i just installed windows XP (with sp1, or maybe not even that)
i havnt hooked the computer up to the net yet, but after i installed my Nvidia drivers that came with the mother board, the windows Boot screen freezes and only works on safe mode till i uninstall those drivers. could this be a problem because i havnt downloaded the service packs from the net yet?
Can anyone advise me please? XP crashes and restarts the PC from the
beginning as soon as it reaches the point where the Windows XP desktop would
normally appear. Trying to boot in Safe Mode provokes the same behaviour at
the same point in the boot sequence ... howver, swapping the HDD for a drive
with Windows 98SE loaded onto it allows me to boot up and run OK under that
OS, so I'm fairly sure that it's an XP fault (virus maybe). AVG7 didn't bark
before this happened, and ZoneAlarm didn't report anything either.
I have a problem that I just can't figure out. I 'll be on the internet, and when I click on a link(not every time), the page that I'm on just freezes. My mouse will indicate that it's busy, but it just stays like that. I first thought it was Spyware Terminator, so I uninstalled it. But to no avail. It did it again. Now remember, it's not every time. I keep a copy of my important files on an external drive, so reinstalling windows is nothing more that a pain in the behind. Which is what I did. I have an oem vesion of Windows MCE, which I've never had any problems with before. So here I am, thinking that I've taking care of the problem, when you guessed it, it did it again. And this is with barely anything installed, because I uninstall almost everything that MCE comes with. And this is where I'm at. I just can't figure out what's causing this to happen. I 've been coming to TSG almost every day for a very long time, because I really learn a lot and enjoy reading the many posts, and the members who respond to them. I didn't include a copy of Hijack this because it did it on a fresh install.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIt all started when a friend gave me a 4 port USB Hub come clock and cup warmer!!! which I plugged into my pc. I plugged my printer into it, when I switched off the printer the system crashed to a BSOD. On reboot, as I remember, it came up with a splash screen I have never seen before (ASUS I think) then a BIOS set up page! I left the settings as they were and clicked ok, I think it was set to 700mhz. Since then it has been going to BSOD every time I switch off, or when I play Tiger Woods 2006 and go to save or move on to the next level of the game. It recently rebooted with the BIOS set up again which I changed to 933mhz hoping it was just that causing the problem!! Also when it reboots I get the voice telling me it has gone thru POST and booting from operating system. I have recorded stop errors from the last two crashes if it helps.

It has just crashed again on reboot, Windows started OK then when I clicked on the Avast anti virus update notice it went off....
I need your help. My EpoX motherboard sent me a new replacement MoBo. I've assembled
and returned everything and including my old BIOS setting. PC bootup win-xp ok BUT it
will not run continuously because hard drive LED stop. All program just stop
functioning after few minute of running. Cold boot has no effect except to Reset and
always did checking files on all drives. I deleted one Trojan Horse virus on popup
warning BUT couldn't completely scan the whole hard drive because AV program stop also.
I also tried in Safe Mode to clean-up AV, Spyware & Malware BUT not successful because
it stop also.
recently when having Internet Explorer open in the background, clicking on the desktop forces my
cursor to change to that horrible hour glass for about 20-30 seconds, then I get an error message saying "DrWatson postmortem debugger has encountered a problem and must close". I then proceed to click send error report. It sends then my computer freezes up and thats that. I have to manually restart it.
This has only happened recently and is becoming quite tedious. And also it does the same thing if I click dont send...
I know that DrWatson has something to do with saving files or recording the
script errors before the computer crashes (i think :s ) but thats where it
gets too complicated for me.

