About two days ago I noticed a windows registry program called dumprep 0 -k running in msconfig. After doing some googling I found out that its safe to disable and is simply a program associated with dumprep.exe which is used to send error info to MS. So I disabled it. Should I have done this? Oh and I decided to disable 'write debugging information' in 'Error Reporting'. Is this alright disabled too? I did this cause I dont report system errors to MS and so at least I think its not needed.
I have a Dell Dimension E510 PC, Windows XP, only 2 years old. It was working just fine, and then at restart I got message windows cannot start, file system32/root/hal.dll missing or corrupt. I tried doing a windows recovery with installation cd, but it wouldn't even find the windows installation. So, I wanted to do a clean installation, the quick formatting says it cannot do it, the long formatting took hours and at the end said it cannot reformat due to corrupt or damaged hard drive. I tried again to restore, but aftercopying the files and checking the c: drive, it says it cannot create the folder windows/system32/ras and gets hung there. Now, when I reboot I get that that another file in windows is missing or corrupt. When it shows the partitions it shows d: as the one with the most space and c: as one with a lot less space. Does anyone know how to get my system back up, even if it deletes all of my previous files. Thank you very much for your time and effort. I'm really frustrated after trying to fix it for 2 days

I tried this under the Security label, thinking Trojan or Malware, but have had no response, so I'm trying here. XP Home PC runs properly until it is connected to the Internet, and svchost.exe uses 98% of the CPU. The problem does not happen when Windows Update is switched off - but happens again when connected to the WWW and Windows Update is connected. Programs will load from Desktop icons but Taskbar freezes. I have run antivirus, anti adware, Windows Defender, nothing found. a lot about this on the Net but not simple enough for this wrinkly. Your help will be most welcome.
I have never been good at understanding how to successfully run defragmentation. I know it's a good idea to do so on occasion so it keeps your computer in tip-top shape but in all the systems I've had in the past, Windows 95 and Windows 98, it just seemed like it never would complete. AND it took forever!
You'd see the percentage of it increasing and then all of a sudden, it started over. I'd have everything "closed" but I guess there were applications running in the background.
Just wondering. When I set BITS, Background Intelligent Transfer Service to automatic & started using services.msc, after a while, maybe days later, it goes back to manual & stopped. When I look at http://www.theeldergeek.com/background_intelligent_transfer_service.htm it seems to suggest that I could set it either way. Since I never seem to get windows update automatically, although I do get them manually, I just wanted to try this setting to see if it would work for me. . Running win xp pro, sp2, dell dimension 2350, 1 GB mem, 2.0 GHz, cable modem. Usually run daily auto scans with MSAB & AVG7. Also have AdawareSE, Spybot, Spyware Blaster.
windows has started to give me weird problems lately. I cant see Folder Options neither in Tools-->?? nor in control panel. Can someone please shed some light in this regard in order to get this thing resolved.
Got message Power surge on USB hub. Unplugged everything then plugged back in. Mouse (usb) and keyboard (PS/2) no longer work. When I try and power up PC nothing happens that is fans are working but no hard drive activity screen remains black. how I access PC or how can I recover whats on Hard drive?
Its been suggested that it might be a program seeking updates. I'm not sure where to look for the cause. Is there a process log that would help me identity what might be bring it out of stand-by at, seemingly, the same time every night?
My computer has started to tick lately. I clicked the fans in the back of the computer and ran all spyware everything OK.Sometimes a screen comes up saying physcial memory dump taking place, and then suggesting perhaps i've installed or uninstalled a program incorrectly.I don't know what else to do ...is my hard drive kicking the bucket?
The System Restore service does not work correctly in Windows XP.In Services, the System Restore service is listed as stopped. If you try to manually start the System Restore service, could not start system restore service service on local computer error 193: 0xc1.it advises to reboot and try again, but the same thing keeps happening each time.
I have a windows xp service pack 2.My computer is a gateway.I have a Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128 And a Avance Audio Controller They both state that their enabled but not started. how do i start it?
My PC has recently started hanging during startup. It usually happens before the Windows XP logo appears. The startup process just stops, the screen stays black, the hard disk drive goes quiet and the activity light stays on (rather than the normal flickering). All I can do when this happens is hold down the power button until the power goes off. Also, when it does startup properly, after logging into XP it takes an unusually long time to load the settings, startup programs, etc and sometimes some of the normal system tray icons dont appear at all
I downloaded a wallpaper off of wincustomize.com, as I've done countless times in the past, and applied it to my desktop. A few moments later, several of my applications started to crash (Yahoo messenger, intellitype pro, intellipoint, etc.) and I get an error saying something about a module and that it's to protect something from being damaged by viruses. I panicked and closed everything and restarted. I checked eventviewer
When I try to open outlook express I get this message Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact microsoft for further assistance. (0x800c012E, 5). Then when I click ok it says,
Outlook express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be started. Outlook express may not be installed correctly. I have enough disk and memory space. I reinstalled outlook express and then updated it and reinstalled it and its exactly the same. Also had problems with mailwasher.

