Access My Old HD - System Wont Boot

Mar 22, 2006

I recently did a clean install of XP on a new HD, leaving my old drive and OS in place for later use. The drive configuration is Cable Select, with the new drive in Master position (at end of cable). The problem is that I can't seem to access my old OS on the old drive. When I boot up there is no choice of Windowx XP or ME (old OS). When I enter F8 and go to where there is a choice of OSs, XP is the only one listed.
My BIOS is set to recognize both drives and it shows them in place, with XP as the Primary Master and ME as the Slave. I tried swapping the order, but then the computer wouldn't boot.I posted over at Tom's Hardware and was told the MasterBootRecord didn't get set up properly because I installed XP when the drives were in Cable Select configuration and the only way to solve the issue would be to reset the drive jumpers to Master/Slave with XP as the Slave, and re-install the whole OS all over again, then return the drives to Cable Select.

2000 Boot Discs - Access System - Monitors No Signal

Dec 31, 2006

A friend of mine needs win 2000 Pro boot discs. I don't think this is illegal as a microsoft site says if you have problems to make from a friends. He is the only person I know who has it. Need the discs to access his system. Probably infected. Cant get it to start, shutdown, nothing. Sometimes monitor says no signal. Sometimes works. Checked wires. Put in an old spare video adapter card, starts to work fine but freezes before I can do anything. I do not have a floppy drive so I need to be able to burn them to a CD.

Won't Boot / Cannot Access Bios

Nov 9, 2009

I have a old Sony VIAO PCV-1112 with Windows XP. I was out of town (so I don't know what the trigger for the issue was) and came back to a black screen that begins with "Award Medallion Bios v 6.0". It also says "Hardware Monitor found an error. Enter power setup menu for details." At the bottom of the screen is shows: Press F1 to continue. F2 to enter setup.
a. Nothing happens when I press F2.
b. When I press F1, the Windows loading screen appears, but it fails to initialize XP and goes to a black screen that says that Windows failed to load...and it lists the prompts to reboot in Safe Mode, Normal Mode, Normal Mode with prompt, Normal Mode with Networking, Last Known Good Config, etc. No matter which mode I choose, it reboots and goes back to the Award Medallion Bios v6.0 message screen.
c. When I press Esc > F8 > F1, I am able to get the boot order to pop up and I selected boot from DVD/CD drive. I've tried putting various iso files on disc into that drive in the hopes of trying to get in to recover data files off the HDD. I tried rebooting with the ISO file in the DVD/CD drive, and nothing happens with any of these: Bit Defender; Kaspersky Rescue; or Avira Rescue. I rebooted with the Knoppix rescue ISO, and it actually initialized the DVD/CD drive for about 30 seconds - showed a black screen with a flashing prompt (couldn't type anything though) and then it went back to the Award Medallion Bios v6.0 message screen. I thought it might be the way I copied the ISO files; since when I copied them on my HP laptop, I got warning messages that not all related information would be copied. So I'm looking for an ISO copy app that might help with that? Unless I'm barking up the wrong tree...?
d. When I put in the Windows Recovery CD in that same drive, it does pull up the recovery GUI - but I don't want to loose my data. So it does recognize that Windows ISO.I'm at a loss on how to get into the VIAO hdd to try to copy down the data files that I need, before restoring Windows XP. Is there a way to connect my laptop to the PC to try to copy down the files? I'm a computer newbie, so I need a walk through on what to do.

Can't Access Internet After Re-boot

Jun 22, 2006

I'm having a problem that I could really use some help with. Two days ago I started having a problem accessing the internet after re-booting my machine. My machine is virus free, I'm sure of that. I thought it was some software that I had installed eg. ProSecurity. I uninstalled all traces of it. Still I have this problem. After re-booting I need to manually re-start my router in order to connect to internet or send/receive mail. I can get an IP but can't ping anyone. In Event Viewer I have these msg's.

1)The IP address lease 192.1 for the Network Card with network address 001151 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.XXX.XXX.X (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

2)Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 001151.The following error occurred: The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

3)The IPSEC Services service terminated with the following error:an invalid argument was supplied.

Will Not Boot Into XP / Way To Access Files On XP

Nov 18, 2009

My pc at home has been out of business for a few weeks now because it will not boot into XP (I think a virus). I have a parallel installation of Win 98 which will boot but I can not see the other C: or F: drive where I have XP installed, in My Computer, and where all my photos etc are saved (stupidly). All it shows is the 2gb in which it rests. is there a way to access the files on XP, which I assume are on a different partition from Win 98, through 98.Then I could reformat the hdd and reinstall XP (ps I don't have the XP disc now so cannot get into Recovery)

Weird Lines On Screen / Can't Boot Or Access BIOS

Jun 28, 2010

A few days ago strange lines started appearing on my computer screen. It has progressed and I could barely see anything. Then monitor kept going into "power saver" mode and back when I booted Windows in normal mode. I booted Windows in "safe mode". Monitor wasn't shutting off anymore but the screen was barely readable.I managed to save my data on external drive. I put in my Windows installation disk and restarted computer wanting to format the hard disk and reinstall Windows. When I would restart I would see black screen and hear DVD drive spinning but nothing was happening. Now when I restart I see this .This screen just stands there. I cannot access the BIOS, load Windows or boot from CD/DVD. All 3 fans in my comp work fine when computer is on. I tried removing this battery and putting it back later but it didn't help. My computer has 2 gigs RAM, runs Win XP Professional SP2 and this is my motherboard .At this point I have no idea what to do or even what caused this. I was hoping to format and reinstall Windows but I'm unable to boot.

I've scoured the internet and all the solutions tell me I need to use the Windows setup screen to get to the recovery console. My problem is that my computer never gets to the setup screen. I restart with the gateway XP disk and it looks like it's setting up, but then nothing happens, and I don't get any sort of screen that lets me access the recovery console. Is there any other way to get this thing working again, my finals are due the end of this week, and all my most recent/finished files are on this thing.

How To Recover Deleted Grub / Boot Partition (Dual Boot System)

Oct 24, 2009

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

How To Replace Master Boot Record On Dual Boot System & Delete Linux Drive

Mar 8, 2006

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

Setup Duel Boot Configuration - Slow Boot Up - Occurred Error Operating System

Oct 27, 2007

I"m running WinXP SP2 Home. Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.

My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.

What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....

Changed Boot Drive Letter From F To C - The System Does Not Boot At All

I figured that it was weird but no big deal. Well I purchased a printer for her and while trying to install the software it was giving me a "Windows - No Disk in Drive" error.

I did some research and spoke to HP tech support and they suggested that I search the web for a way to change the drive letters from H: (current hard drive) to C: (supposed to be default drive)

Restore Backup Partition - No System Boot No Cd Boot WTF

Feb 17, 2007

i was trying to restore my backup of the partition with the windows xp system on it. Of course, everything went wrong and Norton Ghost 2003 had an error at about 95%. I thought i can just boot from the win xp cd and fix the problem... no way when i try to boot from the win xp cd, i get a black screen after checking my pc configuration, no driver loading etc.

when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdisk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: STOP: 0x0000007B(0xF8958640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)

Two Hard Disc System - Crashes Boot Reports System Failure

Jul 17, 2005

I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.

Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....
