When building computers, opting for Windows XP Home saves you good money, money you can put into better computer parts (like that Thermaltake Armor Jr. case!). I'm building another computer, so does anyone know the differences between XP Home SP2 and XP Pro SP2, and if XP Pro is worth the extra $40-50?

This is a new installation on a new hard drive. I got to the point of entering registration information. The next screen asks to click on the user entered os the registered user on the prior screen and then asks for a password. Out of habit I tried my old password. I then tried no password and again with a space as the password. I tried a few others also to no avail. In all cases I get, "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted."How do I get past this so I can setup the domain and whatever else it may need?

My friend earlier today installed Windows XP Home full install (an OEM version we found out later), now he cannot connect to the internet. His ISP provider said he needs "network drivers"...my question...where does one get these "network drivers"?

I need a free program to run a logoff script in Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional. It has to not depend on the network, so no netlogon share or something.I've ended up being made aware of several ways to do this from searching, but I can't find an already built program that does this. There's HSLAB shutdown folder lite, but it has quick shutdown. I just want a logoff script, no other changes to Windows XP. There's group policy which is perfect, but doesn't support Windows XP Home. I don't want to get it to run on Home, that might be illigal.

I went into my computer and changed my screen appearance, I think I clicked Windows custom, when I restarted mycomputer all the icons appeared on my screen but when I click on the start button no programmes appear. So I cannot go into system restore to put my computer back to it's orginal setting.
I can access email and the internet but when I get web pages up I am no longer able to do anything.

The menu bar (File-Edit-View-Help)on many Windows applications such as Notepad has changed from beige to a white box behind the menu item. When I click on a menu item, such as "File" for example, the menu item background changes to a larger rectangular white box around the word "File" instead of the normal blue and stays white. And, so forth with the rest of the menu items. There is no affect on the drop down menu. Selecting still highlights the item in blue. I have had this problem before. It begins after a program uninstall, I think. I have restored to a previous point as a fix in the past, but Restore can't restore past the point I need. It just seems to be a cosmetic problem, but it bugs me.

Three days ago I boot up my PC and found something strange. The appearance was "set" as Classic. Ok, so far it didn't bother me. When I tried to change it back, I DID NOT HAVE THE OPTION! What disturbed me the most was that I had no internet connection. I checked the internet properties and my network settings were in blank. I checked the moden, and the "DSL" light was off. I don't want to imagine I have to reinstall Windows (XP); I've installed some software I (bought) downloaded and don't want to lose it. What can be wrong with my PC? I remember last time I turn it off was fine.

I have Windows XP Home Edition,I have Noticed that my tool bars are gray and in classic view.I go to startsettingscontrol paneldisplay and open it, the only option I have is Themes.I don't have desktop, screen saver, appearance, or settings. Anyone know why those options have disappeared. When I boot in safe mode I have most of those choices except screen saver and under appearance the only choice is classic. I went Start, Run and typed Services.msc Double-clicked the Themes service and it was already set at Automatic.

Windows XP allows you to customise the appearance of Windows XP and has I think 4 different appearances you can choose from in the display properties under windows XP style with Windows XP plus installed. Is there any website that lets you download files to change the appearance of Windows XP without installing an extra program such as Window Blinds? I ask because I'm not artistic enough to create my own.

Today I had uninstalled several unused programs with the Add-Remove utility of Windows XP.Then I also unchecked a few services in the 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and rebooted. Now, when I right-click on any folder or folder short-cut, the menu shows up only after waiting a full 3 minutes. The mouse cursor turns into the 'busy' indication and the system freezes during that time. The same scenario happens when I try to delete any folder (or folder-shortcut) using the 'Del' key on the keyboard. There is no such issue for any of the files.I would like to know what exactly is causing this problem and how it can be resolved. My PC is working fine now otherwise, and seems much faster than it was yesterday.

The "x64 Edition is not to be confused with the "64-bit Edition", Besides, just read the "Warning" on that page. Is this x64 edition a 32-bit hardware version of the 64-bit edition? Meaning, you require 32-bit hardware for this version to run, but the software has 64-bit capabilities. Or the x64 XP is like the XP 64-bit edition, but even heavier than the normal 64-bit Itanium sytem. (Because that fellow writes it requires Xeon and all that heavy stuff.

I have post about my keyboard and mouse not working for 2 days all over the net with no answers,I guess no one knows.Seems like reformat and clean install. This is my moms pc, Dell 2400 xp home service pack 2 512 ram 2.40 ghz Pentium 4 ht dual processors, 40 gb HDD mostly free. The key board were talking about here is the standard keyboard and mouse shipped with dell products when you don't get upgrades. It will work in set up and bios, also when I ran diagnostics it worked. I do not know how to load drivers,I tried to see if that would work. When windows loads up,no mouse or keyboard to move around. There must be a virus or something hanging it up. If I reload windows my disk is ser pac 1a, will that be ok? Even if I do repair ,it still gets rid of service pack 2,seems I read that.Correct? Can I do this without keyboard functions in windows? should because the only typing is in the setup, correct?

I'm looking on Newegg right now, and see that there is a Retail version of Windows and an OEM version of Windows, but yet they fail to describe what comes in each one.So, which one should I buy? The Retail or the OEM? Money isn't an issue at this moment, so if the Retail is recommended, I could get it.

My Laptop XP Pro with SP3 is totally different to the same on my PC, where I upgraded the Sp's as they came out. So the format is different between the two.I wanted to un-install my laptops version and install the version downloaded from MS, but I don't have the option to do so in Add/Remove on the Laptop as I do on the PC. Its listed, but no option to remove/uninstall.Can I un-install this SP3 in the registry or anyother way or could I just install my version and overwrite the current SP3.
