View 7 RepliesAny URL or advice about pros&cons of using 64 bits OS, from a practical perspective?
- Would I notice a performance boost?
- Which kind of incompatibilities will I find?
The computer will be used for general purpose (at home) as well as more advanced tasks (virtual machines, etc).
This isnt really a problem but i was wondering if your page file size really makes a difference on performance. I tried to switch it up from 755MB to 900MB hoping it would make games run faster but it switched right back to 755.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on a Compaq Presario S4100NX and I seem to have a problem with the Windows speed.
It's not my internet, I have a fast connection and FF runs very fast and smootly for me. It's like typical Windows stuff. When I open up my Documents folder even when I'm not running much else, it takes long to load. When I open up a program, it takes much too long. I open up a MSWord document, it takes too long.
Everything seems slow minus the internet. I don't think it is adware/viruses/trojans or anything as I appear clean and my hardware is in fine condition. Maybe my computer is a bit old? Maybe I have too many processes or programs? I'm not really sure what it is but I'd just like to make my PC run faster.
It started when I decided I wanted to put a total of 4GB of RAM in my computer. The problem is that I have Windows XP x86 (32-bits) installed.
Then, a few friends of mine adviced me to get rid of this old Windows XP (32-bits), get the total of 4GB of RAM and install Windows 7 x64.
My CPU's architecture supports x64 systems, as I have 4 cores. My main problem, is that I would have to reinstall all my programs, applications and drivers (because I have the 32-bits-versions installed) and that if I stay with my 32-bits-XP system, it would only read 3 to 3.5GB of RAM aprox.
I've recently ran into an opportunity to install 64-bit windows XP. I can't really get Vista at the moment, so I'm considering this. Google has been vague on it, and most of the articles that I've read say that it's a bad idea. Granted they were published in 2005.
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust wondering. When I set BITS, Background Intelligent Transfer Service to automatic & started using services.msc, after a while, maybe days later, it goes back to manual & stopped. When I look at http://www.theeldergeek.com/background_intelligent_transfer_service.htm it seems to suggest that I could set it either way. Since I never seem to get windows update automatically, although I do get them manually, I just wanted to try this setting to see if it would work for me. . Running win xp pro, sp2, dell dimension 2350, 1 GB mem, 2.0 GHz, cable modem. Usually run daily auto scans with MSAB & AVG7. Also have AdawareSE, Spybot, Spyware Blaster.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there any way do transform Windows XP from 32 bits (NTFS) to 64 bits winthout having to reinstall same?
I Remember that Windows 2000 did this from normal partition to NTFS.
I have been having problems with .msi and other Windows Installer files. The first problem was based BITS not being enabled in the services.msc - and thus it was fixed. Some msi files, such as Apple iTunes updates and the simple usage of Windows Defender, are hindred unless I manually open services.msc via Run, then start Windows Installer Service; which has been set to start with the startup, and to do so automatically.I don't know why it's failing to start, but it is.

Since there are 8 bits to a byte there can be a major misunderstanding with abbreviations. Are there standard abbreviations for bits and bytes? I always assumed bits was small b and bytes was capital B. Is this true? 100 MB - mega bytes. 100 mb - mega bits.Is a 56k modem 56k bytes or bits per second? Can I assume everything is bytes unless bits is specifically stated?

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I get to the Log On screen, two of the user pictures have some small light blue bits joined to their right. When the mouse moves over them, they get smaller, and when it is off, they go back to their original size. After logging in, this problem is continued on the desktop, where it does it around a medium sized white box in my background. It happens in any program opened up, around the top, and around the Start menu bar. After a while, Internet Explorer stops doing it, apart from on certain pages, the same each time. However, when Internet Explorer has got over the problem, any programs opened up in front of it do not have the problem, until you close or minimize Internet Explorer. It does not happen to the three other users which, on the Log On screen do not have blue bits on. The lighter bits of an image tend to get light blue bits dispersed in. Is there anything I can do? The problem started around two days ago, without any seeming action to start it.MS Paint does not stop showing blueness even with Internet Explorer open, until size of window is changed to the actual size of the canvas minus about 20 px.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI appear to have a problem with an update for windows XP. I belive my computer has been trying to update this file for some time but it is only now, when I have tried to install a new anti virus (Bit defender 2010), that it has become a real problem. Having said that it has also prevented me getting service pack 3 and explorer 7.
When using windows update I am told that the following has failed to install, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773). It would appear that the file has downloaded but not installed. I have followed all the microsoft suggestions, one of which resulted in my having to repair windows. I have also googled this problem and found many references to the same update but no one appears to have a solution.
XP operating system. When I receive an e-mail with several photos I usually scroll through the photos with the right arrow target. After the last photo I start seeing bits and pieces of web sites that I have visited. What is causing this and how can it be prevented? When I send an e-mail with a photo in it am I sending this junk?

The "x64 Edition is not to be confused with the "64-bit Edition", Besides, just read the "Warning" on that page. Is this x64 edition a 32-bit hardware version of the 64-bit edition? Meaning, you require 32-bit hardware for this version to run, but the software has 64-bit capabilities. Or the x64 XP is like the XP 64-bit edition, but even heavier than the normal 64-bit Itanium sytem. (Because that fellow writes it requires Xeon and all that heavy stuff.

I do not know how to load drivers,I tried to see if that would work. When windows loads up,no mouse or keyboard to move around. There must be a virus or something hanging it up. If I reload windows my disk is ser pac 1a, will that be ok? Even if I do repair ,it still gets rid of service pack 2,seems I read that.Correct? Can I do this without keyboard functions in windows? should because the only typing is in the setup, correct?

We have a branch office who is connected via a vpn connection to our remote servers. The connection is 512 Kbps and they are connecting to a published application via Citrix and they also run locally on their systems Excel and a Web based email service. One of the employees decided to add another stick of 128MB RAM to their machine and they say it is significantly faster. They are proposing that they need to have more RAM added for all their systems now.I would imagine that the systems would be a little bit faster but not very noticeably faster. What do you guys believe?
