This isnt really a problem but i was wondering if your page file size really makes a difference on performance. I tried to switch it up from 755MB to 900MB hoping it would make games run faster but it switched right back to 755.

I heard that the paging file should always be 1.5x the amount of RAM that is available on the machine. My initial size of the paging file is set to around 2GB and I was wondering if I should change the initial size to 3GB or put it to 'System managed size'?

I am using an elderly 3M LCD projection panel on an overhead prjector for big screen Tv, driven by XP pro SP3. The panel has no controls for vertical/horizontal size and whatever monitor is used, an OS desktop fills the screen by default. I can resize the window for the TV viewing program in the normal way, just filling my projection screen, but the XP desktop is far too large.Does anyone know of a way to change the physical size of the desktop (including the taskbar) so that it sits in the LCD screen with a blank border all around, or maybe even make it custom resizeable as in a program window ( without changing the resolution)?

When I right click a file to view it's properties there are two different values shown: one for file "size" and the other for "size on disk". The second value is always larger. Could someone please explain what the difference is because I'm in the process of allocating space for backed up user data on a network share and I need to multiply the average file size by the number of users to get an estimate of how much space to allocate to that share.

The "x64 Edition is not to be confused with the "64-bit Edition", Besides, just read the "Warning" on that page. Is this x64 edition a 32-bit hardware version of the 64-bit edition? Meaning, you require 32-bit hardware for this version to run, but the software has 64-bit capabilities. Or the x64 XP is like the XP 64-bit edition, but even heavier than the normal 64-bit Itanium sytem. (Because that fellow writes it requires Xeon and all that heavy stuff.

When building computers, opting for Windows XP Home saves you good money, money you can put into better computer parts (like that Thermaltake Armor Jr. case!). I'm building another computer, so does anyone know the differences between XP Home SP2 and XP Pro SP2, and if XP Pro is worth the extra $40-50?

I received a message that I should update my computer to a 64 bit version rather than use the 32 bit version. I am not sure what this is or what it means. How will I benefit by updated to a higher version? I have Windows XP Media Centre Edition version 2002 service pack 2 AMD Athlon 64 X 2 dual core processor 3800.

I have post about my keyboard and mouse not working for 2 days all over the net with no answers,I guess no one knows.Seems like reformat and clean install. This is my moms pc, Dell 2400 xp home service pack 2 512 ram 2.40 ghz Pentium 4 ht dual processors, 40 gb HDD mostly free. The key board were talking about here is the standard keyboard and mouse shipped with dell products when you don't get upgrades. It will work in set up and bios, also when I ran diagnostics it worked. I do not know how to load drivers,I tried to see if that would work. When windows loads up,no mouse or keyboard to move around. There must be a virus or something hanging it up. If I reload windows my disk is ser pac 1a, will that be ok? Even if I do repair ,it still gets rid of service pack 2,seems I read that.Correct? Can I do this without keyboard functions in windows? should because the only typing is in the setup, correct?

I'm looking on Newegg right now, and see that there is a Retail version of Windows and an OEM version of Windows, but yet they fail to describe what comes in each one.So, which one should I buy? The Retail or the OEM? Money isn't an issue at this moment, so if the Retail is recommended, I could get it.

we built our new gaming rig and would like to install WinXP Pro on it. I have seen at the Newegg site that there is a $40.- difference between WinXP Pro and the 64bit version. With this configuration, do you think that it's better to go with WinXP Pro 64 bit?

My Laptop XP Pro with SP3 is totally different to the same on my PC, where I upgraded the Sp's as they came out. So the format is different between the two.I wanted to un-install my laptops version and install the version downloaded from MS, but I don't have the option to do so in Add/Remove on the Laptop as I do on the PC. Its listed, but no option to remove/uninstall.Can I un-install this SP3 in the registry or anyother way or could I just install my version and overwrite the current SP3.

I am struggling with the best options for the LCD screen on my Dell laptop which has a NVIDIA GeForce2 Go video card. The ideal resolution setting for this video card and screen is apparently 1600 x 1200, but that makes things too small for me. So I learned about the dpi setting in Display PropertiesSettingsAdvanced screen. However since this magnifies things for the same resolution, I am not sure why that is better than just using a lower resolution or even what the difference between the 2 options is.

I was hoping to get some opinions on how much improvement you would see if you would increase your RAM from 128MB to 256MB. We have a branch office who is connected via a vpn connection to our remote servers. The connection is 512 Kbps and they are connecting to a published application via Citrix and they also run locally on their systems Excel and a Web based email service. One of the employees decided to add another stick of 128MB RAM to their machine and they say it is significantly faster. They are proposing that they need to have more RAM added for all their systems now.I would imagine that the systems would be a little bit faster but not very noticeably faster. What do you guys believe?

For years I shut down the computer every night, then turn it on in the morning, but some one told me I should just leave it on all the time and use the Hibernate feature under the Power options? I've never become familiar with this or the difference between Hibernate and Standby. I have ZoneAlarm Pro as a firewall, along with Earthlink, which stops span and scans for virus email before I can dl it, so I feel sort of save there, but am not sure about this. I also have an APC back up power supply to cover me against power failure, and it will save and shut all programs down and turn off the computer after waiting a few minutes. Is it better to leave the computer on all the time and have the HDs turn off after an hour or so, the monitor turn off, and then have the computer go to Hibernate mode, instead of rebooting each day?

So Microsoft has this new "Microsoft Update" thing you can install or whatever, which I guess is like Windows Update plus other updates for Microsoft products? I'm a bit leery of switching to that because it sounds like you end up letting Microsoft look at all the software on your computer, etc. Is that correct?
What's the benefit of it?

Is there any difference between the primary and secondary IDE channels? I have my hard drive on secondary and my DVD 16X burner on primary. I tried this because when I put my DVD burner on secondary it would only get Multi-Word DMA mode 2 while the HDD got UDMA mode 5 on the primary. This is a new burner and capable of UDMA 4. After troubleshooting I switched channels and got UDMA mode 4 on the DVD burner when on the primary as master and still got UDMA mode 5 on the only HDD on the secondary as master. I don't understand the difference and the computer works fine and it appears I am getting the transfer modes I am supposed to.
