Unable To Install - Blue Screen
Aug 4, 2008
I have a PC that has had Vista on it and am trying to install XP. I connected the drive to my other XP machine to back up some data from it and then used disk management to format it (NTFS). When I tried to install XP (SP2) from the CD it kept going to a blue screen. The blue screen says it has stopped windows due to a problem and give the stop code - *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0XF7CAE524, 0xC0000034, 0X0000000, 0X0000000)
I tried deleting the partition to see if the Windows disk would make it to the format but the same thing happened. It's a SATA drive that I am using.

I have a problem installing XP. Here is a quick bit of history :When I initially installed XP, kept ketting blue screen during install. Took the PC back to the supplier and they 'changed something in the bios' and then it worked fine. Hard drive crashed.Have had to replace hard drive and during the process lost all BIOS settings. Managed to get an image of the drive onto new drive, but some files are corrupt, so tried to do a repair install of XP, but when it gets to the installing devices bit, the PC just reboots, installation restarts, gets to the installing devices bit and then the PC just reboots and so on.I'm assuming this is the same problem with the BIOS settings but I don't know what to change. It is an award BIOS and the motherboard is as GA-8S648FX.

Decided to do the semi annual reinstall of XP. Machine was lethargic but not broken.Prior to starting had reassembled the latest drivers for motherboard, video card, printers, mouse etc and put on a USB stick..All went pretty smoothly but after about 6 hours started getting BSOD The only thing thats changed is software the last thing it did was 71 updates from Microsoft! I have searched other posts but what can I DO about the 'problem'.I have done all the obvious - chkdsk, scan for virus etc etcI cant roll back as it will pretty much take a single jump back to an unformatted drive. If I reinstall why whould I expect a different result ? (unless the order of updates is significant)

I recently acquired the computer listed in my specs, and was having 10 second freezes when running programs or just exploring the hard drive. I have XP Pro SP2. I figured it might be windows or something so I tried running a clean install. Just after it asks for SCSI or RAID drivers at the bottom it freezes and then blue screens on me saying "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer... blah blah blah, error code STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7CAE524,0x00000C34,0x00000000,0x00000000). So I ran the Windows disk checker after booting in my original XP Pro SP2 and it gave me the same blue screen. AFAIK I have 2 Western Digital 74GB HDs in RAID 0 configuration... I surmise RAID 0 was installed incorrectly or I have a bum hard drive.

Not sure how much info you need, so I'll start at the beginnig.I'm trying to install my DSL service, but everytime I got to account setup, a technical error popped up and told me to try again later.I tried downloading internet explorer, but it only works when I'm using a separate internet provider (aol).Aside from me not being able to log on with my dsl, everything was fine.I also tried downloading the updates for my computer, but my explorer froze, so I restarted. This brings me to my biggest problem:After I restarted my computer, when my desktop was loading, a blue screen popped up that said physical memory dump.Remove all newly added hardware, and delete newly added software.Try restarting your computer, if this screen appears again, run system diagnostics utility supported by your hardwear manufacturer.Run memory check.0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000

I'm having a problem with this computer that I removed a bunch of spyware and viruses from. Basically the issue is at the same point every time I attempt to install SP2 it blue screens on me. There are no errors in event viewer when I reboot for that exact time it blue screened. I'm wondering what could be causing this. I've already check and made sure it wasn't faulty ram. Any other ideas what may be causing this system to blue screen at the same exact point each and every time I try to install SP2? Only with
SP2, I can browse the net etc all the time without any issues.

I have an XP Pro computer with SP1a. The computer started resetting itself after a blue STOP screen that flashed on for a fraction of a second shortly after the XP Professional startup screen. Since I couldn't persuade it to go into safe mode (or any mode), I tried a repair from installation CD. After about 20 minutes in the Installing Drivers section of the install it gives a STOP error saying that the CDR4_XP.SYS driver may be corrupt, and the error Page Fault in Nonpaged Area. It then does a memory dump and restarts with a Chkdsk and resumes installing drivers again. After a further 20 minutes the whole saga repeats itself. I have gone into the recovery console and get a warning message System Registry does not appear to have an active ControlSet key. I can then put in the Admin password and get into the console.

