I used this Parallel marked especially for Direct Connection file transfer. Now. I set up this connection on both computers. both have Windows XP, both are Service Pack 2. One as the host, and one as the guest. however. while I can directly connect the two, niether of the computers show in terms of shared files or even workgroup computers. I don't know how to get this to work, and I cannot afford any USB cables.
View 7 RepliesMy XP home edition recently crashed and I wasn't able to get it back up and running with the recovery disc. I ended up using another hard drive and installing XP Pro. I now have the original drive connected as a slave drive but I am unable to access the files I had in Documents and Settings under my user name. It gives me an "access denied" message when I try and open anything under user. When I try to transfer the files with the File Transfer Wizard, the folder comes up blank, but I know the files are there, one of the steps of selecting the files, shows them all there, but even when I select the files individually and transfer them to the C drive with the file wizard, they are not there.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have removed the 4 Gbyte hard drive from my wife's old Compaq laptop and am running it on my desktop in a drive enclosure as an external drive. The desktop is running XP Pro SP2. The laptop drive has XP Home SP2 and Office 2000 on it, but I don't (can't) use them since it is now an external plug-in drive. I'm currently copying data files off the laptop drive into the desktop drive.
I want to erase and reformat the drive from the laptop to use for file backups and transfers. But I don't want to lose the ability to LEGALLY install the XP on a future machine

But now since I re-installed Windows XP, my dvd and cd drives don't show up in Windows. In BIOS they are recognized as ch.0 master and ch.0 slave drives. But in Windows they're not there in My Computer or Device Manager. I pop in a disc and it spins around but nothing happens.

This isn't a problem with the websites as I've tried them on another PC and they come up fine.The info bar at the bottom says that the images are downloading but it's happening really slowly and even when it finishes there's still nothing.Before that happens it also says "error on page" then "done but with errors on page".

So I decided to play Mabinogi again , a RPG game, installed my driver, downloaded Direct X 9.0 , but when I checked DXDIAG, the current version of direct x was still 8.1. I have a the Radeon X300/X550 series for my VGA. Is my VGA perhaps too old to support Direct X 9.0? Or can you show me how to overwrite 8.1 with 9.0.

it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"

View 8 Replies View RelatedFirst, when I go to install the ATI software and the installation screen for Windows XP Driver comes up....I get a Severe warning saying "Zero Device Instance Error" button. What does that mean? The rest of the installation goes fine but the TV tuner part will not work.It says Direct X is not installed and that there is no capture device.So, I tried to install Direct X again. When I go to install Direct X 9.0 I get a message that the "framedyn.dll" file cannot be found, so Direct X does not install properly.

I checked that my computer was found to be suitable, and I downloaded it from CNET (of course). It's on my computer somewhere...I think, on finishing the download I was required to declare somewhere to install it and I have absolutely no idea where that should/could be. Normally a download is followed by an automatic installation point and I just accept that suggestion. OK, hopeless, I'll say it for you! Can you possibly tell me...nicely...what I should now do? It works fine that way, but when I plug the ethernet cable in directly to the DSL modem and shut down the router, I get the "page cannot be displayed" message, even though the icon shows that I am connected and the lights are green. I know it is just something with my settings, but cannot get it figured out. I would like this to work, because a direct connection downloads faster and sometimes the wireless does not work due to interference.
View 6 Replies View Relateda couple days ago, while doing my usual browsing for pics, i saved some pics to my usual picture folder and noticed the pics weren't there or anywhere on my hard drive. i tried saving the pics to my desktop, documents, an external hard drive, etc... and the pics are nowhere to be found. i did a complete computer search and the pics are nowhere to be found. i open mozilla firefox and my yahoo toolbar is gone but google toolbar is still there, i click view and yahoo and another toolbar aren't even listed. internet download manager is no longer viewed when i right click

I have a batch file (.bat) & how do I know if it's running or not? When I double click on the .bat file, it opens a second file. With no specified extension, in properties it is just a "FILE". So does that mean it is running or not?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to restore an HP PC that shipped with XP Home OEM. The restore disk is damaged and a few files in the i386 folder are unreadable. My ultimate goal is to reinstall XP home without purchasing another license because technically I still own the license, but the CD is damaged.
My question is. Is there a difference between the OEM version the HP used and the OEM version that I purchased with hardware? Is it possible to install my OEM version with the serial number on the PC?
I was also pondering trying to recreate the disk by replacing the damaged files in i386 folder with files from another version of home OEM using nlite.
Recently, I tried to run some old MS-DOS games under WinXP. This problem started happening randomly and now I cannot run checkdisk at all on reboot. Basically I cannot run Checkdisk at all on my OS drive because it always says in Windows that it is in use and needs to run the scan on next reboot. After I reboot, the above error message displays (see thread title).I've ran a virus scan and spyware/adware scans and I'm now pretty sure that it isn't the issue. I've tried disabling all non-essential services in services.msc and disabling all startup items under msconfig.exe, neither of which made any difference.I'm really beating my head against the wall on this one, I have no idea what the cause is?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a PC that had numerous defunct users, some from old defunct workgroups. I thought I'd consolidate. I moved a bunch of files and folders to a current users folder and deleted the defunct files and folders. I did this in Explore, loged in as Administrator, because these defunct users were from a previous defunct workgroups and did not show up in User Accounts/ControlPanel. As administrator I can read and wrtie to these files, but the user can't. I have marked these folders as shared and given permission to do everything to them, but the user that need them still can't write to them. As Administrator, I have assigned him to the powerUsers Group in the Users account/ControlPanel.

When I double click on them, I get the hour glass for a few seconds then nothing. Short cuts to program files and internet pages work fine. I have tried to delete and recreate the folder short cuts but still no work. System restore (for some reason) will not let me go back to before the Reg cleaning.
