Dynamic & Static IP Addresses
Jul 3, 2005I am running a home network with multiple Windows XP machines attached to the Internet with a Linksys router with the DHCP function turned on. Is it possible to have one of my machines use a static IP address instead of the one leased by the router. I know how to setup a static ip address, and I am using a number in the same subnet mask but I can't get access to the Internet.

Nov 16, 2007This problem pops up at my office every time we add new users. When we create a new account and proceed to log the new user in at an existing workstation, some workstations won't log the new user in. We get the error that the user can't login because their profile is not found. We have a handful of machines that will complete the new login, create the new profile directory and thereafter the user can login anywhere. Again it's only some workstations. All of the computers run XP Pro, the server is a Win2k3 running Active Directory. We've unjoined and rejoined to the domain.

The users on the workstations have all been Local Admins on their workstations for a while, and now I want to revoke that and make them regular users. The goal is no installation of unauthorized software, including unintended installs of malware.Problem - ActiveX on websites is simply not working. I can't figure out which GPOs to set to allow ActiveX to install/run for specific content/sites. Is there a way to use Group Policies to allow ActiveX content to run on Trusted Sites? I see tons of settings in GP, but none seem to work.

Nov 2, 2006A while back before I knew better I gave a client of mine an active directory domain that ended in .org and did not exist on the internet at the time. Now, I'm discovering in the DNS event log at regular intervals errors about how the computers in the internal domain are unable to register in the DNS server of the web domain of the same name. So, my question is whether there is something I can do to change the Active Directory domain so that I don't get those errors anymore.
They're running Windows 2003 server standard with Active Directory, roaming profiles, routing and remote access for VPN, DHCP server, standard fileserver, and print server. I may have missed one or two things but likely I haven't. The server has itself as the primary DNS server though it's not the 127 address it's the actual IP. The secondary server is the router but I have the DHCP giving out the servers for opendns.com as options 3 and 4 after the Domain Controller and the router but I had the problem before adding the opendns.com entries.

Mar 28, 2005I have an HP a305w Pavilion. It's a refurbished system from a very reputable source and has caused me no problems over 2 years. I do have problems with the CD ROM tho. 1) When playing a music CD, the first 5-6 seconds is very static-y and muffled sounding. It doesn't matter if it's a bought CD or one I burned myself. 2) There is good 15 second delay between songs, and I can hear the CD ROM 'starting up' again. How can I fix both of these issues?

Mar 9, 2006I have some difficulty when trying to access some computers on the network ( I have administrator privileges).
For example I can connect to the C drive on computer LRC-Q11 by clicking start -----> Run - typing \LRC-Q11c$ and pressing OK.
However when tring to access another computer even with a similar name eg LRC-Q012 I receive the message :
"LRC-Q012 is unavailable . You may not have sufficient rights to access this resource. LRC-Q012 path cannot be found"
Identical results are obtained using network neighbourhood.
I cannot understand this.
Suggestions please ?
Connection Between 2 Stand-alone Workstations
Sep 19, 2005I have 2 IBM Intellistation workstations that are cross-over cable connected. Running XP Pro. I am admin on both machines. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why I cannot access either machine from each. I have run the network setup wizard at least a dozen times, checked the protocols, etc.I have Norton Firewall disabled on both machines since they are dial-up only. I enable before dialing the outside world.I can see both machines under the same workgroup name, but when I select the 2nd machine, I get a popup login window, with the USERNAME set to guest (which is greyed out) and a blinking password option. If I go to the other machine and attempt the same process, the same result occurs. GUEST login is already disabled under User Profiles so I assume that is why the userid (as guest) is already greyed. There are only three login options, Admin, Myself (with admin priv) and my co-worker (power user).Where do I go to check network access settings? I need to share both computers in order to transfer data back and forth.

Sep 20, 2007I keep hearing a static/popping sound from my speakers.I used my headphones and I still hear it so I don't think it's the speakers. If I put a movie on the pc I can hear it but, the static/popping sound is louder. I unistalled and re-installed the audio software (Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit) multiple times along with restarting the pc and it still comes back.I have 5.1 surround sound. Dell Dimension 5100.I opened my pc to look at the hardware and I don't see any problems.

Mar 27, 2007I have a strange issue in that I cannot connect to remote port 25 from windows xp workstations. Some workstations are ok, and this works, some are not. All these workstations are in a windows 2003 domain and all are xp sp2. I've seen this before but not found a solution. All the workstations here have their firewalls enabled with the same configuration via GPO. So all I can think of is that microsoft's crippled tcp/ip stack is responsible for this in some lame attempt to reduce spam or something, but we need this as it stops some legitimate processes from running (for example command line utils and python programs that need to send notification emails.

It did have a file extension at first, though I tried changing it to several others while trying to open it, and through the process, the original file extension has been lost. Since then, I have just deleted the file name altogether. I have tried several programs in an attempt to identify the file, though none of them worked. The programs I have tried are File Analyzer, TrIDNet, DaubNET: Identify! None of them could identify the file. All of my emails and contacts are in this file, and I really need them.

May 16, 2005I recently was infected with a computer virus. Norton AntiVirus 2003 initially caught the virus and it supposedly deleted it, so I was not concerned with the message details. However, almost immediately after receiving the message I realized the virus was not completely removed. A DOS window popped up two or three times and then Norton shutdown. I tried opening Norton again but it would not open. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it would not reinstall. I tried the Windows Update site and the page shows no conent. Any ideas on how to identify the virus so I can take steps to remove it?
