I have a Dell Inspiron 1200! Before whenever I wanted to do a manufacturer restore (make it brand new like) I pressed CTRL+F11 and it would start a program by Symantec! A restore program! It would restore my computer to totaly brand new state. Like I just took it out of the box! Now I need to make it brand new like again, and me pressing CTRL+F11 does not start it no more! Skips it, like I never pressed it! I need to do a restore again and I can't! how to get it back up? How to make it work? Anybody knows exactly what do I need to do? May be some other program I can load up?
Was wanting to know, as I have come across many who know, but what is the best way to remove entries from the start up folder in system conf. utility ? Have some entries I know belong to programs that no longer are hanging around .
Small irritating issue here, I have a pc running WindowsXP Pro and every time the system is rebooted I get the System Configuration Utility box come up, the one saying, "You have used the System Config Utility to make changes to the way windows starts.etc." I have seen this before and am use to it as I use the utility to stop alot of apps. The difference this time is that I cannot get the box from appearing after each startup. I have checked the box that says "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows starts", but it shows up every time. I have also tried to remove this from the registry.
im looking at the startup list here and i see that i have a blank. the start up item column is blank and the command column is blank, the location is specified but it has a... so i really cant see what it is. what could this be, adware, spyware?
When I boot up I get the following message after the desktop initializes:""You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts. The system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or start up mode, causing this message to be displayed every time windows starts up.Choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using the system configuration utility.""
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.
On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?
download from msn and in 2 days 8 viruis and many registery problems have got rid of all by running spydoctor . registy meachine ,avg .ntl netguard. the main viruis was backdoor jcb but now my windows firewall turns off after every restart and so dose system restore i have tryed to install a new firewall spygate but this will not start up after i download it i did put in a new cd-rw drive a couple of weeks ago but thats been fine
I have a Toshiba sat pro 6000 running XP pro which was pre installed, so no discs.Last night I downloaded an upgrade of kapersky and when it asked me to reboot laptop the following happened.A black screen appeared asking if I wanted to start in safe mode and a list of other options, I chose safe mode and the screen filled up with a long list about multi disks partition , windows driver etc.So I closed down and then chose start windows normally from the black page and it then progressed on to scanning the disc which is does. It reports there are no problems and then opens up the black page again, and again and again.I have pressed F8 and I chose disable auto start up and a blue screen came up telling me of a possible problem and to use recovery cd which I don't have. Can anyone advise on how I can start windows so that I can eliminate kapersky or do a system restore.
I can still use system restore; but my problem is I can't seem to locate system restore on the start menu, I know that it used to be there. Is there any way to put the icon back on the start menu? Running Window XP Home Edition.
I keep getting this message: "wmi has encountered a problem and needs to close." I've tried everything I can think of to get rid of it including:1. System Restore to a previous point2. Stopped Windows Management Instrumentation service and set it to MANUAL star 3. Stopped Windows Performance Adapter service and set it to MANUAL start4. Searched registry for entries that could/should be deleted (didn't find the ones I expected to see.)5. General cleanups including Registry Mechanic detect and repair. Norton Antivirus scan. Microsoft AntiSpyware scan / repair. Spybot Search and destroy scan / fix. Spyware Blaster update and enable all protection.
Probably once a day my PC will shut off and then restart. I really need this PC to be reliable and stay up.I have tried a memory test to see if it was that and it came up ok. I was also told it could be to do with drivers for hardware. If anyone could give me some advice I would REALLY appreciate it.
I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues. Currently, I have the following issues to contend with: System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart. The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process. Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.
im having this two problems.search option in start menu is not functioning as well as my system restore.i wasnt able to fully explain in words so ive decided to attach it.
I deleted a few items from Start Menu>Programs that I would like to restore. These items are (1) set program access and defaults (2) windows catalog and (3) windows update. I don't know where the .exe files are for me to copy back into the start menu folder or if there is a easier way to restore them.

I am presently using TuneUp Utilities 2006 but after about 4 years of installing and uninstalling many programs, my computer runs like a "slug". The TuneUp Utlitiities 2006 has help but the computer is still ridiculously slow.

i tried to run it under SAFE mode in case some app might be restricting it from functioning but to no use i even replaced the utility with the original one from my installation disk but even that didn't work out. but it seems theres some problem with the utility itself because i downloaded a 3rd party pinging utility and it worked just fine!
note: i have tested my firewall and antivirus options..they r not interfering.
When booting up, the Sys Config Util comes up with the usual canned statement. He has not made any changes. Clicks Don't show this again then clicks OK. Reboots and again it comes up. He is the only user and administrator.
I've been ransacking XP for a backup utility, but apparently they didn't include it on the XP that came with my computer. Do I have to buy this capability? I've been a Windows user since 3.1 (remember?), and all previous versions had this utility included.
I used windows backup, all programs>accessories>system tools>backup, and made a complete copy of my system. How to load these files up without loging on?
Have tried for months to get my backup utility to allow me to make a backup of my system and it Will not allow me to do so.Still unable to use the backup utility, it gives me a specific message. The backup file name could not be used."E:2505.bkf" Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access.I have tried other names for the file and none has ever worked, I have tried this since the backup utility was installed, I also uninstalled the utility and reinstalled it, made no difference.I could use some suggestions on how to get this utility to work.I have installed this utility twice, from the addons disc for the Xp operating system disc that came with my Compaq.
I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore
when I went to MISCONFIG/System Config Utility, under the startup items, there are a lot of items, but few, if any, of the items I, in fact, have in my startup. My items still startup when I boot, but the list is not in Sys Conf Utility!
What happened to them? How do I get my working startup items bacK? I recently installed Process Explorer, a program which I found of no use to me. I have uninstalled it, and still the problem persists.
In my "services" tab in my "system configuration utility" accessed via 'msconfig', I count about 75 entries all of them checked. Now, I know there a some of them that I need. example: "AVG Update Service". But there are many most, in fact that I haven't a clue about what they do or if I really need them. For example: "Cryptographic Services". What in hell is that? What I'd like to do is disable all the stuff that I don't really need, so that I'm not wasting resources. Thanks for any help anybody can give. If you really come through, another donation will be on the way
As part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?
