Trying to install DSL, I get a message that the IP address cannot be located. I called Dell and they say that it is a software issue so it's Microsoft's problem. Microsoft says that since the software was installed on the computer when we bought it, it's Dell's problem.

I am running xp pro. I can not get an internet connection through my ethernet card. When I hook up my modem through usb it works fine but unable to utilize my full download speed capabilities. Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange.

So I pressed home button of my key board so the My Computer window converted to a web page. But after that the address bar disappeared. I closed the window and restart the machine and opened the internet explorer, but still address bar is missing. I checked under the tools and I can see the tick infront of the address bar.

After we install Windows updates, Windows assigns an APIPA address in the 169.254.x.x range, instead of getting an address from the DHCP server. The effect is that the computer loses connectivity with the network and the Internet. You can confirm this problem by running an IPCONFIG and checking for an address in the 169.254 range.
Releasing and renewing the address does not correct the problem. Assigning a static IP address resolved the issue. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, we found a registry hack that will disable APIPA addressing on the computer, and this does correct the problem so the computer can connect to the network again. We assume that the problem is a result of an update from last Tuesday, but we have not determined which update is the problem. We are still looking. Our concern is that as DHCP leases expire with computers in the field, that this effect may appear. If you get calls for loss of network or Internet connectivity, have the user run IPCONFIG, and if they have an APIPA address, the registry hack is outlined in KB article
I am using Windows XP Home edition. How do you delete an address from the list of automatic webb address list in the Address box? I tried highlighting it and entering delete but it doesn't get deleted.

View 10 Replies View RelatedNormally it connects to Orange BroadBand (ex Wanadoo, ex Freeserve) using its ADSL Speedtouch modem but while it's on my network I'm wanting it to use my network connection.However I try,any attempt to browse the iNet is met with it trying to connect via its dialup ADSL connection I've got connection settings to say don't bother).ipconfig /all reveals exactly what I'd expect for the LAN connection, DNS server is fine, etc. and I can ping an IP address but when I try to ping a hostname it says it doesn't know anything about that name, i.e. it's not managing to get the IP address from the DNS servers (I've also tried specifying other servers).

My toolbar has also reverted to what looks like an older version. I run on xp and I have internet explorer 7. I have run virus scans and stuff already. I have also done some research, but most explanations for my problem are full of techno-lingo. However, I have tried running ipconfig but that hasn't worked. If anyone could offer some step by step instructions, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not that good with computers but I know some stuff. Now I can't find my taskbar at the bottom and I can't go online.I made a full system back up a few days ago.If I can restore this file(s), I think there were three of them, I think I get my computer to work properly again.The problem is where are these files located? A pc has been cursed with dllhell, so please suggest any ideas/solutions.
Before xp pro has finished booting (which takes ages anyway) the following message appears:-
'the ordinal 6663 could not be located in dll mfc42.dll' (related to launapp)
A possibly related issue to this is that some strange things happen with the system (windows explorer crashes and restarts if some programs are opened, or if I access the external usb disc drive. It makes sense to deal with one problem at a time.
I hear alot of people saying to use Microsoft Knowledge Base to find most of my answers, but they do not tell where I have to go to find it.

I would like to be able to copy and paste all of my "spam rules" from my computer onto the system of other family members using a USB storage device.
