Mar 23, 2005
I have a 'new' HP with XP Home on it... I also have a Full upgrade to XP Pro disk from my Dead Computer... I want to 'Upgrade' from Home to Pro; but, I am very nervous is there anything to watch out for? (I don't want to lose anything) - HP Tech Support says it IS possible -yet, after some of their other, not so hot answers, I am very nervous about this... (mainly I don't want to lose the stuff on the Hard Drive (Programs/Files) -they give no CDs. Thought - Comments - To Watch out for?

In the past week I have noticed that every time I start my system I am losing a .5 GB of space on my hard drive. I use Norton for virus protection. I have done a chkdsk with no avail. Scans show no worms, virus or any other problem.I have gone from 65 GB to 55 GB in two days.

I have an older PII running XP home, with (2) 10 gig hard drives. Both are full, and I want to upgrade to a larger drive that I can install as a backup drive in a future computer. The drive I'm looking at is a Seagate 250 Gig ATA-100 IDE.However, my hard drive controller says it supports "Ultra-33".So,
1)Will the 120 gig drive work ( I assume i'll need to partition it)
2)If so, could someone please walk me through the steps to get the new drive going, what I want to do is migrate Everything from both drives to this one big one.
I assume I'll set it up slave, load XP onto it, then set it up as a master, then just copy the files?

I have a bad hard drive. I bought a new one and was in the process of re-loading Windows XP onto the new drive. I bought the computer with Windows ME on it and paid for the XP Upgrade. The only CDs I have are the XP Upgrade CD and the Comqaq "Recovery CD".The XP Load is requesting that I put in the old Windows ME CD to verify that I can load the Windows XP Upgrade OS, but I don't have the CD.

I have a Compaq SR-1200NX system that came with a 40gb drive. It was too small for all my music and apps so I installed a second drive which I then started using for files. So Drive 1 was 40 gb and Drive 2 was 80GB..I was running out of space again so I used a drive cloner to move the 40 GB drive to a 200GB Drive.Disk Management shows different according to it Drive 0 is the 80gb drive and is assigned a letter of D and Drive 1 is the 200GB drive assigned a letter of C.Both C and D have a Windows directory off of and a Program Files but the Program Files on C has more entries than the one on D.

I am upgrading the hard drive for my pavilion ze5400 laptop the original has a smart error and at on point stopped working alltogether though is decent at the moment. The original drive is an ata-100 30gb, The replacement is a western digital scorpio blue 250 gb at first i was getting an error trying to load xp saying STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error SystemRootSystem32 tdll.dll, I eventually tried a duplicate xp bootable setup cd and it worked fine up to the partition stage. I made two partitions and formatted them. When I got back to check the status on the second the computer was just black. Now when I boot off the xp cd I just see black and if I don't load and just let the comp try to start up it says ntldr not present (or something close to that) press ctrl alt del to restart.

My computer told me that my hal.dll file was missing or corrupt, so someone from this wonderful website directed me to an article that told me how to re-set the startup to the cd rom drive. After that I was able to start re-loading xp from the cd that came with the computer. The problem now, is that halfway through, my computer said that drive c has to be reformatted, and in order to do that, all files on the c drive will be deleted. Is there any way around this? I don't have access to the start button or anything else, so I don't know how to back up whatever is on my hard drive before I reformat the drive to finish installing xp!

Due to several fundamental errors in my Windows installation, today I decided to make a repair install of my Windows XP Home installation. I booted into my Windows disc, did all the normal stuff, and it seemed to go fine. At the end of the text-based stuff, it gave me the instruction to reboot, having moved the files it needed to the HDD, I believe. Anyway, the jist is that the text-based stuff seemed to go fine, I rebooted as instructed, and then did NOT click to boot from the CD (which, I believe, was the right choice). I let Windows load normally but... no GUI based stuff came up to finish off the repair installation, and consequently, what I've done seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

I have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

It's not the biggest problem in the world but all of the games provided by windows have just disappeared. Literally I logged on, went to play spider solitaire and it wasn't there! And I haven't done anything to it. If anyone knows of a way of getting them back that would be helpful. And also Windows deleted the flash player device, just randomly. And I've downloaded it again but it still doesn't work.

