Recall some members being concerned about Storing Windows Updates for subsequent installations and the related MS CD having been discontinued. Ran across this and thought I'd pass it along.
Storing Windows Updates for subsequent installations (or order CD)
We are connecting Windows XP-Pro and Windows 2K to a Remote Desktop (via Netmotion) and everything is working fine except we cannot print locally. We have enabled the local printing & ports from the Remote Desktop options. There are no firewalls interferring. I can ping the local machine from the Remote Desktop.

I have then setup up so new accounts but they do not work,A new message appears saying it will now log me onto a Temporay Account.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI really need some help here. Whatever my wife did, basically her pc running XP would not boot after the Dell logo screen. Using the XP recovery disk she managed to install another copy of XP on drive C. The system only shows 1 drive (C). The newest install is the install that works, but the old non-working installation is where all of her family pics and work files are located. To make matters worse, the original installation had 2 admin users. Herself, and one for the kids; both password protected. The newest install is in "C:Windows1" and of course the old one is just plain "C:Windows". I can see the folder that contains her files and the other folder for my kids, but I can't access them...says "Access denied". Does anybody know how I can get those files and pics out of there and fix this mess? I wouldn't mind having to reinstall the MS Office and stuff like that, but she really needs those files.

hope someone can help me! I have windows XP and a while ago IE stopped being able to download, i have resolved that by reinstalling IE, however about the same time my windows update installations were failing and i thought it was because of my download problem in IE however now IE is fixed but i still cannot install windows updates.Before anyone tells me to go into tools, options, security blah blah, i have done that already but it has not resolved the problem. The error message i get is just a box that says updates were unable to be successfully installed then a list of the updates it was unable to install, but no reason for the error or number is given.

I am having that problem too.Running sfc /scannow does not fix the problem.I have removed all traces of the installation but continue to find that the file is corrupt, however,it does allow me to view flash files on the Internet.So here is a screen shot of what is said during the removal of the file in the Download Programs Folder in internet explorer 6.Note: I don't like internet explorer 7, it corrupts my HP scanjet 2300 driver. I also like Internet Explorer 6's larger navigation buttons on the tool bar.Though I am a Power User, this one has me stumped. I am sure the error message in this screen shot will allow the techies.

Trouble is, I cannot see it in my add/remove list. does auto updates only download security updates and I assume I dont have to do anything.

1) I can't access the Firewall or Windows Update features
2) Sometimes when I'm trying to install software, I get a message that says "This operation was cancelled due to restrictions in place on your computer. Please contact a network administrator" or something like that.
I have access to regedit (after a bit of work) and have been able to win back some of my privileges. However, I can't seem to find the right restrictions to apply to the above issues. editing policies in gpedit does not do anything! None of the policies take effect. Does anyone know how to remedy this?

The "installed" 80GB HD has had it's boot sector scrambled and will no longer boot up. I installed a second 20GB HD from a previous HP computer that I now have up and running with Win XP Home. I want to reformat the 80GB HD and would like to temporarily store data from this drive onto the 20GB HD. The main concern I have is that the larger drive is formated in NTSF and the smaller in FAT32.
Questions:
#1 Can I store the NTSF data on the FAT32 drive just to keep it protected with only the intent to transfer it back to the 80GB HD after reformating?
How to store all Windows, Office and program settings on a removable USB HDD, so I would be able to work with the same settings on two Windows XP with the removable USB HDD connected?

It is set for console, is this some sort of default and can I change it? Do I have to change it here or is there a control panel somewhere that handles this setting? I first looked in the System control panel, under Environment Variables but didn't see it there at all. I want to set this to the machine name cause I have a number of identical systems and they are currently all set the same, I'd like them unique.

But, it is formatted at FAT32 and I can't put a file on there that is over 4GB. So, I tried to convert the drive to NTFS, but Windows won't let me do this. It keeps telling me the disk is dirty and to run chkdsk / f. Which I have done and completes fine finding no problems on the drive. Yet convert e: /fs:NTFS still does not convert the drive reporting it is dirty. What is causing this and how do I fix it? I have tons of data on the drive so I can't re-partition it as I don't want to loose that data. I need to convert it to NTFS.

My question was if it would be safe to put these word files on a flash drive, or even connect my flash drive, and then put those files on the new installation. i also had nod 32 installed. should i scan the files with that before? and should i boot it in safe mode before doing the transfer?

don't work... why ? Latest case is with the NVIDA update - I can't go beyond 4bit 640x480.
Is there a way to disable Windows Automatic Updates from updating device drivers. There are a several PC's at my job that have problems with a device driver update from. I would still like to recieve regular security updates, but I dont want any device driver updates.
