When I boot up and go into task manager my CPU is going like crazy at around 90% for about 5 minutes it finally boots up at around 7 minutes.I'm on windows xp home SP3, 80gb HDD, Intel Pentium Dual Core 1.73 ghz and my laptop is only 6 months old.Does anyone know a good programme to speed things up?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a PowerSpec Desktop PC. About a week ago, it locked up while I was surfing the web and when I rebooted, the bootup took about 15 minutes. the BIOS seems to be running (the "PowerSpec" logo appears on the monitor) but it remains like that for 10-15 minutes before it FINALLY goes into Windows. I'm thinking a virus? Maybe the BIOS is corrupt? It's been suggested that perhaps one of the memory sticks is bad. Another suggestion was that the hard drive (Seagate 250GB, IDE) may have a sector going bad. I bought a new drive (Maxtor 500GB) and one of the techs here at work cloned the Seagate drive but that didn't solve the problem
View 4 Replies View RelatedHave u seen what happens when u increase the Windows System Year from 2099.This was a nice and disturbing thing that I found out yesterday. Just go to the Windows Clock located on the bottom left corner of the screen and double click on it. Double clicking on it will bring up the Date and Time Properties Dialog Box. Now increase the Year field. Now the magic starts. The moment u cross 2099 the Year becomes 1980. So…â€.now what. As u can clearly see when the year 2099 comes (and ends) the next ear on Ur Windows calendar will become 1980. That is u r actually going back in time (hahaha…). As u can now have understood the implications can be manifold. U we staring at another Y2.1 scenario.Should not the Microsoft guys come out with a clarification for this glaring mistake?

I was told by my norton tech that the reason my computer was running slow was the rams. He said I should upgrade to 2 GB, but my computer only has two slots and the one it takes can't go higher than 256 so right now I have two 128 mb if I put in two 256 mb ram will it run faster, will it be worth it? It runs real slow, and has been cleaned up by the norton tech.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 160GB hard disk in which I have Windows XP installed in C drive(25GB). My E: drive is another primary partition(35GB). Rest of the partitions are made extended, in which F: (40GB), I40GB) are logical drives. The balance 20GB is a free space under the extended partition in which no logical drive is made. My system has become slow, because the system drive C: has very low amount free space available. So I thought of getting above 20GB free space to C: so that it would be 45GB overall. How can I expand C: drive? I have partition magic installed on my PC.

I also read that changing the start menu to classic would help, again I have the same question, would not the default be faster? It's all the small tweaks that added up make a bit of a difference.
View 14 Replies View RelatedA drop down window recently appeared stating that my computer was low on virtual memory and windows was going to increase it. I have never seen this message before. After conducting some research the site said the virtual memory should be at least 100MB. My computer shows the minimum at 384 and the maximum at 768. I don't know how much Windows increased the memory but should it be changed higher than 384?

Mail, everything is affected.

Whenever I burn an audio or (much longer) data disc, it typically takes a good 20 mins for my laptop. (specs in my bio)
This eve. my friend's desktop burned a data disc in less than 2 minutes! I was shocked.
HOW do I increase my burning speed?? His pc was a few GBs, would I need to increase mine (started off w/80, have 37.6 free GB left) or upgrade my RAM?

It worked to an extent Some, in fact the majority of files were recovered. However the problem remains in that not all files were recovered and NOW one file…when clicked on to gain access I am told that the drive is not formatted and would I like to format it now. Of course, I would not as the information is important. I enclose a copy of my previous letter to give you a full spectra of the saga.I am having problems with an external hard drive I purchased about a year ago. Files seem to be disappearing. I have a file which contained about 12gb of information (music files etc). The file now only has 88mb of information. It is the top part of the files but as you can see is only a raction of what it used to be. What has happened to the files? I have done a search in the drive…and no sign of them. Also, the system information does not register any

I re-installed one of my games that I used to play a year back and it tells me that I need 12MB of video memory for it to work. I had played this game on the same PC before one year ago, so I do not know why it is telling my PC now that it doesn't have sufficient video memory. Everything was running smoothly when I played the game a year ago.Has it got anything to do with the increasing number of files I downloaded or some of the programs I have installed over the year? How do I check how much video memory I am currently using? More importantly, how do I physically increase video memory?
