Spasmodic Crashes / Looking For Free Bug Finder Utility
May 17, 2005
I am having some trouble with Windows XP prof. My computer periodically freezes and I have to log off using the task manager. Or I get the error: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. And the screen goes blank except the wallpaper, then the task bar and icons come back. In this case most applications are still running, though things disappear from the system tray. This kind of thing happens every few days, but the computer seems to stutter and redraw the icons quite often during the day.I defragmented the disk, which seems to have helped. But I think this is the kind of irritating problem that occurs after a few years. Does anyone know of a good free windows bug finder that might help?
got a issue with my parents PC - they tried to install Service Pack 2 and it killed their PC. - i have tried uninstalling SP2 from the recovery console to no avail - it will not boot in safe mode or normal mode - saying that it has shut down the system because "winsrv" was not found - i want to do a complete reload anyway BUT i can not find the XP CD key that they bought - they thought it was not important and threw it out and the fact i cant get into windows at all means i cant use the magic jellybean key finder - is there a (free) keyfinder that can boot off a floppy or CD? cause i dont think my parents want to buy a 2nd copy of XP
I know how most of you feel about duplicate file finders they are really not safe and it is best to just leave duplicate files alone.I somewhat agree, however,I would really like to try a really good and safe duplicate file finder that is " relative safe " in your opinion. I was thinking of a color coded program perhaps that maybe had ' green ' or some other color as SAFE to delete.
On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?
I am confused, but I will describe this best I can: explorer.exe crashes when viewing folders or anything built on explorer.exe (I guess) at exactly 11 seconds in on them. It also randomly crashes every couple hours. Im extremely confused by all this
I started getting browser and sometimes PC crashes. At first it seemed to be browser related. But the PC would also crash when idle. I tried disabling add- ons in Firefox and opening in safe mode. Tried using Chrome but it would crash with the message that Flash had malfunctioned. Then I started getting Stop messages and BSODs.I hadn't installed and new hardware and, I don't think, installed any new big programs except for updates to existing ones.
I emailed a few of the mini dump files to a friend. He said they didn't specify which drivers were causing the problem. But it might be something to do with the video or the network card. I rolled back drivers. No change. I updated drivers and uninstalled lots of programs. For a month everything seemed stable. Then the BSODs started to return. Infrequently at first but then more regularily. Sorry the story is a bit confused but it is difficult to remember every detail of what happened and the order I did things in.
I have a client that for some reason AVG will not update except manually going to the grisoft site and downloading the update. I have tried every thing including installing from a CD, Installing from the Grisoft website, updating manually, and for some reason the AVG update manager will not work. Can someone recommend another Free Antivirus that is as easy to use and as automatic as AVG is, that I can install on her computer. This is an elderly woman that needs things as simple as possible. She can be taught to follow prompts but I would like to keep things as easy as possible. for example I send her emails regularly to remind her to run Adaware and Spybot,
does anybody know why i have 1.10 GB free space in Safe Mode and 804 MB free space in Normal? thanks. and i know that 804 MB free space isnt alot, this is a pretty small harddrive from what the computer says it is .
Other than the 3 computers in my signature, (If you count the PPC), I have another, older, Desktop. A Dell Dimesnion. P II 387 Mhz, 97 MB RAM, 8 MB Video It is running Windows XP. I have all the visual displays turned doen and it is adjusted for best performance
I currently have 13.0 GB of used space and 5.58 GB of free space. I would like to get more free space. My computer is about 2 years old. In those two years, I had to re-install Windows XP and everything else on my computer...for reasons unknown...I recently performed a New Installation of Windows XP on my computer. I don't have alot of things installed on my computer. The total space all the programs in my Add and Remove programs file takes up is only 1GB. Since I had to start over and re-install everything and my programs only add up to 1GB, Shouldn't I have more free space ?

I am presently using TuneUp Utilities 2006 but after about 4 years of installing and uninstalling many programs, my computer runs like a "slug". The TuneUp Utlitiities 2006 has help but the computer is still ridiculously slow.

i tried to run it under SAFE mode in case some app might be restricting it from functioning but to no use i even replaced the utility with the original one from my installation disk but even that didn't work out. but it seems theres some problem with the utility itself because i downloaded a 3rd party pinging utility and it worked just fine!
note: i have tested my firewall and antivirus options..they r not interfering.
When booting up, the Sys Config Util comes up with the usual canned statement. He has not made any changes. Clicks Don't show this again then clicks OK. Reboots and again it comes up. He is the only user and administrator.
