I just did a reinstall of my friends E-Machine and when I try to install the printer (hp PSC 2410 xi photosmart all in one) I get this message when I go to plug in the USB cable to the computer from the printer. In the task bar I get this message: "Power surge on hub port. A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port".
I have a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Windows XP Pro, Pentium 4,512MB of Ram,40G hard drive and an external 200GBHDD. A 250W power supply. The unit has 3 built-in USB 1.1 ports and I added a USB 2.0 PCI Card for the external. I presently have an USB hub port hooked up to one of the USB 1.1 ports, which leaves the other 2 free. On the USB hub port I have an old HPScanjet 3300 scanner, an Intel Webcam and my Sony Cybershot camera. On the USB 2.0 PCI Card I have only my maxtor 200GB external. I am recently getting a balloon red x alert in my system tray that reads "Power surge on hub port" (A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port)and what to do to solve the problem. When I click the message to solve the problem I see a question mark which I then highlight and hit reset.I follow the instructions to reset and it reappears.
I was on my computer yesterday when there was a power surge. My operating system is windows XP. Since this happened my computer won't restart properly, I get this message: NTLDR is missing press ctrl + alt + del to restart I have done some research to figure out.
Or at least I think so, there was a whopper of a lightning storm and then Windows wouldn't start up the next morning. I've been trying to trouble shoot and am at a standstill close to the answer.
It will start in safe mode I cannot restore it using the disc I disabled several things in device manager and that didn't help I tried the repair from disc as well, doesn't work I finally reformatted - still doesn't work.
I'm not sure how to explain this but I had left my computer on when I went out of town for awhile. When I got home the computer was in standby mode and I could not get out of it so I tried to reboot the computer. It would not turn on so I checked the fan on the power supply and noticed it wasn't working so I replaced the power supply and started the computer. When it was booting up all I got was a blinking light. So I shut it down and installed my hard drive (thinking that was the culprit) into another computer that the same hard drive use to be in and it wouldnt recognize it. I checked the jumpers and the cable and all was correct.
My computer was on and we had some bad thunder storms and lost power briefly. I now have a blue screen saying I have an "Unmountable Boot Error" and that I should reboot the computer in Safe Mode. When I try this I can get to a menu where I select Safe Mode but after that it takes me right back to the blue sreen with the "Unmountable Boot Error" message.I know I could probably use the restore CD but I'd rather not lose all the data on my computer.
My PC starts up fine, BIOS all OK. Then I get the message about Windows failing to load because of possible power surge or hardware problems or something, and a choice between loading Windows normally, loading the last known working setup, or the three variations on loading safe mode.
My neighborhood had a transformer blow and knocked out the power out within like 2 blocks and ironically im within that and when it happened my computer shut off and wouldnt turn back on anymore. (Prior to this happening every time i turned my computer on it gave me a windows message before loading saying something like "Alert, your power supply is low .. something something" im not sure if that has anything to do with it but yea..) now when i press my power button it flashes like its going to turn on but doesnt just stays off.
I had a power outage last night and when I turned the computer back on this morning, it says that error. "Disk Boot Failure - Insert system disk and press enter" I do not have a working CD drive in the computer so I hope that doesn't have anything to do with it.
I have a compaq armada 1500c laptop running win 2000. My computer was running fine on the battery, when it started to run down I plugged in my power cord, the computer turned off now it will not run at all on the battery, but it seems to charge the bat.
Desktop Manager allows you to switch between multiple desktops creating more elbow room for those who like to stay organized while pushing the max thread limit.1. First grab XP PowerToys from microsoft.com Once installed right click then check: task bar > toolbars > Desktop ManagerYou may now view up to four new desktops. I prefer not to have "Shared Desktops" on as it reminds me more of linux (and is cleaner). Now you may hide the buttons etc. and use Windows key + 1-4 to switch between desktops and Windows key + v to preview.
I'm running WinXP pro and have lost all the reguler power schemes from the power options propreties window. Also I'm unable to Save a new scheme.I beleive the schemes where deleted from the power properties window by right clicking and selecting delete. They used to be there anyway Unknown is listed above Turn off monitor-Turn off hard disks-System standby-System hibernates and everything is greyed out. They are still listed in the registry but with no value set.How do I go about getting the schemes back?
My PC has old configuration, the Max Power Supply can be only up to 350W. You know that every parts of the PC, either external or internal hardware will consume power. What I would like to know is that, what would happen to my PC if the total power consumption exceeds the MAXIMUM VALUE of the power supply unit.
