Start Menu - Toolbar Freeze For Long Periods

Nov 19, 2008

Sometimes when I click my start button it freezes the whole toolbar, this doesn't make sense as I have a reasonably powerful machine (check specs) and when I check task manager my cpu usage is at 2-4% and I have less then 20 processes running taking up 200,000k or less. I once had a virus on my computer but I followed the steps, removed it and formatted my hdd then reinstalled fresh windows xp pro and now this issue has come up. Just recently (after the problem appeared) I tried going to run regedt32 Hkey_Current_usercontrol paneldesktopMenuShowDelay and lowered that to 0 in a hope of reducing freezes but I haven't seen any difference.

Taskbar And Start Toolbar Menu

Jan 30, 2005

When I right click on the start button and when the menu appears some options have been added to the menu. I would like to delete these and add a few commands of my own, but I can't seem to find where to do this anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Clicking Turn Off Computer In Start Menu Takes To Long

Feb 25, 2008

After I click "Turn off computer" in the start menu, I get an hourglass and it takes over a minute for the Turn off/restart/log off box to come up. Anyone know why this is happening? I can still work with the computer and do other stuff, but it just takes a while for the box to come up. It's really annoying.

Shutdown Hang/freeze Up While Clicking "Turn Off Computer" From Start Menu?

Jul 9, 2008

well, this problem started a little while ago, Ive got a 2.93ghz P4, and 1GB memory, so i know my computer is (plenty) fast enough.when i click on the button in the start menu "Turn Off Computer", my PC shows the hourglass, and i cant click on anything, this will go on for about a minute or 2, once it took 5 minutes. then the small box with shutdown options comes up finally, and then after the light blue screen gets to "Shutting Down...". it takes maybe a bit longer than expected but im not to sure about that.

Such as Quick Launch.Others of these toolbar names are not ticked and are not visible. Such as Address, Links, Desktop Manager, Google Desktop, and Windows Media Player. How can I ADD or REMOVE entries in this menu of toolbar names?

ToolBar - Access Start Menue

Jan 31, 2008

This Problem occured about 3 weeks ago. All of a sudden when I boot up my Pc my toolbar works alright for about 10 or so minutes but after that the toolbar locks up. I can't access my "start" menu or anything I "minimize". What is far more worse is I can't load programs when this is happening. Sometimes though the computer "gives" and allows me to load things i want to for a few seconds but then it locks up again. So basically whatever is already loaded I can use but when this happends I can't load any programs,go to my start menu or basically ANYTHING. SoWhat should I do? Btw I cleaned out my PC thinking it was dust but I found out I was wrong.

Start Menu/Programs Fly Out Menu List

Jul 28, 2005

I am using Windows XP/SP2 a newish computer and some things changed from how it used to be.From the *Start* Button, there is the further button *Programs*. This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.

Start System Log In Screen Freeze

Sep 13, 2008

this problem for a while now and ive been trying everything i can think off. Basically when i start the computer up the windows login screen freezes. I have to press ctrl + alt + delete to get the login box to come up, and i can login that way. That's fine just a bit annoying . Secondly, When i look through my files in windows, even click a file on desktop or browse the internet, the taskbar and my desktop will freeze. I can move my mouse, but cant click anything, icons, start menu, right click - nothing. To get it back i bring up task manager and close it, then i can click the taskbar etc, i have no idea why that works i dont close explorer.exe or anything . I've ran anti-virus scans with avast and nod32 (i only have avast installed), anti-spyware scans with Spybot and superantispyware and nothing was found. I've disabled startup programs with msconfig, defragmented and updated video card drivers. but it still freezes. Specs are beside my forum name, and im using xp home.

Noise During The Start Up And Freeze The Computer

Mar 26, 2008

I am having a problem that just started about 2 days ago. My computer, XP home edn., will be working fine, and then I suddenly hear a little squeak coming from the computer, kinda like something being pulled over a pulley and then bang, the whole thing just freezes up on me.So I'll hold the power button to shut it down, start it back up again and sometimes it'll come right back up, like normal. Other times, it'll make that noise again during the start up and it'll just freeze at whatever screen it's at. I just took it in yesterday b/c at the start up screen it was saying something like cannot boot from CD. insert system CD when it was at the very start, saying how much memory and system, etc.The guy said something was just loose, fixed it, and then it worked fine. But it just started up again, with the whole squeak-freeze deal.

Programs Will Not Start Even Though Desktop Icons & Start Menu Appear

Jun 5, 2008

I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

Start Up Freeze - Power Off Goes Back To Check Disk

Jan 3, 2008

Windows XP Media Edition and here's my problem. I told XP to use the CHKDSK utility on startup, but whenever it reaches step 4 37%, it just freezes and I'm forced to restart the computer. When I restart, the same thing happens. Is there any shortcut to bypass the CHKDSK? This all started because whenever I ran a full virus scan or spyware scan I would get a BSOD In_Page_Kernel_Error... So i tried running them in safe mode and then I would get a IQL BSOD. Eventually I decided I should try to run CHKDSK and it has lead me to this dead end. If I could just figure out a shortcut to bypass it, I would be happy because the computer actually works fine, I just suspected spyware so that's why I began attempting to disinfect it.

