I have a Compaq laptop that I bought about a year ago. Of course, I did not get a Windows disk with it and I cannot find the software that I did get. When I try to start it, it says that Windows cannot start because a file is missing or corrupt. The file is "windowssytem32configsystem". It suggests that I attempt to repair it using the original Setup CD-ROM, which, of course, I don't have.

I get a message saying something about cannot find the directory, I have tested which directory it meant and found out that it is the c:windows epairsystem that it cannot find, it also is not hidden nor anything. Windows starts copying the installer files to the drive.
After its done, it reboots. I don't push a button because I know its going to start xp setup now.

The problem is that this error already occurred and i cant access my windows at all. I have a mac computer with bootcamp (so it has both a mac and pc harddrives), the pc harddrive being the one that has this problem and that i cant access. Unfortunately, I do not have the original XP CD so that's probably not an option... Is there any way I can fix this problem without the CD, or is it absolutely necessary?
I have a Compaq Presario 3045US that freezes on occasion for no apparent reason. Mouse, keyboard will not function, unable to shut down, have to pull power and reboot. Don't get any error message and no repeatable process although watching dvds does seem to cause it to happen more often.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Compaq laptop which has 512 meg ram shared so technically i get 300 meg. it came with windows xp home edition. also it has 100+ programs that compaq decided to load it making it even slow.It also have backup harddrive partition and i created backup dvd's. the problem is if i reformat it using those then all the bloatware will be installed again. which i dont want.I have also got a copy of windows xp. what id like to do is format the computer using a plain windows xp cd. my question are these: would the product key on the back of the laptop work with the xp cd that i have.AND how do i backup the drivers that i would need from the laptop?

Hopefully I don't have problems when it comes to finding the right drivers for my laptop computer, but the other thing that I am worried about is downloading the updates. My computer is only 300MHz with 96 MB of RAM in it, I only connect at 28.8 on the phone line and I haven't got a network to connect my laptop to high speed. It originally came with vista (and indeed he gave me the recovery discs that would put it back if I wanted toBut I'm trying to install Windows XP instead. I seem to have managed to get all other drivers installed. From googling apparently it's the audio and video drivers that most people have problems with.
My compaq is having problems starting up. It makes a repetitious sound like the hard drive is trying to start but can't and will continue to do so indefinately or until it boots. So I assumed it was a hdd issue, however trying the hd in another laptop worked fine and an alternate hd in my Compaq has the same problem. It does start up occasionally, although it usually freezes half way through booting up, but can occasionally work upto half an hour.

Everything is hooked up properly so it is not a power problem.

My company then decided that it wanted Small Business Server 2003 installing, so after using Compaq Smartstart to format and re arrange the disk arrays, which is no problem at all system formatted then a raid 5 disk array set-up which smart start detects and reads correctly However, now that is done the system will NOT install SBS 2003 or any other operating system at all, at the point of the install where the disk reads "Windows Set-up" the system just stops and freezes, this happens with other disks and different O/S discs.

View 10 Replies View RelatedMy laptop died and I removed the hard drive.I hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive. My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

I have an older laptop in which the hard drive and broken on, I was hoping to fix it so that my in-laws could use it to keep in touch with family via Skype. So...I purchsed a new 20gb hard drive and fitted it yesterday. The laptop booted up ok but after the Bios screen displayed an error message of "ntldr is missing press ctrl, alt, delete to restart" When I rebooted with my Windows XP cd in it's gets just past the Bios screen and then displays some errors in French! The jist of these errors I think is that the boot.ini file could not be found. I tried to reboot but I still get another error message in french! From what I can see it does not say anything about boot.ini this time though. I have also tried a XP Recovery Console Repair to no avail either and have exhausted everything I know. what I need to do to install XP onto this HDD (it has been formatted too)? Any explanation on why the messages are in French? Also one thing to mention is that when I manage to boot with XP Live CD and use Command Prompt the letters I type on the keyboard come out all wrong ie. : comes out as * and m comes out as 0

View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a faulty laptop off my friend assuming that it just needed a fresh install off Vista, I installed Vista and now on bootup i get the error saying a file is missing, the file is usually "winload.exe" but can sometimes be other files which I cant remember the name of. Some times Vitsa will load up fine and the laptop would be perfect, but 90% percent of the time i got this error, whichis really boggling me.
I then tried to do a fresh install of XP, during the install I get a blue error screen, saying there is something wrong with my hardware and to run fdisk on my hard drive. I couldnt do this due to not being able to boot up so I bought a fresh new hard drive trying to fix the problem. I installed this HD and started the XP installation again, I am still getting the error message and I am stumped on what to try next.
My laptop froze earlier today.I shut it down and then restarted it sit on the windows loading screen forever.When i try starting in safe mode, is also take a long time then instead of starting it turns off and on again i also tried starting in the other safe configurations no luck i put the recover xp cd in and did a fixboot still no luck.