Lately, my XP has been freezing when I try to save pictures off the web. I never had this problem before. I tried using different folders in ''My Pictures'' and desktop but the result is the same. When I use Task Manager to view the performance, CPU usage shoots up to 100% while trying to save and doesn't come down. I should say that I have been using IE 7.0 beta for almost 3 months but it never gave me a problem before. I do not detect any other problems with the computer and am able to surf the net same as before. I just can't save the pictures.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOk I used to have ubuntu and xp partitioned to seperate drives on a single harddrive. I no longer wanted ubuntu so I ran my xp cd, deleted the ubuntu partition, and was left with half my drive(74gb) as unallocated space. So now i needed to figure out how to get that unallocated space back onto the xp partition. I didn't realize that you couldn't add unallocated space back to the xp partition with the xp boot cd. But i now know how to fix that problem. (Partition magic or whatever its called) Now when I turn on my computer without booting from the xp cd, it goes to the setup screen and says "The setup is being restarted". Then the screen goes completely black except for my mouse. Nothing else happens so I have to restart. When I boot with the CD I get the windows setup screen. It gives me 3 options: Set up Windows XP now
Repair Windows XP installation using Recovery Console and Exit setup without installing Windows XP I tried figuring out the recovery console just by using the help command, but no luck there. I did find out that my xp partition still is fine and has everything that it did before. But i just can't get it to start up.
I am running Windows XP, and a number of system upgrades were downloaded and being installed during shutdown. Unfortunately, the power got turned off partway through this, and now the computer won't boot up. I tried putting the Windows CD in to run a repair installation, but it still gets stuck.I get the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, but when I press a key there are two lines of text that appear and disappear too quickly for me to read them, and then it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, and doesn't do anything else.

View 14 Replies View RelatedIn the past, I have used the S-video port (with RCA adapter) in a dual view setup with my TV. I recently reinstalled Windows XP and now I can't get the secondary display (the TV) to work correctly. I just get a bunch of black & white lines moving up the screen (looks like bad reception/static on a TV). The weird thing is that the TV displays everything fine during the bootup process, including the loading screen with the Windows XP logo. Full color and everything. It's when Windows actually starts that the TV freaks out. Another weird thing is if I use nVidia's TV setup Wizard and select "Span," the image on the TV actually stabilizes. But I am forced to keep a low resolution on the monitor (which wasn't the case before I reinstalled XP), and as soon as I make any other changes the TV goes back to freaking out.

How many processes, maybe even what are they, or even how many MB do your process take up? I would make a poll but the poll only has 10 options. The problem started when i switched the case of the computer due to the power button beeing fauty. There has been no update of hardware apart from the case.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine asked me to look at his computer, after he was noticing a significant slow down in system processes etc. Its a 3 yr old Dell, 1.79gHz with a 30 gig HD and 256 megs of memory, running WinXP Home Edition. He never really knew much about computers, and as I discovered, he hadn't run his virus checker in almost 2 1/2 years, so that was certainly a dead giveaway that he was having problems.I managed to get AdAware and SpySweeper loaded onto it and ran them both, between the 2 programs I was able to wipe out a good majority of the cookies, the spyware and malware, however when I rebooted, the system immediately slowed down as soon as the desktop appeared and then ground to a halt entirely. The mouse moves, but that's it. I'm unable to Ctrl+Alt+Del, in order to shut it down I have to unplug the power cord, since it doesn't have a reset button.
I haven't yet been able to run HiJackThis! on the computer, I'm hoping running it in safe mode might afford me the ability to do that, but since I'm unable to decipher what it says, I'm going to be needing assistance on that level as well.
I am having problems updating Norton Antivirus 2005. Symantec says I need to having Acctmgr running upon Bootup. Using Msconfig, I do not have Acctmgr as an option to check in Startup and viewing Microsoft Services, I see nothing pertaining to Acctmgr I could check. Am using XP Home with SP 2 Installed. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW I CAN ACTIVATE ACCTMGR UPON BOOTUP?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded all of our pcs to SP2 (WinXP). Since then only some of the pc's exhibit issue. SVCHOST maxes at 100% for 5-10 minutes on bootup then resumes normalcy. I've narrowed it down to the Internet Connection Firewall causing the issue (if I kill it the prob. goes away). I need to have this enabled. (Besides, why is it only happening on some machines and not others?)
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I reboot my PC it takes a good 3 minutes to get from the "Welcome" screen to being ready to work with only 4 items on System Tray, volume, Sunbelt Vipre, Zone Alarm Firewall, and Win Patrol. The, "RECGUARD" isn't shown but is there also RECGUARD, Vipre, Win Patrol, and Zone Alarm is all that's present under msconfig Startup. I have ran CCleaner, Defrag, Disc Cleaner, and Registry Mechanic to no avail. Under, "Startup Programs" under, "System Information" there is one heckuva bunch of programs listed if that has any bearing on my problem, I can maybe do a Copy and Paste of the list if needed?

