I have an external hard drive to back up on to, a Freecom FHD-2. My OS is Xp Pro SP 2and I use Norton Internet Security 2007,Spybot and AVG anti spyware and Sophos anti root kit scan. I used to have no problem doing a backup but now I get the following error msg."Cannot get exclusive access to hard disk drives. Please make sure that Windows Computer Management Consol or other software that locks the hard drives are not running"I have turned off the Norton package and my screensaver, but I am at a loss as to what or how to turn off any other software locking the drives. Can anyone help? It used to be so easy to do a back up, but now I am not able to.
I have win xp with norton goback 4.0 on it. Has been working fine but when son added a larger power supply i cannot boot into windows now. I get a black screen that says. GoBack internal Error-Failure code: gb_genlog(175)-Press any key to reboot. When i press any key i get Norton screen that says please wait. But then it goes right back to the erroe screen.Cannot get into windows to remove norton, so is there a way to get to dos or something to remove it ?Also my son says if i need to wipe HD and start over that maybe he can put my HD in his computer as a slave and copy the files i do not want to lose. Will this work ?.
I have been trying to install multiple programs over the last few days and I am finally fed up with the errors that I have been getting. I tried downloading the newest version of the installer, but that didn't do anything.I get a couple errors.Error 1721 and this:This Installation package could not be opened.Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package.One of the programs is ITunes, straight from the Apple website.

Is there anyway I can specify a serial number when deploying a package via GPO? Its getting a bit tedious deploying the software then having to input the serial number 60 times.
When attempting to install certain packaged software it will fail or in some cases bring up the Windows Installer information window.We have noticed that it appears to happen when an installer, EXE or MSI relies upon transforming a further extracted MSI with an MST file.This only occurs if the files are attempted to be extracted to the root of the temp folder. The files are not created hence cannot be run. The Windows Installer information window will appear if you attempt to run msiexec pointing to a file that does not exist.
I have Windows XP and have the windows firewall on. I also have Norton 2005 Systemworks. Funny thing happened, I turned off the windows firewall under control panel, windows firewall. But when I open control panel, security center, it says there is a firewall on. I don't beleive I have a firewall with Norton Systemworks
I did an AVG Rootkit scan which turned up "c:windows/system32/userinit.exe" as a dodgy file. I removed it and now the machine won't login when I boot the system. With a bit more digging it seems that this file was actually the login information within the registry and as it can't find a valid user/password it just keeps asking me click the user name and login. When I click it just loops back and throws back up the window, asking me to click the user name again.How I can access the registry and reset the userinit.exe file?I've tried selecting "last good configuration" which didn't work.I also tried to download Bart PE on another machine (running Vista) to set up a boot CD, but it wasn't particularly clear how to go about it, so I tried using the XP System Recovery app on the install disks. This got me into a C: prompt.
I bought my Dell 4700 about 6 months ago and was just going through the discs that came with it. I remembered that the Dell did not come with a Windows XP install disc in case I need to re-format. Is this normal? There is an option under Start....Accessories....System Tools to create OS backup disc. Is that what I need to make a disc or should it have came with one?
Are you guys having the same problem? Using IE7, when viewing a thread, if I hit the back arrow to go back to the page I was previously viewing, it doesn't move at all. It started acting weird a couple of days ago when it took sometimes two hits on the back arrow to go back. Now it doesn't go back to the previous page at all.
I am trying to back up my docs and system when I do on either the wizard or the advanced mode-it still tells me "the back up file name could not be used: "Eackup.bkf" " please ensure that it is a valid path and the you have sufficent access."
I was wondering if someone knew how I can get my back button back. when I get into a site. it wont let me hit the back button at the top of the screen.
I scanned through the past posts and didn't see anything on this recently. (which surprised me.I'm running a Dell xps T500 with Windows XP SP2 and IE7 Browser. I'm on a home network (cable) with ethernet and using Norton 360 for the protection suite. I also have Webroot SpySweeper and all udpates have been completed. All current scans have been done as well. MS updates were installed via auto update and now IE 7 gives me the error "IE cannot display the webpage" which stops me from getting to any other website (so I can download Mozilla ). I have gone out to the MS site and run through the troubleshooting options there:1) Can't view another webpage2)Network diagnostics reveal no problems3)Reset the modem/routers4)Deleted Browsing History5)Used the No Add-Ons Mode6)Disabled Norton 7)Tested the connected in safe mode, still got the error8)No third party conflicts9)Checked the device manager for issues, and found none10)Finally, reset the IE defaults, rebooted and still got the stupid error
I did a quick search and read through the first 2 pages of hits but didn't find anything relating to my problem. If there's a solved thread, please point me to it.I'm running W2K and when my Norton subscription ran out I decided to get Norton Internet Security 2006. After installing it I noticed that it would act funny any time there was a hardware change. If I shut down my PC and swapped the RAM sticks around, or installed/removed a hard drive, when I went to start up the PC again it would reboot. It'll even do it if I forget and leave a USB cable in without anything attached at the other end. At first I couldn't figure out what was causing it, but I didn't mind much because it would just reboot once and that was that. But over the last few months it's gone from once to 2-4 times on average, and longer on occasion. It was through this process that I realized the reboot happens as Norton is loading.
Well, today I was having some issues with my video acting up I suspect it's from a failing memory stick so I opened up the case and removed the offending stick. But when I started it back up it wouldn't stop rebooting. I continued working on my work laptop and it continuously rebooted for about half an hour before I said forget it and booted into safe mode.Unfortunately, I needed to do some printing and of course printing doesn't work in safe mode. So I thought maybe I'd uninstall Norton it gave me an error saying it couldn't uninstall in safe mode. Very funny, I thought. since Norton is what's keeping me from being ABLE to boot into normal mode.
A message from Norton that says I have a Trogan Vundo on my computer.When I use the Norton removal tool it does not find the virus.When I use the Norton scan it does.