Well i built my pc along with my friend at the end of April. I have had it for several months now. After i first built it, it ran just fine for about a month then BSOD started to occur. I researched on the internet and i found a post that said to post my minidump so that they can see it. When i searched for the minidump it wasnt there, my final solution was to reformat. I reformatted and the problem went a away.

I just tried to install XP Pro x64 on my Dell XPS 720 PC. After it loads all the drivers, it crashes with a blue screen, giving me an error message. I tried to reset my BIOS to factory defaults, which screwed it up entirely and now I have to reinstall my original operating system (same, just 32bit) too, though I worried because the setup doesn't seem to recognise the entire size of my hard drive, or the other partitions. It gave me a BAD PBR as I tried to boot normally.I had my hard drive partitioned with Norton Partition Magic, maybe this caused it? Please can you advise how to fix this!

Decided to do the semi annual reinstall of XP after boot time got up to 9 mins and shutdown got to 5 mins.So nothing was really broken. Its a no-brand desktop machine based on GA-M55Plus motherboard. Have a main disk SATA II and two more in a Raid-0 array.Prior to starting had reassembled the latest drivers for motherboard, video card, printers, mouse etc and put on a USB stick..Disconnected the Raid array, blew away the partition on the main disk and installed XP from original media (which has SP2 included)
All went pretty smoothly but after about 6 hours started getting BSOD - its still too quick to read KERNEL something.along with the advice to uninstall recent additions / drivers etc. This happens after a few minutes or a few hours.Well the last thing it did was 71 updates from Microsoft!! (Including the cursed IE-8 which had previously caused grief on this machine)I can think of two things that have changed since before.
1. the 'latest' drivers
2. the order things were applied
Can you help with any advice as to the order things should be installed.
Whilst waiting for MS to get around to delivering updates I was installing the drivers etc. Starting with the chipset and video drivers. So is it best to wait hours to days for MS to deliver all the junk? (without the mobo drivers its a bit average)Can you get an image of XP with SP3 included - better yet all the 71 other vitally important updates? Do you think it would help to wind back the auto installed updates and try and get them in small chunks?(and why cant you download once and use many times!)

Dell inspiron 1000 2.2 celeron 256 ram 40gig Win-xp.the machine had recovered from serious error. Upon rebooting the windows program would not load and the hard drive made a clicking sound. I went into setup and no value was set for the hard drive. then the clicking stopped for no apparent reason and i got the windows to load. i went on line for about an hour then the clicking noise started again and the unit shut itself off and tried to reboot on its own. again i went to setup and no hard drive was detected. I did nothing but look around in the setup and again the clicking stopped on its own. the windows loaded again and i am online just now creating this message. Usually the cooling fan would be running alot, however i did not hear it running at all since the blue screen.I have had numerous blue screens. the online search always points to the Sonic Record Now as the culprit but offers no solution.

We've had 3 cases today of people who cannot login at all. After the boot, they only get the Windows blue screen(not the BSOD),the mouse pointer is there (you can move it and everything...), but there's no Windows logon box (where you type ctrl+alt+del , and enter your username and password). The problem is the same if I try to boot in safe mode...It happened on two different PCs (different hardware), and also on a Lenovo T60.

i read a very similar problem on this forum searching for a clue to get xp running. i recently bought a gateway GM5478, http://www.gateway.com/retail/gm5478.php that came pre-loaded with vista, some programs that i need to run now aren't compatible with it yet so i need to downgrade. i've tried using nLite to create a xp boot disc with the drivers integrated but it failed twice, resulting in the same blue screen error. the drivers im trying to use are:
ive also thought about purchasing a usb external floppy but i read that only three types are accepted during the xp install process and i couldn't find any of them online.