Change Hard Drive - Upgrading Start Up Freeze Up

Oct 18, 2005

I am priarily a Mac user, I do grahic & web design etc. I recently bought a cheap older PC to use for validating my work on the Windows platform. The computer came with 98, I need XP on it. I got XP installed (had to change the hard drive ribbon to an 80 wire ribbon) but now when it starts up, it freezes up after a few seconds. Before opening IE or doing anything. The computer has 64 MB RAM, which I would be upgrading if I thought this computer is worth putting any $$ at all into - 64 is supposed to meet the minimum requirements for XP so although I expect it to be molasses slow I do expect it to run the system software. I have it hooked up to a Samsung LCD screen (onboard graphics card - Compaq board) and Windows keyboard and USB mouse.

Also, the computer ran fine under 98 (tested it for a bit when I got it, and previous owner is a friend who swears there were no problems under 98). I don't get blue screen or anything, computer just totally freezes and doesn't respond. When I restart it goes through proper verification and then starts up, freezes again. So, I have no idea wher to start - hardware issue? Software issue?

Computer Freezes For Short Periods

Jul 30, 2005

Many thanks for your very helpful forum-I have learned a lot by reading
the comments.I have already downloaded Ewido,Adaware and run them to clear out spyware, adware and odd bits of Trojans that were not totally cleared before. Now
when I run the two programs all I get are tracking cookies.Still my computer
locks up for a minute or so at times, especially when I click on a new window. For a while I put it down to the amount of programs etc I had on my computer. However after clearing out some thing like 245k of programs, junketc etc,the computer still hangs for a while.I have installed more ram memory and run Xram pro to give me back more ram when I run short as some of the windows programs seem to eat up myram especially iexplorer and the longer I run my pc the more it uses.{I knowwindows will give me extra memory when things are critical, but I often needa boost in ram when I am running a webconferencing program].

Periods Of Hihg Disk - I/O Counts

Sep 8, 2005

the problem also happened before SP2 was installed. Frequently [i.e. 2-3 times an hour when I am using the system] and even occasionally when the machine is in StandBy [!] the disk starts cranking away full bore [i.e. the disk light is on almost constantly and it sounds really REALLY busy] for 2-3 minutes ... then it seems to start slowing down and eventually becomes quiet. I don't have a clue what is going on. When I bring up Windows Task Manager and look at the Processes tab I see a couple of entries whose I/O counts are changing a little bit [maybe 3-4 reads and/or writes a second] but nothing shows the huge counts that I think are going on based on the noise I hear from the drive. When it is in this frantic disk mode just about anything else that I might be trying to do comes to a standstill

Computer Appears Locked: CPU Runs At 100% For Lengthy Periods With No Program Running

Aug 27, 2006

Using a Toshiba Satellite 1800 Laptop 1GHz Intel P3 - BIOS Ver 1.90 04/18/2002.

The past week or two it seems that the computer locks up, the Task Manager shows the CPU running at 100%. It allows some activity all be it slow & shutting down all programs (which are not locked up) does not stop the activity - including disconnecting the internet. Have run Norton scan, Spybot S&D and Adaware with nothing of significance found. Ran HiJackThis and found some startup stuff and stopped them from running but I don't know enough about the programs that are running to remove them.

Last time I booted I had to force a shutdown after waiting for 15 minutes. Next reboot took 22 minutes for the CPU to back off of 100%. I started Task Mgr very early into the boot, just before the icons started to appear and it showed 33 processes running. I watched as 14 more started up all while the CPU was steady at 100% usage. Then at 5 minutes after booting the processor dropped to 50% bounced around for a minute then went back to 100%. There was some activity through the modem (cable) but not very much. I unplugged the modem power. I shut down Skype, MSN Messenger and MS Defender and about a minute later the CPU dropped to 27%. Nothing of what I shut down appeared to alter anything.

I hope someone can see something...

Here is my latest HiJackThis log

Switch User Freeze - Favorites Freeze

Jun 12, 2005

This place is quite active, and I am glad to see that. I own a Dell 4600
Demension computer, it was purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently
reinstalled Windows on it, and reinstalled the drivers/utilities that were
needed, with the help of a Dell expert. I have Windows XP Home Edition right now. I have the Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE for my spyware protection, and I have the AVG from
Grifsoft for my virus protection. I scan my computer every night, and I keep
all my databases up-to-date. Recently, my computer was infected with the
Trojan Backdoor.SdBot virus, and I looked on the Norton Antiviruses website
to get rid of it and fix the computer. So now, at this time, I believe my
computer is clean.