I've been ransacking XP for a backup utility, but apparently they didn't include it on the XP that came with my computer. Do I have to buy this capability? I've been a Windows user since 3.1 (remember?), and all previous versions had this utility included.
I used windows backup, all programs>accessories>system tools>backup, and made a complete copy of my system. How to load these files up without loging on?
Have tried for months to get my backup utility to allow me to make a backup of my system and it Will not allow me to do so.Still unable to use the backup utility, it gives me a specific message. The backup file name could not be used."E:2505.bkf" Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access.I have tried other names for the file and none has ever worked, I have tried this since the backup utility was installed, I also uninstalled the utility and reinstalled it, made no difference.I could use some suggestions on how to get this utility to work.I have installed this utility twice, from the addons disc for the Xp operating system disc that came with my Compaq.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1200! Before whenever I wanted to do a manufacturer restore (make it brand new like) I pressed CTRL+F11 and it would start a program by Symantec! A restore program! It would restore my computer to totaly brand new state. Like I just took it out of the box! Now I need to make it brand new like again, and me pressing CTRL+F11 does not start it no more! Skips it, like I never pressed it! I need to do a restore again and I can't! how to get it back up? How to make it work? Anybody knows exactly what do I need to do? May be some other program I can load up?
when I went to MISCONFIG/System Config Utility, under the startup items, there are a lot of items, but few, if any, of the items I, in fact, have in my startup. My items still startup when I boot, but the list is not in Sys Conf Utility!
What happened to them? How do I get my working startup items bacK? I recently installed Process Explorer, a program which I found of no use to me. I have uninstalled it, and still the problem persists.
In my "services" tab in my "system configuration utility" accessed via 'msconfig', I count about 75 entries all of them checked. Now, I know there a some of them that I need. example: "AVG Update Service". But there are many most, in fact that I haven't a clue about what they do or if I really need them. For example: "Cryptographic Services". What in hell is that? What I'd like to do is disable all the stuff that I don't really need, so that I'm not wasting resources. Thanks for any help anybody can give. If you really come through, another donation will be on the way
As part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?
Just clean installed XP for the 3rd flippin time in 4 months. Before I load any programs onto the PC. I would welcome any advise as to recovery programs, utility and back up programs etc. that would be a help down the road in case of trouble. Also a recommendation for a good AV program. I used the free Grisoft AVG program last time around and it created some conflicts for me. I also have a firelight 40 g external HD I can use.
I am having some problems with a Asus A7V266-E. It recently had a new hard drive put in and after that it froze and whouldn't even show anything on the moniter. Since then I have reset the CDCTRL or something beside the motherboard battery. I have gotten the bios to recognize the hard drive now and have actually been able to install and run windows from it. Upon boot right after the "Energy" screen it says "Fast Trak "lite" Bios ver. 1.31 (Build 24) Scanning IDE Drives. and after that and hitting "Ctrl + F" as it says to do In the FastBuild it says there is no disk found and does not let me change anything withing since after hitting any key it reboots the system. If "Cltr + F" isn't hit it will eventually load into windows. Please help me, I'd like to know how to fix the problem of the Fastbuild not thinking there is a HD and slowing the booting process down that much.
When I try to run Disk Cleanup, the message comes up, "Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space." but the progress bar is frozen at about 10% and nothing happens. How do I unfreeze it so the utility will run?
When using the Disk Cleanup, if you never want to "Compress Old Files" (which is often annoying and takes a long time) follow this tip: Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesCompress Old FilesOn the Edit menu, click Export, in case you change your mind.On the Edit menu again now click Delete. i realised my pc cannot resume from a standby or hibernate. it shows a BSOD. some kernel inpage error. i surfed several forums about it.they say to run dskchk. but i cant use any of hard disk utilities. dskchk doesnt find my drives. i installed HD tune. it says no disks were found. i thought maybe somethin is wrong wid OS.. so tried a reinstall. but even it cant find my partitions. so i cant even format my pc now.. i can open & use my drives perfectly from my computer but problem is with disk utilities... Disk management doesnt show any of my partitins, it only shows my dvd drive. disk defragment shows them but cannot defrag. so i cannot defrag, scan for errors, format any of my drives. at one forum sum1 mentioned trojan remover can fix this... i installed it & started scan.. but it detects my system files as malicious & asks for action. but i aborted the scan cuz i'm afraid if it deletes or excludes sytem critical files i wont be able to boot & neither i can reinstall OS. so there is very much chance of data loss.