I had trouble with Norton therefore, do not want to purchase it again. also what type of anti virus is the most effect my macfee does't seem to get everything because I do online virus scans and it has always missed omething
I know several people have experienced Norton Firewall disabling their ability to deliver mail in Outlook and Outlook Express. I found an article at the Norton Site http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPO [...] vy=&csm=no And it has solved the problem. I turned off the Privacy control and turned back on the Firewall and all is well. Hope it works for others as well
I recently had a problem with NPF 2005 that resulted in my uninstalling the program using the it's uninstall program. When I tried to reinstall the program, I discovered that the installer would not run. I have tried various methods to start the installer from the NPF 2005 install CD but nothing worked. The Symantic knowledge base suggested copying the CD to the hard drive and installing from the hard drive. This did not work either. I thought that perhaps the setup program has been corrupted so I tried the CD in a computer running Windows ME. The installer came to life and was ready to proceed with the installation. I did not attempt to complete the Installation, I only wanted to determine if the setup program had been corrupted. Does anyone have any idea why XP might not allow the program to run
My PC (Holly) bought in 2003 runs Windows XP(SP2). Also Norton Antivirus renewed annually/Norton Personal Firewall (2002), Mozilla Firefox.Up to now, have had no problems with the viruscan or the firewall, but I had to renew annual subscription to Antivirus and unable to download new Subscription from Symantec website (got error report with no explanation after putting in card details) so went and bought a disk of it (2007 version) from PC World. Was prompted to remove Symantec Personal Firewall when I started installation
I did remove it, with reluctance, thinking it might be difficult to reinstall the firewall and it is I have the original Symantec firewall disk, 2002 version, which came with PC. Anyway, I successfully installed the Viruscan 2007, then put in the disk for the Firewall to reinstall it.installation of firewall got message box with a red cross: NORTON INTEGRATOR: FAILED TO REGISTER FILE TYPES No other explanation,I did not know what else to do, I clicked it, it went way, and the installation proceeded. After all the installation tasks completed, I was asked to restart PC. My computer froze at that point. Would not close. Eventually I switched it off at mains, then restarted it in the usual way. The Norton Personal Firewall icon shows up and when I open it, it is not Enabled, neither can I get it to change to being enabled by clicking the button
When my computer is loading something flashed on screen. The next time it appeared I hit pause. It's called American Megatrends AMI.com. Did a search found nothing . What is it? Also the clock is set back to Jan 1 2001. Norton won't run a live update and under programs it shows new progams added which have been on the computer for a few years

I bought a new laptop a week ago and it came with Windows XP Home Edition. It also came with Norton AntiVirus already installed on it. I dislike Norton AntiVirus and decided to manually uninstall it. I went into regedit and deleted all Symantec and Norton files. Except for one file it wouldn't let me delete.A few days later (after I had no trouble installing such games as Starcraft, Blockland and Endless-Online) I tried to install The Sims, Lego Creator and some older games onto my computer from CD's. I have just loaded Norton Anti virus and Spy sweeper on my daughters laptop and it now switches off at random times.When I rebooted I just got a black screen with a white cursor blinking at me in the top left corner.I switched it off again and when I rebooted I pushed F8 and got into windows but it switched off again after a few minutes. I have now managed to uninstall Norton and Spy sweeper and the computer is ok( 4 now!) I need to install Norton and spy sweeper as we want to get her computer up and running on the net.I have both running on my computer with no problems.Her operating system is windows XP SP2.

I was just wondering, if you had norton ghost 9.0 can you copy your harddrive Operating system and all and if you had an older computer and you bought a new harddrive for it could you then copy your xp operating system and all onto the older computer? Like say you had an old computer with windows 98 on it. and you have a computer with windows xp. can you use norton ghost to copy the windows xp operating system and all the stuff on the xp computer and then if you formatted that win98 harddrive so it was empty then put the xp system on the old win98 computer harddrive and have it work?