Im currently in the process of bringing my PC back from the brink. St present I am unable to boot because a system32/hal.dll is not present. Before this I was unable to boot without seeing a blue screen showing a lack of memory. I have been having problems for a few weeks now. At first just a little slow down and the occassional crash, but it has recently escalated to large scale slow down and fatal errors causing the pc to reboot. From the performances menu in Task Manager I can see large large CPU usage peaks with the processor running at 100% consistantly with no programs running. Simil;arly, on startup the PF usage is settled around 200MB but gradually increases over a matter of minutes until it is 2 or 3 GB+. This is usually about when the system declares a fatal error and reboots itself.
The only process that appears to be taking processor power at these points is svchost, that will usually run between 0-1%. I have been aprehensive to end this though as I know it to be a core process. I also had similar problems with lsass.exe. I researched and figured it could be the Welchia Worm or MSBLAST.D virus but have found no trace with any anti virus software. I tried the suggested treatments regardless with no success. A couple of days ago the problems got to the point where no prgrams would open and the system rebooted every few minutes. I managed to rectify this by reinstalling windows, but it appears to have been short lived. Now, after a fatal error the PC has been unable to reboot.

2 SATA Raid hard drives with striping.I'm having problems installing Windows XP Pro on my machine. When we first started to install the OS on the machine, I kept getting a blue screen error message before it boots into setup saying ERROR 0X0000007B. And then after that it started showing up book disk failure. Instead of SATA we tried just one EIDE HD, we switched memory, new cables, new powersupply, we switched the vcard. And just recently we finally switched the Motherboard. Now when we boot off disc we get an error message saying "boot disk failure". So we ran a boot setup windows xp floppy. It gets all the way to where it asks for "please insert windows xp installation cd" and when I do it doesnt recognize it but I hear the CD spinning. We've switched out the CD-roms with 2 different ones and still can't get any progress.

I hate to be redundant---especially on my first post---but I have just started having the same problem, whether I'm trying to view a .wmv file using Windows Media Playe (9, 10, or 11) or trying to watch a DVD using Intervideo WinDVD. I have the Mobile Intel 945GM chipset video drivers, but of course their website offers no kind of support about this. I have PLENTY of these "minidumps" to offer for someone's perusal if anyone would care to help a guy out? I'm stuck in a hotel for the next three days with no way to watch DVDs, and the bare network TV for entertainment.

My Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop on boot-up consistently gives a blue screen with ERROR (0X000000ED (0X81ACA988, 0XC0000006,0X00000000,0X00000000). I have read most of your fixes BUT in my case no matter what I do it ALWAYS boots to this screen. Trying to boot to Safe Mode results in a list of drivers prefixed by ?multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)c:windowsdriver.sys etc The machine will not boot from Floppy or CD and I?ve tried every combination of boot sequence under the F12 menu. In the BIOS it will not allow me to change any relevant settings, only the ?system date?, ?system time? and ?quiet boot?.and I cannot select the dropdown menu items either. Booting under Normal Startup, I see the Windows Logo and all that, but then the blue screen appears. I?ve tried removing the hard disk to get it to boot to floppy, removing the battery (which is totally dead), memory module, etc. Only thing left I think is to sling it in the Caribbean Ocean and go drink a bottle of rum.

so every time i boot the computer i get that good ol' blue screen of death right where windows should open to my desktop.. instead it says "welcome" with the light blue background.. the screen goes black and then comes back with the blue screen.. the message on the screen says:
stop: 0x0000007a (0xe16dac70, 0xc0000185, 0xbf985c66, 0x20e18860)
win32k.sys - address bf985c66 base at bf800000, datestamp 41107f7a
beginning dump of physical memory dumping physical memory to disk: and counts up to 100 then the computer restarts. i was able to get into safe mode to try a system restore but when the computer restarted it never finished the install (it actually gave me the confirmation that the restore was successful while i was doing a repair install later on) i have tried going through the windows install disc repair utility and doing a chkdsk /p and a chkdsk /r upon doing /r it froze at 53 percent and did not move (i left it for a good 4 hours the first time before restarting it.. and then over night the second time.. and both times it never passed 53 percent............

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?
