Updating Home With SP1 To SP2

Dec 29, 2006

Will be building a new system down the road and was going to use XP for the OS. I found a place online that has the retail version of XP Home with Service Pack 1 for $141.My question is, can I take a recent SP2 disc from Microsoft and use it to update the above to SP2? If so, it would save me about $38 vs buying the retail version of XP Home with SP2 already on it from the same place.

Updating From Home To Pro / Blue Screen Error

Aug 15, 2007

anyone that knows what I can do to fix this problem would help me out alot. I am trying to upgrade my dads computer from XP Home which he has to XP Pro which I brought for him. I go thru all the options to upgrade and the computer restarts and goes to bluescreen and gives me this message."Setup cannot find a cd-rom drive. make sure your cd-rom is on and properly connected to your computer. if it is a SCSI cd-rom drive make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. see your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more info. setup cannot continue, to quit setup press F3"..I tried setting the DVD Drives to Boot first in BIOS and that did not work, I even tried removing the BIOS Battery for a little to reset BIOS and that just made my speakers work bad for some reason, now they are raspy. I just cant figure this one out, luckaly there are people out there that can teach me,

Home Updating - Unable To Be Successfully Installed

Apr 9, 2005

I am having problems updating windows xp. After clicking on the selected updates to download (only the critical ones), the updates start to download, but then a notice that says the updates were "unable to be successfully installed". There is no reason for this given and no other error message. This happened to me in Feb. and I was able to google the error message Windows update gave me. The solution involved going into DOS & clearing something, but I can't remember what it was or where I found the instructions to do it.

Updating Sp1 With Sp2

May 11, 2005

I updated my xp home edition with sp2 but upon doing it, i lost my windows media player with all my songs in their specific folders .and lost my soundcard settings, it showed as zero modem.so i did a recovery back to how i had my system and the media player and the speaker icon which shows my settings are back. I checked in control panel to see if i could find the settings i had before (Creative SB live), but it didn't give me the options of soundblaster, just showed "zero modem" ,in other words my sound card seemed to be disabled/lost. I then clicked on my windows media icon, and it would direct me to get the newest version which i did, but then it would not play "anything". My sister has almost the same system and she upgraded without losing anything, why am i losing my windows media and speaker icon on my notification area. im fairly computer savvy, but this has me stumped.

Cannot Adjust Screen Resolution After Updating To SP2

Apr 12, 2008

I updated Windows XP to Service Pack 2 yesterday. After installing and re-booting, the screen resolution and the colours of my monitor have changed (big icons and only four colours), which makes it look like it was in Safe Mode (which it isn't).I have tried to change the screen resolution and the colours under Display properties - Settings, but it only gives me the option of a screen resolution of "640x480 pixels" (the slider won't move) and colour quality of "Lowest 4 bit".I presumed it was a driver issue so I have tried to uninstall the graphics controller in the device manager and re-install it with the latest driver.

Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x80242006 then says: Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources. I've opened up a support request but none of their suggestions were working (install 1 at the time, etc). I went out of town, returned and they'd closed the request.

Importance Of Updating Service Packs For Computer?

Mar 23, 2005

ok in my opinion service pack 2 released by microsoft corp (c) is a piece of s**t. It consumes resources and might be impairing my download speeds. It adds a nice security feature that seems quite useless since my router has a built in firewall. Sp1 is what i would use. Im thinking of switching back but i dont know if i should. Any other opinions?i know the difference in sp1 and sp1a is that microsoft VM is not included in sp1a but what do i really need it for? right now im doing some programming in java. do i still need microsoft vm?

Getting Reminder For Updating Norton Antivirus After 20 Seconds?

Jun 24, 2005

Me and my friend were trying to set up our laptop so that it could play some mpeg file I made to memorialize someone. It had Windows Media Player, so all was fine, and there were some issues regarding settingit up to play in a digital projector. But every 20 seconds, an urgent reminder kept appearing about how I need to update my Norton Antivirus file. Every 20 seconds! Because of that, there was a chance that would appear every 20 seconds during the presentation, so uninstalled the Norton Antivirus software. After all, my friend did not purchase this or even download it for free- it came with the Compaq.

Updating BIOS With Award Flash Tools

Apr 10, 2006

Since WinXP doesn't run on the MS-DOS kernel, what is the proper procedure for updating my BIOS with the Award FLASH tool? Can it be run from the command prompt while Win is running? My MBoard is a SOYO SY-K7VMP2 and lately an automatic reboot began coming up occasionally in the middle of various scans (such as security checkups, registry cleanings, and defrags), in addition to a few long downloads. I'm almost guessing that this might be the result of something like an outdated driver or BIOS. Something even caused a type of defect in my RAM in which only 1 of the two 1GB chips (less than a year old) is detected and identified, and the system will only run while just one of the chips is in its slot.
