I tried this under the Security label, thinking Trojan or Malware, but have had no response, so I'm trying here. XP Home PC runs properly until it is connected to the Internet, and svchost.exe uses 98% of the CPU. The problem does not happen when Windows Update is switched off - but happens again when connected to the WWW and Windows Update is connected. Programs will load from Desktop icons but Taskbar freezes. I have run antivirus, anti adware, Windows Defender, nothing found. a lot about this on the Net but not simple enough for this wrinkly. Your help will be most welcome.
Windows automatic update started last night and restarted my computer. I let it restart but it came up with a screen saying that I cannot start my computer in its regular mode. It gave me the option of starting with Last Known Good Configuration, which brought me to the same place, or starting up in Safe Mode

I have a Dell Dimension E510 PC, Windows XP, only 2 years old. It was working just fine, and then at restart I got message windows cannot start, file system32/root/hal.dll missing or corrupt. I tried doing a windows recovery with installation cd, but it wouldn't even find the windows installation. So, I wanted to do a clean installation, the quick formatting says it cannot do it, the long formatting took hours and at the end said it cannot reformat due to corrupt or damaged hard drive. I tried again to restore, but aftercopying the files and checking the c: drive, it says it cannot create the folder windows/system32/ras and gets hung there. Now, when I reboot I get that that another file in windows is missing or corrupt. When it shows the partitions it shows d: as the one with the most space and c: as one with a lot less space. Does anyone know how to get my system back up, even if it deletes all of my previous files. Thank you very much for your time and effort. I'm really frustrated after trying to fix it for 2 days

After installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

I have never been good at understanding how to successfully run defragmentation. I know it's a good idea to do so on occasion so it keeps your computer in tip-top shape but in all the systems I've had in the past, Windows 95 and Windows 98, it just seemed like it never would complete. AND it took forever!
You'd see the percentage of it increasing and then all of a sudden, it started over. I'd have everything "closed" but I guess there were applications running in the background.
Just wondering. When I set BITS, Background Intelligent Transfer Service to automatic & started using services.msc, after a while, maybe days later, it goes back to manual & stopped. When I look at http://www.theeldergeek.com/background_intelligent_transfer_service.htm it seems to suggest that I could set it either way. Since I never seem to get windows update automatically, although I do get them manually, I just wanted to try this setting to see if it would work for me. . Running win xp pro, sp2, dell dimension 2350, 1 GB mem, 2.0 GHz, cable modem. Usually run daily auto scans with MSAB & AVG7. Also have AdawareSE, Spybot, Spyware Blaster.
About two days ago I noticed a windows registry program called dumprep 0 -k running in msconfig. After doing some googling I found out that its safe to disable and is simply a program associated with dumprep.exe which is used to send error info to MS. So I disabled it. Should I have done this? Oh and I decided to disable 'write debugging information' in 'Error Reporting'. Is this alright disabled too? I did this cause I dont report system errors to MS and so at least I think its not needed.
windows has started to give me weird problems lately. I cant see Folder Options neither in Tools-->?? nor in control panel. Can someone please shed some light in this regard in order to get this thing resolved.

Its been suggested that it might be a program seeking updates. I'm not sure where to look for the cause. Is there a process log that would help me identity what might be bring it out of stand-by at, seemingly, the same time every night?
My computer has started to tick lately. I clicked the fans in the back of the computer and ran all spyware everything OK.Sometimes a screen comes up saying physcial memory dump taking place, and then suggesting perhaps i've installed or uninstalled a program incorrectly.I don't know what else to do ...is my hard drive kicking the bucket?
The System Restore service does not work correctly in Windows XP.In Services, the System Restore service is listed as stopped. I recently formated and restored windows to how it was when I bought it. Everything was ok except for updating using the Windows Update feature. I have it on, but when I go to the updating windows its not doing anything. Its suposte to scan, but its not scanning since it takes forever. On my other computer, it works in seconds.
My computer has automatic update on it but it hasent been updateing lately so i went to windows update and found all the new updates for my computer and clicked "install New Updates" and it went to the download screen and said "Error Download Failure"
I would like to know how to uninstall an update that was performed by Windows Update. The update itself was in the "Hardware, Optional" Type list (ie. not the"High Priority"or the"Software,Optional" list)The update that was installed shows up in the History log correctly I believe that Microsoft incorrectly scanned the computer and assigned a hardware update that pertained to a different type of hardware ... specifically, the update pertained to an "IBM Thinkpad UltraNav Pointing Device" whereas the actual hardware is a Toshiba Satellite with a Synaptics Touchpad".
I have run live update and installed all updates OK except .NET Framework SP1.1 update. This will not install and there is no reason given why - it just says installation failed
Windows Update keeps trying to update Office 2003.I have a trial version of Office 2003 that came with my computer.I do not want it at this time, but I may want it at some point in the future.I don't know if it can be hidden from the Windows update but if not, I am not sure how to fully get rid of it. It has never been "installed."Windows update fails every time, of course, because it isn't now nor has it ever been installed. The biggest problem is that it keeps trying to apply the same updates over and over and over. It slows down the shutdown as it repeats the attempt(s) 3 times before each shutdown and also it keeps downloading the same and or other Windows Updates for Office 2003
I am using a Dell, Windows XP Professional laptop computer. It has a non- wireless connection to the internet via my LAN.Last week, the yellow update "shield" icon appeared in my systray and I updated Windows - the update was completed. Since then, the update shield icon has appeared in my systray four times. I installed the update each time, but it seems to have been the same update each time ("KB 967715"). If it is the same update each time, which it seems to be, why would the update "shield" appear in my systray four times within a week and a half to install the same update
My PC has recently started hanging during startup. It usually happens before the Windows XP logo appears. The startup process just stops, the screen stays black, the hard disk drive goes quiet and the activity light stays on (rather than the normal flickering). All I can do when this happens is hold down the power button until the power goes off. Also, when it does startup properly, after logging into XP it takes an unusually long time to load the settings, startup programs, etc and sometimes some of the normal system tray icons dont appear at all
I downloaded a wallpaper off of wincustomize.com, as I've done countless times in the past, and applied it to my desktop. A few moments later, several of my applications started to crash (Yahoo messenger, intellitype pro, intellipoint, etc.) and I get an error saying something about a module and that it's to protect something from being damaged by viruses. I panicked and closed everything and restarted. I checked eventviewer

I am having trouble starting my computer I turn it on and it automatically goes to the screen where it ask if i want to start it in safe mode. The first time i started it in normal mode, it started loading but than went black and reset itself. So i tried safe mode and the same thing happened. It does this for every option that i enter. Even in the extra safe modes when i press F8.It just keeps restarting itself.
My computer has been working fine. But all of a sudden my computer started hanging. Im sure it's not viruses or anything because I have ran many scans over and over.I have no clue what could be causing this. I've included my HJT log even though I've looked it over many a times and have found nothing.
