Does anyone know how I can transfer my files from my desktop computer to my laptop without having to take the long way around by making a million CDs? My desktop seems to be on its last leg with all the error messages and since it won't let me download any upgrades without the oriignal disc, which I cannot find, it has not been been updated in a while. So, I want to move everything over to my laptop.
I am after help in that i would like to take hard drive, volume 27g from one laptop win xp pro, and place on another laptop 80g win xp home.I do have memory flash but only 256mb.I also think i will need to look at partioning drives do hope i get a reply/plural great support
My desktop runs Win XP Pro. All drives are shared I got a new laptop that has Win XP Home. Both are connected to my network and I can see each machine on the other. I want to access files stored on the desktop to install software, but I get an error message on the laptop that I don't have the necessary ''Permissions''. How do I correct this?
I recently bought a new Dell XPS and want to transfer some files from my old computer but don't want everything. One computer (Gateway) uses Windows XP Home and the other (Dell) uses Windows XP Media. Is there a way to do this without having to pay someone?
Here's a toughie to crack 2 hard drives, both sata, 120 GB Seagate and 250 GB Maxtor
hooked up to a Asus P4P800SE board with p4 2.53 ghz cpu and 1024 mb of DDR333 ram Windows XP Pro SP2
now.... on a fresh windows install when i copy a file from one drive to the other it goes fast (700 meg file in under 30 seconds)... then I install all my basic software (office, winamp, visual studio, nod32, device drivers for manufacturers website) and following that eventually my performance drops through the floor... it takes like 7 minutes to copy the above mentioned 700 meg file and while at it the CPU usage is high. Process explorer (sysinternals) says that most of that cpu power is taken up by hardware interrupts and I cant do much else when its copying. If i boot with WinPE those files transfer good again... 30 seconds for 700 megs.
SO this is a software problem and what i've done already is 1. disabled my startups 2. double checked that my drives are DMA enabled 3. switched back to standard IDE drivers for the controller (made no difference so i reinstalled the Intel chipset drivers again) 4. defragged the drive
and i'm out of ideas on what else I could try... if anyone has any ideas i'd be greatful. there is no viri/spyware on this machine. its been scanned left right and center
I am currently running Fat32 and as noted in a previous post I am building a new computer. I have copied some files on to cds. What I would like to know (if someone has done this) is that can these files be transfered to the new build as I plan on going NTFS. Will they convert from fat32 to NTFS when copied from the disc or even work at all? Or just out of luck and have to start all over?
I'm quite new to computers so this may seem like a silly question, but I thought I'd ask anyway...I'm due to buy a new computer, but I have many MP3 music/video files on my old one and want to transfer them to the new one. The thing is I don't want to do it my connecting the two PC's ( with a wire/cabel etc.), so I was wondering if there's any other way of doing it?? Could I use a disc for instance (floppy disc??)
I wanted to transfer all my files from one box to another, so I rammed in the gateway hard drive, copied all files in the root of the drive, and pasted it into a folder on my New desktop. When the file transfer finished, the folder (on the New desktop) disappeared... Funny. So, I checked the hidden files in explorer. Not there...Well, I used the command prompt. Not there either. After a while, I forgot about it, and just recently got a new defrag program (SmartDefrag).
I have a usb 2.0 Vantec NexStar 3 external hard drive enclosure, it is packed with a Western Digital 80gig hard drive. After about 10 minutes of continuous use it will go unreconized by my computer and i have to restart the external drive in order for my computer to see it again. Is this a hardware failure in the enclosure or is it my computer? Now, if there is on and off use (like listening to mp3's or videos) it will go a lot longer time before it quits on me.
I did MS Outlook 2003 full backup to an external hard drive just before my computer died and I want to transfer my e-mail files from the external hard drive to my laptop circa 2006.
I was wondering if there was a way to transfer the Program Files folder to the second disk withouth messing up the start path of those programs, and still be able to access them in the Start menu.
I have a really old computer; not to sure what the system specs are like other than it being made by Tiny and having a 4 GB HDD. My mum wants to use the word processor now and then but the printer has broken and she would rather not buy another; partly because drivers may be an issue and partly becuase I have unused retail copies of Windows ME and 2000 that a couple of mates donated and can print off at my Dad's house. The issue with 98 is that I want to be using USB sticks when necessary to transfer word documents over to my Dad's computer running XP to print but 98 does not have the necessary drivers and I think it is impossible to get any; from what I understand that what 98 SE was for.
I am trying to import files and settings from old PC to a new one using a flash drive. The files were collected and are on flash drive File name USMT2IMG.Dat What is the procedure to get them on the new PC so they will be imported?I copied the file and it is in My Docs but when I am asked where to look for the file it is not there to select. I know it is there because I can open My Documents and see it.Don't understand this at all.
