Remove Anything To Help Increase Bootup Performance?
Jan 17, 2005
On my laptop. For some reason, it takes 3-4 min once its at the Windows screen to get to the desktop.I ran HJT and didn't see anything abnormal, but since its the 1st time I used it, I figured I would post here and get some expert advice.Would like to see if I could safely remove anything to help increase bootup performance.
Does anybody have experience with Windows Lite? I have a lightweight laptop with limited 512mb ram running windows XP pro.To increase performance and slow boot up I was recommend download and install Windows Lite.
I'm running XP professional on a system with a 300Gb RAID 1/0 4 disk IDE array. I have mistakenly formatted it with FAT32. I have been told that I would get far better performance if it was NTFS.Would I get this performance increase by letting XP convert the FAT32 to NTFS or would I only get a major performance boost by reformatting with NTFS then reinstalling everything(something that I probably don't have time to do).I am using the space to store video clips and video image sequences.
Last access time stampsXP automatically updates the date and time stamp with information about the last time you accessed a file. Not only does it mark the file, but it also updates the directory the file is located in as well as any directories above it. If you have a large hard drive with many subdirectories on it, this updating can slow down your system. To disable the updating, start the Registry Editor by selecting Run from the Start menu, typing regedit in the Open text box, and clicking OK.
When the Registry Editor window opens, navigate through the left pane until you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControl SetControlFilesystemIn the right pane, look for the value named NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate. If the value exists, it's probably set to 0. To change the value, double-click it. You'll then see the Edit DWORD Value screen. Enter 1 in the Value Data field and click OK.If the value doesn't exist, you'll need to add it. Select New | DWORD Value from the Edit menu.
Have u seen what happens when u increase the Windows System Year from 2099.This was a nice and disturbing thing that I found out yesterday. Just go to the Windows Clock located on the bottom left corner of the screen and double click on it. Double clicking on it will bring up the Date and Time Properties Dialog Box. Now increase the Year field. Now the magic starts. The moment u cross 2099 the Year becomes 1980. So…â€.now what. As u can clearly see when the year 2099 comes (and ends) the next ear on Ur Windows calendar will become 1980. That is u r actually going back in time (hahaha…). As u can now have understood the implications can be manifold. U we staring at another Y2.1 scenario.Should not the Microsoft guys come out with a clarification for this glaring mistake?
Question to you all is what kinda of memory would I be looking for?Cause I have 256MB and im looking to increase that.. My desires is to improve my computer's speed and performance.. As I can NOT buy online, I would have to be buying memory at a store
I was told by my norton tech that the reason my computer was running slow was the rams. He said I should upgrade to 2 GB, but my computer only has two slots and the one it takes can't go higher than 256 so right now I have two 128 mb if I put in two 256 mb ram will it run faster, will it be worth it? It runs real slow, and has been cleaned up by the norton tech.
I have 160GB hard disk in which I have Windows XP installed in C drive(25GB). My E: drive is another primary partition(35GB). Rest of the partitions are made extended, in which F: (40GB), I40GB) are logical drives. The balance 20GB is a free space under the extended partition in which no logical drive is made. My system has become slow, because the system drive C: has very low amount free space available. So I thought of getting above 20GB free space to C: so that it would be 45GB overall. How can I expand C: drive? I have partition magic installed on my PC.
I have two partitions, Drive C and Drive D. My drive C is full but I have alot of memory on D. Can I increase the size of C by allocating the memory from D without formating my computer?
Is there a way to increase a partation on d: drive ?Now my c: drive are out of space.. so was thinking to move some hdd space from d: drive to c: drive
My system is running on windows xp 2nd edition(it is uptodate with all new updates installed),160HD,1GB Ram,i have an 256kbps broadband net connection.i want my xp to boot fast.
In my quest for XP tweaks to increase speed and boot up speed etc I read the other day that changing to Windows classic makes a difference in speed, but I was wondering if my system was XP then would not the XP theme not be faster as it would be the default? I also read that changing the start menu to classic would help, again I have the same question, would not the default be faster? It's all the small tweaks that added up make a bit of a difference.