I am having trouble starting my computer I turn it on and it automatically goes to the screen where it ask if i want to start it in safe mode. The first time i started it in normal mode, it started loading but than went black and reset itself. So i tried safe mode and the same thing happened. It does this for every option that i enter. Even in the extra safe modes when i press F8.It just keeps restarting itself.
My computer has been working fine. But all of a sudden my computer started hanging. Im sure it's not viruses or anything because I have ran many scans over and over.I have no clue what could be causing this. I've included my HJT log even though I've looked it over many a times and have found nothing.
Was going to try this. I downloaded all necessary downloads it then started installing downloads when it got to messenger I waited six hours and it still was installing; I have DSL/256 and this seemed to long
my system only has USB & a new USB2 device I recently bought automatically started to update the USB 2.0 system, now none of my input devices work in Windows XP.I've now read article 813139 & it says:"Note If you are using a USB keyboard and a mouse input device, Microsoft does not recommend that you update the USB 2.0 host controller driver by means of Device Manager. If you do this, the keyboard and mouse do not function, and you cannot control the system or safely restart the computer."
computer running XP is turning itself on at 1:00PM after being placed in hibernate. The scheduler had items for this time (which I am now changing). Isn't the computer completely OFF when hibernated? What mechanism does it have for turning itself on if the CPU supposedly is powered down?
I don't have an easy way of backing up all the data, as I can't move and copy files, and the largest USB key/SD card I have right now is 512MB. I can't directly move files, the way I've found to work around this problem is to put all the files I want in a zip file and then extract it into the location I want.
So she doesn't want to format if possible, and I would really like to know what caused this problem, although it seems like 1 problem that spawned into many, as if someone took control of the computer and started disabling things. Any ideas would very much be appreciated
In last few days Windows (XP Pro SP2) Explorer started to hang fo up to a minute or so when trying to open files. Have scanned for viruses (AVG), malware(Windows Defender), cleaned registry (CClean), defragmented hard drive, restored system to earlier point using both Windows system restore and HP Recovery Manager. HP support said only remaining solution is to reinstall Windows.
OK, several months ago I tried to upgrade my video drivers for an ATI Radeon board and after that every time windows booted, my screen would go black before windows started. The monitor saw a video signal but that was about it. If I put my old video card back in it would work fine. So I have been dealing with this for a couple of months and tonight I tried to tackle it again. I removed my old drivers, the old card drivers, everything I could think of. It still didn't work. So I stuck my old card back in and tried a few more things back and forth, and then I got the blue screen of death.
Recently installed a few software and removed other small things such as browsers and anti virus. At some point my desktop (XP-Pro) started to vanish periodically blinks and the cursor is lost from previous function. Any open folder closes and another thing the option to visualize the Show Hidden files does not work I re-installed the graphic card and respective drivers but did not fix the problem. I open the event viewer and check the periodically events and here they are: Application: EVENT_SHELL_RESTARTED System: The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service was successfully sent a start control.
Out of the blue tonite, my computer started crashing when I went to play GRAW2. I couldn't even get to the desktop to try and sort things out. Booted in safe mode and got an error message saying my system32 file was corrupted and suggested I do a repair with the XP Pro disk. I did that, started GRAW 2 again and got another crash. (see attached thumbnail) I haven't added or removed anything from this computer in months, and it is rock solid performer. What the heck happened between last night and tonite to make it go crazy like this?
Is it possible to start networking once I've entered Safe Mode without it? I am using Windows XP Pro. Maybe there is a command or something to start the service?
First i am using xp, nobody can help me, i called the pritner manufactor, microsoft, and my computer manufactorer. for some reason the spooler service is not running. i try to start and says the depenecy services cannot be started, and i clicked on properties and these one are listed: LexBce server, and remote procedure call. the printer is all in one, and shows up on device manager, and lets me scan, i just cant print, i used to have a lexmark, and im wondering did uninstall correctly and if that s why its giving me problems...also on top of that when i click on start and try to go to help and support it tells me it cannot find the file, same thing when i click on run and type msconfig, cannot find that either. i did a system restore, and it did nothing, i p aid emachines 20 dollars for their "support".....
After I installed Service Pack 2, on startup showed Security Center. It said "The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the security center again.
I launched services.msc, changed to automatic (it was disabled), and started it. After reboot everything went back to "normal" - it was disabled, stopped. I know I can do this procedure every time I want to work on my computer, but this is not what I want. I have Norton Internet Security 2007; no other anti-virus software or firewall installed.
I just purchased a new computer with XP Professional SP2. When I go to the Windows Security Center (start/control panel/Window Security Center) I get the following message under Security Essentials: "The Security Center is currently unavailable because the 'Security Center' service has not been started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the Security Center service) and the open the Security Center again." I have my Windows Firewall is ON along with Norton anti-virus and the Norton firewall.