I have an interesting upgrade dilemma.I had a PC at home with Windows 98. I legally bought in a store a Windows XP Pro SP1 upgrade disk 3 years ago to upgrade it. I eventually had Microsoft send me the free CD that upgrades to SP2.After 4 years, my PC completely died, motherboard failure. Being on a budget, I bought a PC with XP Home SP2 on it. I wanted to use my XP Pro disk to upgrade it (I would call Microsoft and explain the old PC was trashed, etc. to "reactivate"). But it says that I can't upgrade because the disk is an "older version", I presume because of the SP1 vs. SP2 issue. Is there any way I can do it with the disks I have?

No more M.E.Im researching gathering info before i install. The new hard drive wont have any previous partition or format on it. Will i still be able to run "setup windows xp" from the disk ? & patition/format from there.I plan to use the NTFS format. The new hard drive is 120gb twice as much as i need. Im thinking to create two 60gb partitions. Any suggestions on partioning & what to do with the second partiton ? Maybe a bootable ghost copy.I have read suggestions about unplugging hardware devices prior to O.S. install. Like internet, printer, sound card, & video. In doing so the O.S. has a better chance for successful install. Any thoughts on that ? Hopefully it will come together smoothly. I have had some rough ones in the past.

In fact, they don't speciy what update options you have with this upgrade pakage (Form - To). I have e-mailed them asking if this upgrade will work for me. But, as yet, they haven't replied to my query. Will this this upgrade work for me?

I've been an XP Home SP1 user for quite a while now. I've been hesitant to upgrade to SP2, because I've heard that some common software does not work properly on SP2. Is there any truth to this? Should I stop worrying and just upgrade? Note that my typical usage includes Eudora email, Mozilla web browser,MS Office Pro 2003, some rudementary Eclipse/Java and Visual C++ programming, Norton AV 2005, and Adaware. Also of note is that I am about to change my Internet service from dial-up to DSL, so perhaps there are some firewall considerations.

I just upgrade my xp home service pack 1 to professional service pack 2 using the upgrade option.now that I've upgraded, there are several things wrong with my system that I can't seem to fix:
1. Sometimes during shutdown windows hangs at the "saving your settings" dialog, I have to push the power button to have it power off.
2. Right clicking any files (on the desktop, in explorer, and even shortcuts in the start menu) will cause the system to lock up. I have to end task explorer.exe and restart it to get windows back. Special right click menus display without any problems (ie: my computer, recycle bin, desktop, start button)
3. Going into control panel > network connections will lock up the windows.
4. going into internet options > connections locks up just the internet options window.
I've tried uninstalling as many programs I don't need. A reformat is my LAST resort.

I have recently discovered that the version of XP-pro that I have is not "completely Legit". It appears that the person which I inherited the PC( amd 1.3gig 256ram 40gig hd ) from, installed a purchased beta version of XP pro sp-2............ The problem is that one of the recent auto up dates, self installes and restarts my machine overnight, unfortunately when I attempt to log on I get "" logon message: The system cannot log you on due to the following error:the program issued a command but the command length is incorrect . please try again or consult your system administrator. " the only way that I can can log on is to try to log on ,is in safe mode and use the last working configuration. moreover it appears this version has about 30-45 more working days of life left. Given all of the above I want to upgrade to a version of xp-home and not lose any of my programs, settings emails etc.

I successfully upgraded my Gateway from ME to XP Home editions the service paks, except there is a problem with my audio. The audio is scratchy and barely audible when I startup. When I "uncheck" the box "1 speaker digital" in the volume control menu, the sound is works fine not loud enough but ok. The problem is that when I shut down or researt the computer, that checkbox defaults with a check mark and next startup. Gateway says there is a conflict with the sound card and the hard drive and suggested that I download a driver I ALREADY had on there.I have been on the phone for almost one week with Microsoft, and they cannot seem to fix the problem either.
