Unable To Make Pc Performance Good?

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on a Compaq Presario S4100NX and I seem to have a problem with the Windows speed.
It's not my internet, I have a fast connection and FF runs very fast and smootly for me. It's like typical Windows stuff. When I open up my Documents folder even when I'm not running much else, it takes long to load. When I open up a program, it takes much too long. I open up a MSWord document, it takes too long.
Everything seems slow minus the internet. I don't think it is adware/viruses/trojans or anything as I appear clean and my hardware is in fine condition. Maybe my computer is a bit old? Maybe I have too many processes or programs? I'm not really sure what it is but I'd just like to make my PC run faster.

I can't make a good MS-DOS startup disk (for BIOS flashing) from XP SP2.I select the "Make an MS-DOS startup disk" from the Format dialog.Sometimes it gives up without a warning (i.e. the progress bar resets itself and the "Start" button goes active again). Sometimes it completes with a success message. However the disks never boot. I get the following messages from the BIOS (abbreviated a bit!): Looking for boot record on floppy... OK I've tried with a least 7 different floppy disks, all with the same result. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get it to work? I've also tried to make a MS-DOS boot disk on a Windows 2000 machine by downloading some freeware, but this does not work. I think the floppy drive is OK because I can boot from a Linux floppy disk (memtest86).

I am just in the process of producing a (ghost) image on a Samsung p500. This is for our student Higher Education courses at our college. What came to mind was that i have never seen a post that specifies the features of a good (ghost) image. Im a trainee Helpdesk Engineer at the moment so im sure my images could be improved

I had to buy a new Hard drive and OS (XP Pro) because of some critical windows problems. After it's all installdw, updated, and running, I find that it's running a whole lot slower then it used to with the old HD...I figure if anything else with the Clean HD and new OS it should run faster then the old. Any suggestions on why it has slowed down so much?

Last access time stampsXP automatically updates the date and time stamp with information about the last time you accessed a file. Not only does it mark the file, but it also updates the directory the file is located in as well as any directories above it. If you have a large hard drive with many subdirectories on it, this updating can slow down your system.To disable the updating, start the Registry Editor by selecting Run from the Start menu, typing regedit in the Open text box, and clicking OK.
When the Registry Editor window opens, navigate through the left pane until you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControl SetControlFilesystemIn the right pane, look for the value named NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate. If the value exists, it's probably set to 0. To change the value, double-click it. You'll then see the Edit DWORD Value screen. Enter 1 in the Value Data field and click OK.If the value doesn't exist, you'll need to add it. Select New | DWORD Value from the Edit menu.

I'm gonna buy a new gaming PC and I'll have 4GB DDR2. I've heard that on a 32-bit os I will only see about 3.5GB, so I'll have to install the 64-bit os.I've also heard that on a 64-bit os some softwares aren't running well as a 32-bit os. Is it true?

the wife was listening to music (on the hard drive through winamp not the cd player) last night - two songs into list the music stops - she checks the computer , monitor is off, cue light is flashing orange and the computer appears to be running.puzzled, she tries a restart. upon restart,the computer appears to be on- power supply on, fans are running, lights are on, but there is no image on the monitor, monitor cue light flashing orange. i check the system this morning and get the same basic results. aditionally, the cd drive and the floppy drive are unresponsive, apparently off- no "drive" lights. thinking, but running out of ideas and looking for some suggestions.

I believe I got rid of paytime.exe and secure32. However, I still have that desktop, and i cant change it. Also when I start my Internet explorer It used to give a link to spy sherrif, now it just doesnt do anything. I've tried everything I could. I dont know what to do

My hard drives have been set up as FAT32 under Windows XP. Now I wish to convert the drives to NTFS. I started to convert drive E, which is one of my data drives. I ran convert E: /fs:ntfs in a cmd window.I got the following messages:The type of the file system is FAT32.Enter current volume label for drive E: SPARE Convert cannot run because the volumne is in use by another process. Actually my problem is hardware related, I'm looking for a software solution.My problem is my mouse is behaving badly, it does very fast double clicks when I just do one click. When I want to drag an item I must try many times, when I want to select text, I cannot do it that easily.Sometimes I open the mouse and clean it with a special liquid, it works fine for two days but then the problem is back again. I've also changed the button internally many times from older mouses, what I mean, I desold the bad button and sold a new one with tin.

Dell Dimension 2350 windows XP 28GB hard drive 14GB free space -- don't know how much RAM I've read other posts and thought I'd try MSCONFIG suggestions but how do I know which microsoft programs to disable under services there are tons of them (DNS, Server, Workstation to name a few) -- same for programs listed under start-up most of them have unindentifiable names like wkufind, igfxtray, hkcmd - are these spyware??

Okay, attached find two pics, explorer1 and explorer2. The first is taken from the 'save as' menu from an open word document, and clearly shows the file 'OLKBB' under the temp internet files, as well as the tree structure above it. Explorer2 shows the view, only as seen from Windows Explorer, and obviously that folder (and God Alone knows what else) isn't there. I've got 'show hidden files' unticked, plus 'hide protected os system files' unticked. Still can't figure out why this is.

I need XP Professional to install and run a particular application. I have been told that XP Media is XP Pro under the hood and a good substitute. XP Media is ten dollars less that XP Pro. Which should I choose? What is added to XP Media that I might not want? Lastly, since I am buying the upgrade version. I am guessing the version of Windows 98 SE that I have will work.
