System Restore In Multi-boot Environment?
Aug 7, 2007
how System Restore works in a multi-boot environment? (I am not concerned with Vista, but with WinXP only). If I have O/S A and B, and I perform a System Restore in O/S A, is there any possibility that O/S B will also get rolled back to the same date? In O/S A, should I allow System Restore to monitor the O/S B partition, or should I switch off System Restore on that drive?

Out of no where my computer ceases to be able to multi-task. For example. I am playing a game while listening to music. When I hold down a button in the game to walk the music becomes choppy. I have also noticed that when I am using one program something the CPU usage is usually 88-95% usage on the program which makes it impossible to do anything else while using the program. This all started happening about 2 days after I re-installed my OS.
Also system restore doesn't seem to work. It always says "System restore failed: nothing on your hard drive was changed." but I know that the restore point is different from what I have on my computer right now.

Recently I reinstalled the OS on my computer. It was shipped with Windows XP HE SP2, but I formatted and put Win98 onto the system. Needless to say, it froze up at the Windows splash screen. So, I uninstalled it and put XP back on. My question here is, is there any possible way to put Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP all on one hard drive, and it work? I know how to partition the hard drive accordingly for the deed, it's getting the computer to actually run 95, 98, and 3.1. I'm cheating fate here, since I know 3.1 probably won't run on my 32-bit structure system, but it's worth a try. My system is a Dell Dimension 4700 with 3.0 gHz CPU, 256 mb of RAM, and an nVidia 64 mb video card.

I have a friend, seriously - it's a friend not me, that had to do the windows genuine updgrade. She paid the $150 and instead of just plugging in the new product key she inserted the CD they mailed her and started a new install of windows. It seems it had trouble locating files and now she gets a option to select which operating system at start. The setup won't continue (it can't locate files on CD - maybe bad disk) and when she selects the original XP pro setup it won't let her past the login screen.

I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

i was trying to restore my backup of the partition with the windows xp system on it. Of course, everything went wrong and Norton Ghost 2003 had an error at about 95%. I thought i can just boot from the win xp cd and fix the problem... no way when i try to boot from the win xp cd, i get a black screen after checking my pc configuration, no driver loading etc.
when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdisk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: STOP: 0x0000007B(0xF8958640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)

The LCD screen during boot up has multi-colored static verticle lines 1/3rd of LCD My OS was re-installed on this past Monday. There were not any noted problems. Today I installed Norton SystemWorks Premier 2005 without ant noted problem. I then installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and during the installation it detected that a previous version of Norton AntiVirus was installed and requested that it be removed. I did that and followed the correct steps. And rebooted. I then installed Norton Internet Security with AntiVirus without any noted problem. I'm running XP SP3, Home version. I've tried F8 on boot, and that doesn't work. I've gone into msconfig, and curiously, there is no boot.ini tab. The closest thing it has is an option for "Diagnostic Startup." I'm assuming that's the same thing but want to take no chances. Is it the same thing? Any pitfalls to watch out for?
System restore. Here's the reason that I have to be so careful: I can't get system restore to work, regardless of the date I select. I'm wondering whether I can get system restore to work from safe mode (or is that the only way that it will work?). To be honest, I'm nervous about changing the msconfig to Diagnostic mode without system restore working, because I had a friend who changed his msconfig to Diagnostic and his pc wouldn't stop booting in that mode even when he changed msconfig back. Without system restore, he wouldn't have been able to undo the change in msconfig.

my pc (XP) will not boot or close up clean. The only way I can boot is using safe mode. Is there a better way to fix boot problems without doing a complete sys recovery? The instructions for complete sys recovery is pretty vague it seems to me.

I am running an HP Pavilion a1624n with Win XP Media Center 2005, running on a wireless network with one other desktop and one laptop. I also use Firefox browser and have NAV 2007. I have had this PC for about two months and the first time or two that I tried System Restore, it worked OK, Now, (with System Restore turned ON),it has gone downhill and when I try to run it, it goes through the process but at the end I get the error message "your computer cannot be restored to 00/00/00. No changes have been made." It does not make the automatic 24 hour restore points, even though it does make restore points when new programs are installed and manual restore points can be made. It works fine in Safe Mode using the rstrui.exe command. This latest problem started yesterday.

I have the Knoppix CD to boot into Linux, with full access to all my usual system devices, and files. Can System Restore be run from the Linux CD boot? I recognize that when "problems" do arise, that bootup using "last good configuration" will generally get the system to boot, and then of course, System Restore can be
called upon to go back in time. But if "last good configuration" did have some problems booting up, it would be nice to be able to use the Knoppix CD.

I have a compact laptop bought second hand but has problems.
1) Firstly when it is switched on it asks to choose between either windows 98 or windows 2000 pro (the one i want to use)
2) On loading up windows 2000 it works fine however when i try to use many options such as; volume control, disk cleanup, msconfig, majority of .exe files etc it says "access to file denied" or "cannot find the file "xxx". make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available" - this is despite the file it is looking for being the one I want to use.
3) On searching futher I noticed that in my computer along with the usual WINDOWS directory. I have 2 other operating system folders in their entirity. WindowsNT and Windows 98 - I think that having all systems on my computer must be reason for it not working
4) I have tried to uninstall windows 98 using its own uninstall program however get the message "cannont find "xxx" etc
5) I have a feeling the windowsNT is just cd contents and ahs not been setup properly and could therefore simply deleted but I ahve not done so just in case
6) If i begin the laptop ion windows 98 much more works, including sound etc, however the uninstall still does not.
7) Misc problem - I cannot install any more programs when running windows 2000.

My computer crashed about a month ago and I had to use a recovery disc to restore my original system.. Everything works fine except when I boot up and following the Sony logo and Intel logo the following message appears "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. Acronis fatal error Boot drive (partition) not found. Press Enter to try to boot your PC." Pressing enter boots up the PC fine but how can I eliminate the process? I had Acronis on both drives before the crash but it no longer exists.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but thanks to the many previous posts concerning my System Restore problems I did the scans, and tried all recommendations and got it working fine (I thought). But now, I find that every time I re-boot, or shut down at night and start up in the mornings, all of my restore points are lost and a new one is established at the time of my boot up.I have tried to right click on the file C:Windowsinfsr, and select install, but I am prompted for the XP Pro CD (I use XP Windows Media Edition 2005). I have an HP a1624 with a Recovery Partition and no CD, but I am working to get one from HP. Also, in the inf directory, there is also a sr.PNF (Precompiled Setup Information).

Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?

My comp has been experiencing several problems and is running poorly. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
