Multi Partition Boot / Multi OS Install

Jan 11, 2006

Recently I reinstalled the OS on my computer. It was shipped with Windows XP HE SP2, but I formatted and put Win98 onto the system. Needless to say, it froze up at the Windows splash screen. So, I uninstalled it and put XP back on. My question here is, is there any possible way to put Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP all on one hard drive, and it work? I know how to partition the hard drive accordingly for the deed, it's getting the computer to actually run 95, 98, and 3.1. I'm cheating fate here, since I know 3.1 probably won't run on my 32-bit structure system, but it's worth a try. My system is a Dell Dimension 4700 with 3.0 gHz CPU, 256 mb of RAM, and an nVidia 64 mb video card.

System Restore In Multi-boot Environment?

Aug 7, 2007

how System Restore works in a multi-boot environment? (I am not concerned with Vista, but with WinXP only). If I have O/S A and B, and I perform a System Restore in O/S A, is there any possibility that O/S B will also get rolled back to the same date? In O/S A, should I allow System Restore to monitor the O/S B partition, or should I switch off System Restore on that drive?

System Wont Pass The Login Screen: Getting Multi Boot Options?

Jun 19, 2006

I have a friend, seriously - it's a friend not me, that had to do the windows genuine updgrade. She paid the $150 and instead of just plugging in the new product key she inserted the CD they mailed her and started a new install of windows. It seems it had trouble locating files and now she gets a option to select which operating system at start. The setup won't continue (it can't locate files on CD - maybe bad disk) and when she selects the original XP pro setup it won't let her past the login screen.

Couldn't Open Drive Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) On Fresh Installation

Jul 9, 2005

I'm trying to install xp home on my bros comp. he used to have win 2000 pro. I backed everything up and formatted the hard drive. (75 gig ntfs). This worked great. I pulled his hard drive out and put it in my comp (secondary) I then installed xp on it. This went fine, I was even able to boot all the way to xp. The problem comes in when I tried to move the hard drive back to his comp. I could not boot past the compaq screen. I got the error message
"couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"
"ntldr: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"

How To Recover Deleted Grub / Boot Partition (Dual Boot System)

Oct 24, 2009

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

Restore Backup Partition - No System Boot No Cd Boot WTF

Feb 17, 2007

i was trying to restore my backup of the partition with the windows xp system on it. Of course, everything went wrong and Norton Ghost 2003 had an error at about 95%. I thought i can just boot from the win xp cd and fix the problem... no way when i try to boot from the win xp cd, i get a black screen after checking my pc configuration, no driver loading etc.

when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdisk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: STOP: 0x0000007B(0xF8958640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)

Multi User Logon Access To Certain Files Programs

Feb 9, 2006

setting up more than one user logon for windows xp home edition w/ sp2 installed (using fat32). What I would like to acheive (if possible) is to limit my teenagers (2) access to certain files and programs. More specifically programs such as windows explorer (including right-click on START button), access to the "RUN" command, control panel, and other system controlling programs. I have searched on C-Net and microsoft, finding bits and peices but not all together in 1 post and not a step by step. I am not afraid to edit the registry. Also I do not want to convert this comp to ntfs (unless there is a way to back up a massive amount of data without a cd/dvd burner, as I am under the impression that a re-install of XP and reformatting of hard drive is required to switch to ntfs). What would be ideal (and maybe easier to do?) would be to have teenage-user1 and teenage-user2 logon bring up only a desktop with no taskbar and/or START button, thus allowing only access to the programs that I shortcut to the desktop (this thought just occurred to me while typing this).

These children are 15 and 16 and are smart enough to type a google search for password/registry/command prompt hacks and crackers and such. I haven't seen anything in regaurds to what I am looking for all on 1 system or complete in 1 post/step-by-step. Possibly I am not typing the correct search words, but seems alot of text for a search ( am not typing "the" "and" etc. and am using/trying as many buzzwords as I can think of...) and I get no way too much irrelavent and sometimes confusing info or no matches at all. I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill with how I want to do this, as it probably has been done before, if so a link(s) would be much appreciated as would any advice from "seasoned/in-the-know" users/programmers.

