Oct 22, 2006I am looking to buy a laptop that I am told does not come with a restore disk. I would like to have a disk available so that if I want to reinstall windows at some later date, I can. I have Norton Ghost. If when I buy this computer, I use Norton Ghost to image the drive, will that provide me with a bootable restore disk so that if my whole windows install gets corrupted or virus-laden, I can restore it to the way I got it?

Dec 31, 2004I am having problems booting my laptop, it is a HP Pavilion ze4111s laptop, installed with Windows XP Home edition. I have tried using all the system recovery disks that came with the laptop and tried rebooting from the cd-rom but nothing is working. It says eventually when it does something after test bios that HP EEPROM has been reinitialized and to resume or enter setup. when booting from cd-rom and pressing to resume, it says "wrong CD for this notebook".

Sep 14, 2009I made 3 recovery disks for my hp laptop and ever since i posted the "my laptop wont turn on" ive been having problems with system recovery. i want to system recovery, put the first disk in, formated the hard drive, let the recovery manager put the disk files on the laptop, and let it restart. now what do i do, there are 4 options. i need to do the other 2 disks, and if i try to use the computer, a popup says "system not fully installed. run setup again." Now what should i do? my parents hate windows vista and i dont want to put factory installations and stuff back on it, because it had vista.

May 12, 2006Got a new computer in Maryland it had XP Pro installed on it. While moving to Florida a case with the original installation disk was lost and the HD on the computer got seriously damaged as to be unreadable. I had the computer tested and I can replace the HD and have it in good working order; but, what about the XP installation. I still have the OEM number on the sticker on the side of the tower case. Am I out of luck and need to get a new copy of XP Pro or can I get some kind of replacement for my lost disks?

Oct 29, 2007I bought a laptop and burned 4 recovery CDs for recovery purpose. Instead of burning as disc images, I just copied and pasted these 4 CDs to my USB HDD as 4 folders called "RecoveryCD 1", "RecoveryCD 2", "RecoveryCD 3" and "RecoveryCD 4". Now my laptop got problem and I lost my 4 recovery CDs. All I have now is 4 recovery folders in my USB HDD. I burned another 4 CDs as data disc from my USB HDD, but it didn't work out (it didn't boot because they are just data discs). I again burned my first recovery CD as a bootable CD, and it booted but didn't automatically install XP, drivers and other softwares. It just appeared some sentences on a black screen and cursor is waiting for me to type after the text, "A:>".

What I want to do is make a bootable backup image that will self install without windows in case of an operating system failure where windows is unavailable. A long time ago I saw this done with Symantec Ghost on a job I was on but have no idea how to accomplish the task myself. Aug 19, 2009I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

Aug 29, 2007I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on a Compaq Presario S4100NX and I seem to have a problem with the Windows speed.
It's not my internet, I have a fast connection and FF runs very fast and smootly for me. It's like typical Windows stuff. When I open up my Documents folder even when I'm not running much else, it takes long to load. When I open up a program, it takes much too long. I open up a MSWord document, it takes too long.
Everything seems slow minus the internet. I don't think it is adware/viruses/trojans or anything as I appear clean and my hardware is in fine condition. Maybe my computer is a bit old? Maybe I have too many processes or programs? I'm not really sure what it is but I'd just like to make my PC run faster.
Unable To Make Faster Startup?
Sep 10, 2005the wife was listening to music (on the hard drive through winamp not the cd player) last night - two songs into list the music stops - she checks the computer , monitor is off, cue light is flashing orange and the computer appears to be running.puzzled, she tries a restart. upon restart,the computer appears to be on- power supply on, fans are running, lights are on, but there is no image on the monitor, monitor cue light flashing orange. i check the system this morning and get the same basic results. aditionally, the cd drive and the floppy drive are unresponsive, apparently off- no "drive" lights. thinking, but running out of ideas and looking for some suggestions.

Feb 20, 2006Okay, attached find two pics, explorer1 and explorer2. The first is taken from the 'save as' menu from an open word document, and clearly shows the file 'OLKBB' under the temp internet files, as well as the tree structure above it. Explorer2 shows the view, only as seen from Windows Explorer, and obviously that folder (and God Alone knows what else) isn't there. I've got 'show hidden files' unticked, plus 'hide protected os system files' unticked. Still can't figure out why this is.