View 7 Replies View RelatedInstead of getting the graphical splash screen with the blue dots moving from left to right across the screen before the user login screen presents, I am able to select Linux and boot up properly there. Each OS is on its own hard disk. I had earlier saved off each MBR in case I ever had a problem with it. I have checked the MBR for the WinXP disk (i.e. the 0th (1st) sector) on the disk consisting of 512 bytes. It checked out OK with no binary differences, so I am confident that there is no problem with the WinXP MBR or the partitions in it. Obviously there is a problem after control is transferred from the WinXP MBR to bootup WinXP.My strategy now is going to be to run the bootcfg /rebuild command from the Recovery Console after checking out the boot list from the bootcfg command - if I can get that far with the Recovery Console.I do not seem to be able to get into Safe Mode or the Advanced Options screen selection by pressing on the F8 key. My boot.ini file was edited OK and had an extra line to boot into Safe Mode, but that does not work now.
So, my theory is that if all was working as before OK, I should be getting the selection to boot into Safe Mode vs normal bootup with the changes I made to the boot.ini file. Since I am not getting that and experiencing the problem as described above, I am assuming that something is out-of-kilter with the boot.ini file.Also, my last shutdown in the morning yesterday went Ok. What I was doing before I shutdown for lunch was shredding files - everything went OK with no apparent problems, but I wonder whether something went adrift without being noticed and corrupted some files on my system - notably, the boot.ini file - at least this is what I suspect.Anyone see a problem with what I have in mind to do or have a better idea how to fix this problem?
I tried upgrading my os to vista then decided I wasn't going to but ever since then I have been having problems with windows xp. When I boot up, I am given an option of choosing windows xp, or windows xp setup. I then have 3 situations:
1.If I choose windows xp my computer runs normally.
2.If I choose xp setup nothing happens I get a blank black screen.
3.If I do nothing I get a black screen that has one message, at the top it says windows is missing <windows root>system32hal.dll..How can I set my computer back to its normal state?
I am running windows xp home, sp3 on a Geteway desktop with a pentium 4. A while ago, after doing and un-doing a system restore, I am now getting and error message everytime I boot up. In front of a larget DOS window there is a smaller gray error window that is tiiled '16 bit MS-DOS subsystem'.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAs from a few days ago, the bootup speed of my PC has suddenly slowed to a crawl. it takes about 6 minutes for the bootup now, whereas before it had taken about 2 minutes.
I tried bootvis but it is not working properly and keeps coming up with errors.
Most XP Bootups take at the most 6 or 7 passes - passes being the number of times the progress bar runs on the bootup screen. But mine takes 12 - 16 passes I did have a problem with Gagp30kx.sys before but i have just reinstalled XP and it still takes 12 - 16 passes to bootup.

About a week ago, it locked up while I was surfing the web and when I rebooted, the bootup took about 15 minutes. the BIOS seems to be running (the "PowerSpec" logo appears on the monitor) but it remains like that for 10-15 minutes before it FINALLY goes into Windows. I'm thinking a virus? Maybe the BIOS is corrupt? It's been suggested that perhaps one of the memory sticks is bad. Another suggestion was that the hard drive (Seagate 250GB, IDE) may have a sector going bad. I bought a new drive (Maxtor 500GB) and one of the techs here at work cloned the Seagate drive but that didn't solve the problem

View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to run the Dell Diagnostics from my ResourceCD that came with my computer. I suspect a problem with my video card and I am trying to check it out. I've been trying the following steps but it doesn't work.
This is exactly what it says in my Dell Handbook:
1. Insert the resource CD.
2. Shut down and restart the computer. When the Dell logo appears, press F12 immediately.
3. When the boot device list appears, highlight IDE CD-ROM Device and press Enter. This is as far as I can get. When I select the CD-ROM to boot from, nothing happens and Windows loads normally.
4. Select the IDE CD-ROM Device option from the CD boot menu...........