Complicated Multi-operating System

Apr 4, 2006

I have a compact laptop bought second hand but has problems.

1) Firstly when it is switched on it asks to choose between either windows 98 or windows 2000 pro (the one i want to use)

2) On loading up windows 2000 it works fine however when i try to use many options such as; volume control, disk cleanup, msconfig, majority of .exe files etc it says "access to file denied" or "cannot find the file "xxx". make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available" - this is despite the file it is looking for being the one I want to use.

3) On searching futher I noticed that in my computer along with the usual WINDOWS directory. I have 2 other operating system folders in their entirity. WindowsNT and Windows 98 - I think that having all systems on my computer must be reason for it not working

4) I have tried to uninstall windows 98 using its own uninstall program however get the message "cannont find "xxx" etc

5) I have a feeling the windowsNT is just cd contents and ahs not been setup properly and could therefore simply deleted but I ahve not done so just in case

6) If i begin the laptop ion windows 98 much more works, including sound etc, however the uninstall still does not.

7) Misc problem - I cannot install any more programs when running windows 2000.

Computer Can't Able For Multi Task - System Restore

Nov 23, 2006

Out of no where my computer ceases to be able to multi-task. For example. I am playing a game while listening to music. When I hold down a button in the game to walk the music becomes choppy. I have also noticed that when I am using one program something the CPU usage is usually 88-95% usage on the program which makes it impossible to do anything else while using the program. This all started happening about 2 days after I re-installed my OS.

Also system restore doesn't seem to work. It always says "System restore failed: nothing on your hard drive was changed." but I know that the restore point is different from what I have on my computer right now.

Access My Old HD - System Wont Boot

Mar 22, 2006

I recently did a clean install of XP on a new HD, leaving my old drive and OS in place for later use. The drive configuration is Cable Select, with the new drive in Master position (at end of cable). The problem is that I can't seem to access my old OS on the old drive. When I boot up there is no choice of Windowx XP or ME (old OS). When I enter F8 and go to where there is a choice of OSs, XP is the only one listed.
My BIOS is set to recognize both drives and it shows them in place, with XP as the Primary Master and ME as the Slave. I tried swapping the order, but then the computer wouldn't boot.I posted over at Tom's Hardware and was told the MasterBootRecord didn't get set up properly because I installed XP when the drives were in Cable Select configuration and the only way to solve the issue would be to reset the drive jumpers to Master/Slave with XP as the Slave, and re-install the whole OS all over again, then return the drives to Cable Select.

Win 2000 Pro Boot.ini On Dos Partition Rather Than OS Partition

Jan 31, 2007

I reinstalled my OS several months ago, and decided that I might want a dual boot in the future. I already had an old, smaller drive in the machine that's labeled the c: drive.
Reading one time that for security purposes it's good to have your OS on a drive other than C:, I decided to not alter the drive lettering.

I then partitioned a new internal hard drive into several logical drives. I formatted the D: partition as a Dos fat32 partition and the rest as NFTS partitions. Somehow, I allowed the D: partition to be the primary partition, while the E: partition which contains the Win 2000 Pro OS Winnt directory is a logical drive.

When I just checked disk management, I noticed that not only is boot.ini on the D: Dos partition, but so is ntldr along with the following Dos setup files:

ndetect.com
arcsetup.exe
arcldr.exe

Removing Dual Boot Setup - Boot Partition

Dec 9, 2005

I have a system which was initially set up a while ago as a dual boot, Win98SE/Win2K. I had a need for the Win98SE side of things then, but now that has gone but the Win98SE partition is the boot of course.I want to be able to do away with the Win98SE partition completely and ideally add the space to the Win2K one, maybe leave it as a clean NTFS partition if that makes things easier. This would mean that I would end up with a drive with a single boot partition holding Win2K. This of course is not a trivial process as the drive letter of the boot partition will need to change. (I do want that drive letter change incidentally).
