View 5 RepliesThe problem is that when i put the hard drive in my laptop, windows xp setup doesn't recognize it (I know it needs the SATA support drivers) and i don't want to slipstream the drivers and burn another disc. So I put that same hard drive (from my laptop) in my desktop and xp setup did recognize it. But I wanted to be sure before I went ahead and started the installation. So is it ok that I use my desktop to install xp on my laptop hard drive and put it back into my laptop? Keep in mind i'm trying to install windows xp tablet edition which is different from other xp installations.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61, type 7659, model 2DM laptop. I am trying to use a self-made windows xp pro. disk to use the Repair function on my laptop. This is for multiple reasons, one of them being that in Display Properties the Desktop tab has dissapeared. Nothing on the internet can change the fact. I have backed up all of my settings, just in case. Can you tell me three things?
(1). If everything stuffs up, and i use my backup to fix my computer, will i need all of my disks to reinstall my programs?
(2). Is it possible to connect my pc's cd/dvd drive (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-115D) to my laptop?
(3). If it is possible, HOW do i do it?
My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
I was just wondering if there's a special piece I can connect to the hard drive internal plug (that used to connect to my comp) that will like change it and make it into a USB??

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy son purchased an Acer laptop with Win XP. It keeps shutting down during certain processes like converting files and things that run on their own like virus scans and SpySearch and Destroy. We also cannot get his e-mail to receive. It did for a couple days, but now won't work and our broadn band tech support tried all suggestions and said something else is wrong. We figure at this point the best thing to do is reformat the harddrive. This will also get rid of some unwanted files that were already on the harddrive that we can't delete.
The issue: how do we do this. The only disk we have is the Acer recovery disks.
My laptop won't even turn on. It's a Dell 700m just purchased 2 years ago. It is in mint condition and even with the charger plugged in, it won't turn on. I held the button down over 3 minutes and nothing yet. Took battery off, waited a few then still nothing. It looks like a dead HD?

It won't boot from the CD - it just tells me that the operating system is not found. I had that much figured out. I'm no computer whiz, but it looks to me like the drive IS recognized in the BIOS. I even loaded the XP onto a flash drive and tried to boot from that.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI didn't open any suspicious emails, shared on P2P networks and certainly made no changes in system files. Only thing I did was what I do periodically. I defragged my hard drive, uninstalled games and went into msconfig and stopped 3 programs from start up (DEAMON tools, PowerISO and SQL service) I was also having problems with the SpyCop package so I uninstalled and reinstalled.
So I restarted (like I should) and the only process it goes through is the DELL start up "splash screen" After that it usually does the Windows XP "splash screen" but it never does the Windows XP screen, it just stays black, nothing. I pressed F2 to see if anything changed and nothing seemed to, as far as I know. I tried F8 to enter safe mode and a couple lines of text show up and stop and hang. I even tried to let it sit there to see if maybe it's just getting used to the defrag job(s) I did, still black. It's still black as I type this.
I am trying to reinstall xp on a friend laptop.. I have watched the post screen identify the hard drive, and then in the installation it says the hard drive cannot be found. It is pretty annoying.

Couldn't do Control-Alt-Delete, just had to press down power button for 10 seconds. I managed to get it to stay on long enough to copy my important files--it never locked up while I was copying files onto a CD, but almost always locked up immediately after I ejected the CD. Sometimes it would restart on its own rather than freezing up. Twice I saw a blue screen flash with some text on it, but it was too quick for me to see what error messages it had. I noticed also that it started saying that it had found new hardware on my computer and tried to install it. The new hardware that it said it found was: VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 Host Controller.I searched some forums for possible causes, and saw that someone had a similar problem and that their computer worked when the CD/DVD drive was in use--I've found that works for me too. It works totally fine as long as I have a DVD in the drive playing or on pause.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis forum has been incredibly helpful, and now I must ask another "ignorant" question to maintain my computer loving insanity. I recently acquired a used laptop running XP Home. I use Pro for work, so I thought it wise to install Pro over the top of the the former owners' OS and thereby effectively delete his old files etc. Well, what I found was that Windows simply imported the old OS info right into the new install, leaving folders, files and programs I didn't want on the hard drive. So my question for you guys and gals is this. How do I destroy everything on my hard drive, then make the laptop (without floppy drive available), accept the reloading of my XP Pro CD? It is a full OEM version by the way. If I can format the HD, and have BIOS boot from CD-ROM, will I have a "fresh" CD-only install at that point, or will there still be little goblins of information running around in my system

I'm trying to reformat an Acer Laptop 120GB hard drive that had problems before with VISTA so I'm using my copy of Win XP Pro, (I own the Volume disk, and have used it several times with no problems). When I try and do a reformat it hangs at 80%.I've used MEMtest86, no erorrs, I've tried Ultimate bootCD, no probs, I've tried SystemRescueCD, no help. I ran CHKDSK from a DOS prompt no problems. I ws going to replace the MBR but it says that I might not be able to access my drive if it doesn't work...is that true ?Right now I'm trying a MS-DOS FORMAT from a command prompt and its taking forever. After 20 minutes its only at 1%.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI need to replace my internal hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I do not want to copy anything from it. I bought the new hard drive, but I am not sure how or what order to install everything. I have the 'Reinstallation CD MS Win XP Home' from Dell, SP2 & SP3, and the Drivers & Utilities cd 'for reinstalling dell inspiron system software'. Since these are all 'reinstallation' cds, can I use these? Is there a website or other link that you can point me to that may have step by step instructions/pictures of this entire process? I am not doing an actual reinstall, but that's what the cds say. I am installing a NEW hard drive. I'm pretty sure I can get the actual HD in the laptop. It's just a matter of what to do next to get Windows XP on it.

The windows xp installed just fine on my pc but the problem I've run into is the drivers, the disk that came with it wouldn't work so I went to dell's website put in my service tag and downloaded all the drivers that it says my pc needs. everything installed ok except for my broadcom, which is not allowing internet, my warranty on this computer is out so I can't get any advise from them without paying a fee even though I bought the hard drive from them, and the computer! Just hoping I could get some help, and wondering if I have to install vista for everything to work right.