I am trying to put music on my mothers MP3 player, which i have done before multipul times, but now everytime i try to move a file from my music file to her MP3 file, it says "Cannot create or replace file: The disk is write protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk." i dont know how to remove the write protection. i tried to move other files to the MP3, but all files give me the same message, even the ones that are already in the MP3 folder
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.I hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive. My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
I have Windows XP. I have a folder on my desktop with various files in it, of different types, like word pad files, pdf files, etc. They are all mixed up. I would like to arrange these files in order of file type.
Due (I think) to a virus my XP Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gd_080 814-1236 will not boot to Windows properly. I just get a blank screen. I can CTRL/ALT/DEL to get Task Manager and then run a task from there, including MSCONFIG or a browser but the thing will not give me any options when I boot and often will boot into Safe mode - and again I cannot do anything with it.
other day my desktop came down with something. windows has slowed to a crawl.. if i click on the start menu, 2 minutes later it will pop up. if i click on a program (firefox, for example) it will never open and the whole comp will just sit there frozen forever.. if i leave it for a few hours like that, firefox will have finally opened.. once in firefox.. it seems i can move about a bit quicker.. but its still unbearably slow. in (advanced) processes menu everything is fine, and the cpu level seems to be where it should be, nothing using up all the cpu that i can see.. after a restart (by holdiong the power button down), i can move around normally for about 1-2 minutes then it basically freezes up again. next i went on my laptop to look up names of processes (to see what they do) and 10 minutes later, the laptop is doing the SAME THING.also, my friends computer seems to be doing the same thing. I was sending some emails with attachemtns to him recently. (eMail worm?)
i can only get them to function in safe mode, and the weird thing is.. bit-defender says its clean of viruses, and ive used search&destroy, spysweeper, ad-aware, and nod32 to clean out most stuff.. but nothing seems to help. also, it seems that S&D will find a bunch of stuff and clear it out fine, and if I run the check again immediately after it finds the same bad stuff again. this is only in regular mode, in safe mode it finds nothing.
When I try to access my desktop from my laptop and desktop to laptop, I keep getting a message that says that I do not have access permissions to network resources. I set up my network, enabled file/printer sharing, and configured firewalls to allow the network. My network has been working fine for about a year now until just recently. (I didn't install anything new, and I keep both computers updated everyday.)
The problem is that when i put the hard drive in my laptop, windows xp setup doesn't recognize it (I know it needs the SATA support drivers) and i don't want to slipstream the drivers and burn another disc. So I put that same hard drive (from my laptop) in my desktop and xp setup did recognize it. But I wanted to be sure before I went ahead and started the installation. So is it ok that I use my desktop to install xp on my laptop hard drive and put it back into my laptop? Keep in mind i'm trying to install windows xp tablet edition which is different from other xp installations.
My laptop (a Dell D620) has developed an annoying issue.Ever since I connected a projector into the spare VGA output on it the desktop icons move whenever I close the lid down during use or before its completely shut down. The projector was running at 1024x768 as an extended desktop, and I have since checked all the settings in my display properties and NVidia settings, but nothing seems to be wrong there.
I am about to leave a company. I will need to return their laptop, I would like to scrub all traces of my internet searches.I have admin access on this laptop but do not know how to make sure all traces of my searches have been removed and can not be retrieved.
I'm hoping someone on here can at least help me to get files off my laptop -My fiance turned her laptop off yesterday prior to us going out. When we came back, she tried to turn it on and it would should her "compaq" bootup screen, then it would show a black screen. Eventually it would read: windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file.So I put the Windows disk in, ran the recovery console, and followed the microsoft directions (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477) - doing method 3 and 2.
Any ideas on removing ALL unneeded files from my XP PRO installation. I bought XP Pro for my laptop, but i probably should have bought XP Home. My C: drive is partitioned at 3 GIG. its a laptop and i don't mind getting rid of ALL CAB files also, when i travel, ill carry the CD.
I have one laptop that has been corrupted and will no longer boot. I have since removed the HD and place it in an USB enclosure. I have connected it to another Laptop running xp and have no problem viewing the contents of the drive.
At first I was unable to access the administrators documents, but after booting in safe mode, I changed ownership of the entire drive. At this point I am able to access every folder though I can not open any of the files.
I have a Compaq laptop that I bought about a year ago. Of course, I did not get a Windows disk with it and I cannot find the software that I did get. When I try to start it, it says that Windows cannot start because a file is missing or corrupt. The file is "windowssytem32configsystem". It suggests that I attempt to repair it using the original Setup CD-ROM, which, of course, I don't have.
my laptop gave me the blue screen and the boot disk could not get it back up.I purchased a plug n play USB 2.5" hard disk enclosure.I connected it to my second laptop and it recognizes it as another drive F:I can see all the directories and files, but cannot access them.I ran a Scan for Virus on the F drive and it found nothing.I get an error popup "File or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I double click.
