Bought 320 Gig HD WDC and installed properly, but it does not recognize the larger hard drive. Need to know what is to be done to upgrade the XP Pro SP2 with necessary driver to recognize the HD.
im thinking of buying a 120gb hard drive, i know how to setup inside my comp but i know for sure that it cant be that easy, is there some trick to get the files off the old drive to put into new, or cant there be a second hard drive!? ive heard stories about that but i dont know how to do,
I have an older PII running XP home, with (2) 10 gig hard drives. Both are full, and I want to upgrade to a larger drive that I can install as a backup drive in a future computer. The drive I'm looking at is a Seagate 250 Gig ATA-100 IDE.However, my hard drive controller says it supports "Ultra-33".So,
1)Will the 120 gig drive work ( I assume i'll need to partition it)
2)If so, could someone please walk me through the steps to get the new drive going, what I want to do is migrate Everything from both drives to this one big one.
I assume I'll set it up slave, load XP onto it, then set it up as a master, then just copy the files?
The C drive is used strictly for WinXP OS and applications, of which there are many and they are all very large. While I'm fully expecting this to be a tedious task, I would welcome any advice on how the process can be made less tedious and very safe. Note that the C drive is an 18 GB SCSI-3 supported by an Adaptec U-160 SCSI adapter, which has performed reliably and is very speedy.
I have a bad hard drive. I bought a new one and was in the process of re-loading Windows XP onto the new drive. I bought the computer with Windows ME on it and paid for the XP Upgrade. The only CDs I have are the XP Upgrade CD and the Comqaq "Recovery CD".The XP Load is requesting that I put in the old Windows ME CD to verify that I can load the Windows XP Upgrade OS, but I don't have the CD.
I have a Compaq SR-1200NX system that came with a 40gb drive. It was too small for all my music and apps so I installed a second drive which I then started using for files. So Drive 1 was 40 gb and Drive 2 was 80GB..I was running out of space again so I used a drive cloner to move the 40 GB drive to a 200GB Drive.Disk Management shows different according to it Drive 0 is the 80gb drive and is assigned a letter of D and Drive 1 is the 200GB drive assigned a letter of C.Both C and D have a Windows directory off of and a Program Files but the Program Files on C has more entries than the one on D.
I have a 'new' HP with XP Home on it... I also have a Full upgrade to XP Pro disk from my Dead Computer... I want to 'Upgrade' from Home to Pro; but, I am very nervous is there anything to watch out for? (I don't want to lose anything) - HP Tech Support says it IS possible -yet, after some of their other, not so hot answers, I am very nervous about this... (mainly I don't want to lose the stuff on the Hard Drive (Programs/Files) -they give no CDs. Thought - Comments - To Watch out for?
I am upgrading the hard drive for my pavilion ze5400 laptop the original has a smart error and at on point stopped working alltogether though is decent at the moment. The original drive is an ata-100 30gb, The replacement is a western digital scorpio blue 250 gb at first i was getting an error trying to load xp saying STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error SystemRootSystem32 tdll.dll, I eventually tried a duplicate xp bootable setup cd and it worked fine up to the partition stage. I made two partitions and formatted them. When I got back to check the status on the second the computer was just black. Now when I boot off the xp cd I just see black and if I don't load and just let the comp try to start up it says ntldr not present (or something close to that) press ctrl alt del to restart.
I had been chatting with the sales rep. in Dell but this is what they want me to purchase [Western Digital 500GB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive 8MB 5400RPM 2.5IN Scorpio Blue ] is everyone could help me find a internal hard drive with capacity of "160-500gb" that is compatible with my Inspiron 6000 notebook? and does my notebook support SATA?
I have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
I got a WD "My Book Essential" 160gb external drive for Christmas, and as it does not come with backup software, I decided to try the Windows backup utility. I had to reformat the new drive from FAT32 into NTFS, and then I did a complete backup of the entire system. It asked for a diskette to create a boot disk, and then completed fine. However, when I looked at the .bkf file to see how large it was, it was 46 gb!! My hard drive on my pc that I backed up only shows 32 gb used. How could the backup file be larger than what was backed up? Is there some option/feature that I need to change?
when i click on start > all programs there are 2 icons that read DESKTOP that are exactly the same but just one is larger then the other. When i click on them they give out some kind of path :S or a code. this first one [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21786 the second one [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21782 [LocalizedFileNames] Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:WINDOWSinfunregmp2.exe,-4 Remote Assistance.lnk=@%systemroot%system32 cbdyctl.dll,-152Internet Explorer.lnk=@xpsp1res.dll,-11001 Outlook Express.lnk=@xpsp1res.dll,-11004
I am having some problems with my brother's computer, which used to be a emachine w888 and lucky for us had never had problems with it till the motherboard before it recently was fried! So my mom and I decided to upgrade his entire computer and the only part that is actually part of the WHOLE emachine is the hard drive put into the new tower. So we got in the new barebone system and the mobo in it is a K7MNF-64 with an AMD XP Thoruoghbred 2800+ *even though the reciept says different for our motherboard*. Anyways the computer is running Win XP Home SP2 and whatever is on our emachine restore CD. Well we turned it on and the computer automatically tells us to select the computer to start normally or boot in safemode with or without netowrking. Well any selction we choose after the computer just reboots.
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
I keep getting this message when I try to run a program that I really want to run. I know I can do something to change the memory but I don't even know what mb is and when I look at the paging area there are much larger numbers.
When viewing folders larger than even just a few MB, it can takes minutes to load and even take forever to select an item and scroll through the folder.
current HD going bad, have second HD installed and using as back but now i need to make the second HD my primary, can i do this without having to reformat in order to add booting files.
using XP. am having wild swings in my hard drive space go from 46.1 to 44.1 and sometimes in between. have not installed any new programs recently. what could be causing it and how do i correct also am noticing my laptop as slowed appreciablydo know whether the two problems are correlated
i have a Compaq nx 7400 .i was hahving a lot of problems with the computer so i decided to put a new hard drive in and reinstall XP . well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
I receive the following message in Device Manager under the floppy drive: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39). I have attempted to remove the drive and let XP recognize it and I have also tried uninstall and install of the driver both without success. I found similar hits to my problem through a google search and one had a solution for a CD rom drive problem from this forum.
I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.
I recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
I recently installed Xilinx ISE 6.3i (a software to program digital design circuits)After the installation I found out that every time I plug in my USB Flash Drive, the system does not recognize it. I spotted the reason was this program. In one of the step of installation, this option appears:"Platform Cable USB Driver (IMPORTANT: OS support info bellow)The Platform Cable USB utilizes driver technology that requires Win2000 SP4 or greater or WinXP SP1 or greater. You may install this driver now if you do not have the proper version, but the cable will not work properly until you upgrade your OS version."
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? Thanks in advance and I apoligize if this is a rudimentary question as this is my first time attempting something like this.
I can not access hard disk properties because Windows Explorer hangs whenever I Right click on a hard drive icon. I am running WXP pro SP2 completely up to date with updates.
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard disks or hard drive controllers.Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site