I have a Dell Dimension E510 PC, Windows XP, only 2 years old. It was working just fine, and then at restart I got message windows cannot start, file system32/root/hal.dll missing or corrupt. I tried doing a windows recovery with installation cd, but it wouldn't even find the windows installation. So, I wanted to do a clean installation, the quick formatting says it cannot do it, the long formatting took hours and at the end said it cannot reformat due to corrupt or damaged hard drive. I tried again to restore, but aftercopying the files and checking the c: drive, it says it cannot create the folder windows/system32/ras and gets hung there. Now, when I reboot I get that that another file in windows is missing or corrupt. When it shows the partitions it shows d: as the one with the most space and c: as one with a lot less space. Does anyone know how to get my system back up, even if it deletes all of my previous files. Thank you very much for your time and effort. I'm really frustrated after trying to fix it for 2 days

I tried this under the Security label, thinking Trojan or Malware, but have had no response, so I'm trying here. XP Home PC runs properly until it is connected to the Internet, and svchost.exe uses 98% of the CPU. The problem does not happen when Windows Update is switched off - but happens again when connected to the WWW and Windows Update is connected. Programs will load from Desktop icons but Taskbar freezes. I have run antivirus, anti adware, Windows Defender, nothing found. a lot about this on the Net but not simple enough for this wrinkly. Your help will be most welcome.
I have never been good at understanding how to successfully run defragmentation. I know it's a good idea to do so on occasion so it keeps your computer in tip-top shape but in all the systems I've had in the past, Windows 95 and Windows 98, it just seemed like it never would complete. AND it took forever!
You'd see the percentage of it increasing and then all of a sudden, it started over. I'd have everything "closed" but I guess there were applications running in the background.
Just wondering. When I set BITS, Background Intelligent Transfer Service to automatic & started using services.msc, after a while, maybe days later, it goes back to manual & stopped. When I look at http://www.theeldergeek.com/background_intelligent_transfer_service.htm it seems to suggest that I could set it either way. Since I never seem to get windows update automatically, although I do get them manually, I just wanted to try this setting to see if it would work for me. . Running win xp pro, sp2, dell dimension 2350, 1 GB mem, 2.0 GHz, cable modem. Usually run daily auto scans with MSAB & AVG7. Also have AdawareSE, Spybot, Spyware Blaster.
About two days ago I noticed a windows registry program called dumprep 0 -k running in msconfig. After doing some googling I found out that its safe to disable and is simply a program associated with dumprep.exe which is used to send error info to MS. So I disabled it. Should I have done this? Oh and I decided to disable 'write debugging information' in 'Error Reporting'. Is this alright disabled too? I did this cause I dont report system errors to MS and so at least I think its not needed.
windows has started to give me weird problems lately. I cant see Folder Options neither in Tools-->?? nor in control panel. Can someone please shed some light in this regard in order to get this thing resolved.
Its been suggested that it might be a program seeking updates. I'm not sure where to look for the cause. Is there a process log that would help me identity what might be bring it out of stand-by at, seemingly, the same time every night?
My computer has started to tick lately. I clicked the fans in the back of the computer and ran all spyware everything OK.Sometimes a screen comes up saying physcial memory dump taking place, and then suggesting perhaps i've installed or uninstalled a program incorrectly.I don't know what else to do ...is my hard drive kicking the bucket?
The System Restore service does not work correctly in Windows XP.In Services, the System Restore service is listed as stopped. If you try to manually start the System Restore service, could not start system restore service service on local computer error 193: 0xc1.it advises to reboot and try again, but the same thing keeps happening each time.
I have a windows xp service pack 2.My computer is a gateway.I have a Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128 And a Avance Audio Controller They both state that their enabled but not started. how do i start it?
My PC has recently started hanging during startup. It usually happens before the Windows XP logo appears. The startup process just stops, the screen stays black, the hard disk drive goes quiet and the activity light stays on (rather than the normal flickering). All I can do when this happens is hold down the power button until the power goes off. Also, when it does startup properly, after logging into XP it takes an unusually long time to load the settings, startup programs, etc and sometimes some of the normal system tray icons dont appear at all
I downloaded a wallpaper off of wincustomize.com, as I've done countless times in the past, and applied it to my desktop. A few moments later, several of my applications started to crash (Yahoo messenger, intellitype pro, intellipoint, etc.) and I get an error saying something about a module and that it's to protect something from being damaged by viruses. I panicked and closed everything and restarted. I checked eventviewer
