn't seem to have one. How do I format this drive (mainly want to get rid of the operating system)?

Last nite, I picked up a worm or virus. It added doser.exe, and a dialer, and some others to my Windows/system32 folder. I went into safe mode and got them out.But now, I can't get any images on my desktop. It doesn't even show an option to do it from the properties window. The browse button is greyed out. However, it DOES show the background right after it boot up. At that time, there are no icons. Then the background becomes a solid color and the icons appear. Otherwise, the system SEEMS to be running fine.

I have xp home with the current media player. When I click on a cda file from a music cd I get this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. If the file is on another computer, verify that you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify that it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available.
It plays mp3's, but quit playing cda music cd's. Any help is appreciated.

some hours ago, I tried to run regedit as usual by using "Start | Run", but it said:regedit.exe - Unable To Locate ComponentThis application has failed to start because clb.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.
I checked my running processes as well as restarted the PC. clb.dll was located at SysWOW64 (being a 32-bit dll, obviously) but not at System32 (where only 64-bit-files are stored), copying it to System32 didn't change anything. After a while of searching the inet in vain I realized I hadn't tried to start regedit.exe or regedt32.exe in SysWOW64 (but regedt32.exe in System32, which gives the error), and surprisingly, it worked. Still the problem remains: I can't start it using "Run" anymore (which worked since 18.05.2005), and I didn't change anything big but uninstalled WindowBlinds (a windows skinning software which worked quite well for many months). Could WindowBlinds be the reason, and if so, how? Moreover, will I experience further problems?(msconfig still works normally and can be started by "Run"; often, this isn't possible when encountering the regedit clb.dll error).

I am in desperate need of help. My Windows Xp Home Edition Sp2 (up to date) will not boot. I turn it on, and it comes up to the welcome screen, the screen looks as if it is still loading, but i click on my account (1 of 5 others) to login, and suddenly the other icons disappear and the hour-glass appears as if loading, but it just stays that way. I was able to logon prior to this and the characteristics were similar, some of my desktop icons were missing and my norton internet security came up with an error report saying something about not being able to properly run along with my mouse driver and my free ram xp pro came up with errors. I shrugged it off and went to look at the event viewer, but before i could start it up the blue error screen came up. I didn't copy down the entire code (figuring it would come up
again.

I only have 1 user on my computer, but it doesn't automatically log-in for me anymore. I never changed the settings, it just did on it's own this morning for some reason. Also, now for some reason instead of going to a screen saver when I'm inactive for like 10 minutes, it will instead take me back to the log in screen. Also, how can I stop Windows Messenger (a weak version of MSN Messenger) from starting when I turn on my computer? I'm using Windows XP.
