Importance Of Updating Service Packs For Computer?
Mar 23, 2005
ok in my opinion service pack 2 released by microsoft corp (c) is a piece of s**t. It consumes resources and might be impairing my download speeds. It adds a nice security feature that seems quite useless since my router has a built in firewall. Sp1 is what i would use. Im thinking of switching back but i dont know if i should. Any other opinions?i know the difference in sp1 and sp1a is that microsoft VM is not included in sp1a but what do i really need it for? right now im doing some programming in java. do i still need microsoft vm?
I'm running win xp and the little shield tells me that sp3 is available for download. Is it necessary? I've been reading this forum and some people have had issues with it. Also, it appears that sp3 will be the last for win xp.
I've had ongoing problems with my 13-day old Gateway with Windows XP, seemingly due to all the updating and reconfiguring it took to get XP to work with older applications and my printer. I've received several service host error report messages, several days ago the sound stopped for no reason (uninstalling Realtek fixed that), and yesterday my backup program stopped working and my colors changed. The desktop turned from teal to yellowish green and the text changed from white to yellowish. A Gateway tech had me do "Big Fix" and nothing changed. He said I have to do a System Restore to get XP back to its original state. Tomorrow is the last day I can return my computer to the store where I bought it. What would cause colors to change by themselves?
When i try to update to service pack 2 I get an error that says Access denied and then stops the update. I used the windows knowledge base for help http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148 I do what they say but I get to the point Where i reset the permission for Hkey_classes_rootDxDiagprovider But it gives me an error "You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for DxDiag.DxDiagprovider, but you can make permission changes." After that it comes to the permission editor but i am unable to make changes
two questions--what's in SP3, and is it essential? Given Microsoft's track record, I'm reluctant to install SP3, so two questions: 1) what's in it? 2) does it contain anything essential?
when windows was updating my computer about half way threw i got a message access denied and that service pack 2 did not finish installing and it uninstall what it had already installed
I was updating a video driver, then restarted my computer. It takes a LONG time to boot up, then flashes an error message on the screen for a second, then restarts. I've tried holding down F8 to startup in safe mode, but it doesn't respond. Also, even when I have the win xp CD in while rebooting to try to repair the OS (yes, the CD drive is the 1st boot device), it won't recognize the CD either. I'm in a heap of trouble without my computer;
What should the values be for the security zones in the Registry. Like 1004, (the one that gets changed all the time by something) and any other important ones.Or is there a specific site that gives the values?
im just wondering if this is something that every PC/gaming PC needs or is it just something that only benifits a certain type of graphics program? The main question is will NET. Framework benifit my gaming?
the WIN-XP installed is all in "Spanish". Is there a Language Package "Downloadable" from microsoft or any other source available and how do I download same?
"OEM system builder software packs are intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY. They are not intended for distribution to end users. Unless the end user is actually assembling his/her own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well." From reading the above provided by another mvp. This only applies to packs.

I have installed (successfully, I thought) Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but apparently not. My computer (Dell laptop) was first incredibly slow, then would not launch IE, and now will not even boot up. It never gets past the blue "Welcome" screen.
trying to figure out my "new" (used) computer. the sticker on the tower says "windows 2000 professsional 1-2 cpu". but right click on "my computer", then properties, and it says "microsoft windows 5.00.2195 service pack 4".if i have windows 2000 pro or just plain windows 2000?
Computer started freezing up while e-mail but when i am doing other things also. I thought maybe it was a driver for the graphics card but I got the newest driver and it still does it. Can anyone give me some hints as far as what I could try or check or anything?
I have windows xp and just downloaded service pack 2.Before this I ran with only 32 - 35 processes. After downloading I starting running 48 -51 processes and making my computer very slow.
Ive followed many forums and none of them have my problem. ive fixed so much, except the last major one.. its just one more thing till i have the theme back. It was along! time ago.. my theme stuffed up after installing StyleXP. i didnt think much of it and i should of system restored it except i didnt. if i do this. Start > Run > services.msc > then scroll down to themes. its on "Automatic" but the service isnt running, its stopped, if i try to start the service it comes up with this error: "Could not start the Theme service on Local Computer. Error 126: The Specified Module Could not be Found."
I have read numerous articles pertaining to problems encountered after downloading SP4. If a computer is going to be used for home use only without multiple users, and only a printer, scanner and a DSL connection, should SP4 be installed? Are there any major benefits (or drawbacks) having SP4 installed? What is the best service pack to have installed for a home use computer?
I have had Windows XP on my computer for 3 years, during that time I have had no problems with updates. A couple of days ago updates were running when I got the following message box. Service pack 3 setup. Access denied1! Microsoft will now un-install the current updates. At this point I was in a hurry to leave and shut off my computer thinking that when I started up again, the updates would resume their activity.......
I updated my xp home edition with sp2 but upon doing it, i lost my windows media player with all my songs in their specific folders .and lost my soundcard settings, it showed as zero modem.so i did a recovery back to how i had my system and the media player and the speaker icon which shows my settings are back. I checked in control panel to see if i could find the settings i had before (Creative SB live), but it didn't give me the options of soundblaster, just showed "zero modem" ,in other words my sound card seemed to be disabled/lost. I then clicked on my windows media icon, and it would direct me to get the newest version which i did, but then it would not play "anything". My sister has almost the same system and she upgraded without losing anything, why am i losing my windows media and speaker icon on my notification area. im fairly computer savvy, but this has me stumped.
I am about to download and install XP Service Pack 2. When I attempted to do this when SP2 first came out, my computer slowed almost to a standstill and I uninstalled it.
My computer is Toshiba Satellite A215, with Windows XP home edition. I had Service Pack 2, but about a week ago, I updated to Service Pack 3. After installing Service Pack 3, the whole computer slowed down and started acting weird. The speaker started to make noise, it started to show error messages often, the internet does not work smoothly, spyware & virus search take 10 hour or more and never finish (it used to take only a few hours), etc.
So, I wanted to put the Service Pack 2 back to my computer. I tried uninstalling SP 3. But it failed uninstalling and I got a message says something like "couldn't uninstall SP3". I thought it might let me uninstall if I restart the computer and I tried to restart, and it never start again. This blue screen with a message, something like "autochk program not found-autochk skipped" comes up and then it goes back to the Windows LOGO screen and keeps doing the same thing. I read about some similar problems, and tried a few things, like starting with safe mode or last setting that worked, etc, but they do not seem to work....
I'm sure this is an old issue for some but it's new to me because I downloaded Service Pact 2 this weekend. I'm now noticing that sometimes when my computer comes out of stand by the local area connection symbol is disabled and I can't get it to enable. I've even gone into My Computer/ Network Connections/ Local Area Connection Properties window and tried to enable it but that won't work. I also tried to troubleshoot it, but that hung up, not even ctrl alt delete would shut it down so I pulled the plug. Can anyone tell me what's going on? I don't think it's a coincidence that it started after I got SP 2. I'm tempted to try and unistall it, but I've already seen some posts on the forum about possible negative consequences.
Will be building a new system down the road and was going to use XP for the OS. I found a place online that has the retail version of XP Home with Service Pack 1 for $141.My question is, can I take a recent SP2 disc from Microsoft and use it to update the above to SP2? If so, it would save me about $38 vs buying the retail version of XP Home with SP2 already on it from the same place.
I just recently bought a laptop and i'm trying to update it to SP2 but i always get this error Error Code: FFFFFC06 so it stop there and do nothing else.
I believe that One of the computers which I own has a virus that prevents me from updating AVG. Recently the auto update has not been working, however today when I try to download it manually it does not find the page, I have tried several times but it hasn't worked.