A drop down window recently appeared stating that my computer was low on virtual memory and windows was going to increase it. I have never seen this message before. After conducting some research the site said the virtual memory should be at least 100MB. My computer shows the minimum at 384 and the maximum at 768. I don't know how much Windows increased the memory but should it be changed higher than 384?
How do I increase the size of my wallpaper. It appears as a little square when I turn on my computer. I am currently using a picture of Belveder Terrace in Central Park in NYC. I am using Windows XP
My wife is actually the computer whiz in the family, but she's out of town and I could use some help. We are running Win. XP. Our C drive is full and I was wondering if there's some way to extend the file size. There's not enough room to defrag (15% needed?). I've deleted some apps, but it's not enough. Mail, everything is affected.
Not so much a *problem* I'm having, but wondering how I can improve my set-up. Whenever I burn an audio or (much longer) data disc, it typically takes a good 20 mins for my laptop. (specs in my bio) This eve. my friend's desktop burned a data disc in less than 2 minutes! I was shocked. HOW do I increase my burning speed?? His pc was a few GBs, would I need to increase mine (started off w/80, have 37.6 free GB left) or upgrade my RAM?
I tried to increase the size of my C drive by deleting the D drive partition. The D drive was deleted but the C drive size appears the same. How can I now increase the size of the C drive to fully occupy the space that the D drive previously took up. I would like to end up with one large C drive and no partition.
I goto control panel look under mouse and want to change the size of the pointer on the mouse since my eyesight is getting poor. When I click on the dropdown menu it says NONE.How can I get it back so I can change the size of the pointer on the mouse?
I can change the font size of everything except the window text (see screenshot), i.e. the size of 'themes', 'desktop', 'windows and buttons', etc.Under Advanced, there seems to be no option to change the font size of window text. Is there a way to do this?
When I print anything off a web page I almost need a microscope to read the print. This is a sudden development - although I haven't installed anything new or made any changes recently.I can increase the font size on the screen OK, but whatever I print is still the same tiny sized printout on paper. Appreciate some help and advice as to how to make my printout readable
I had a problem with my external hard drive…which I informed you guys about. I was advised to solve the problem (potentially) using chkdsk on the drive. It worked to an extent Some, in fact the majority of files were recovered. However the problem remains in that not all files were recovered and NOW one file…when clicked on to gain access I am told that the drive is not formatted and would I like to format it now. Of course, I would not as the information is important. I enclose a copy of my previous letter to give you a full spectra of the saga.I am having problems with an external hard drive I purchased about a year ago. Files seem to be disappearing. I have a file which contained about 12gb of information (music files etc). The file now only has 88mb of information. It is the top part of the files but as you can see is only a raction of what it used to be. What has happened to the files? I have done a search in the drive…and no sign of them. Also, the system information does not register any increase on the ‘free space’ of the drive. I am at a loss. What is happening? Can I retrieve the files? It is really punishing to think that they may be lost to me for good.
I re-installed one of my games that I used to play a year back and it tells me that I need 12MB of video memory for it to work. I had played this game on the same PC before one year ago, so I do not know why it is telling my PC now that it doesn't have sufficient video memory. Everything was running smoothly when I played the game a year ago.Has it got anything to do with the increasing number of files I downloaded or some of the programs I have installed over the year? How do I check how much video memory I am currently using? More importantly, how do I physically increase video memory?
Win 98 is installed on C drive. XP Pro. in on D drive. Now free space on D drive is very little i.e. 915 MB only. and there is more free space in Drive C. How can I allot free space to D drive from C without formating my computer.
My son likes to play around with the sound recorder on my computer. For some reason it has quit working. It says not enough memory to complete this operation. Quit one or more application to increase available memory and try again.
My computer has an EXTREMELY small Hard Disk and I want to make the most out of it.I have ran CCleaner many times, removed a few programs that I dont need/want and deleted some music & photos that I dont need/want. But I ran disk cleanup the other day and I really didn't bother cleaning up anything because 1MB wasn't worth it. Ecept I clicked on the More Options tab and I discovered I can free more space by removing all but the most recent restore point. So i did this and i was pleasantly surprised with my results.
