View 5 RepliesHave XP, service pack 2, and all updates. Use Norton, MS Antispyware, Adaware, Spybot, and weekly check with online virus check programs. Machine is clean (I hope). Have 2 user accounts on the machine. Had email issues with the ISP and got resovled/ I could open Outlook Express from my user account, but then my wife's user account wouldn't open Outlook Express at all. Thought I would try in Safe Mode to see if maybe some other program was interfering. NOTE: I did no harware or software change. Went to msconfig, and clicked on Safeboot.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to start my computer in safe mode through msconfig because pressing F8 at startup doesn't seem to work although I am missing the BOOT.INI tab.

View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically I need to start my computer normally without system config utility running on startup,With "normal startup" selected in msconfig, /SAFEBOOT (minimal) in BOOT.INI checks itself. When I uncheck /SAFEBOOT it changes to a "selective startup" with a modified BOOT.INI. I need to return my BOOT.INI to how it was originally with the unchecked /SAFEBOOT so that I can do a completely normal startup. I cant do a system restore cos there are no restore points past a couple of days ago due to low disk space I think.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" / fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /safeboot:minimal
Title says it all. Not sure when it actually disappeared. Noticed it while studying for A+ exam today. Here is what I have tried that hasn't worked:
(1) Missing BOOT.INI file. It is there.
(2) Registry corruption. Nope. The entry doesn't appear in the expected location.
(3) Improper permissions set on BOOT.INI. Nope. I can open it. Plus there is no Security tab in the Properties window, which raises another eyebrow of "huh?"
Boot.Ini tab missing from System Configuration Utility when log into msconfig.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI went to msconfig and turned on safeboot with minimum startup programs. Unfortunately, I use an external monitor because my laptop screen cracked, thus the screen is not showing up on the external monitor. I cannot see a thing and I can't fix the computer to return to a normal startup. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP Home Edition OS.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIve recently had this problem with this vundo strain of trojans and tis located in my system volume information folder.. So i did a little researching and figured out that no virus remover will be able to remove it since windows wouldn't allow me to delete or remove it in the first place. Thus the alternate method being the turning off of the system restore function and thereby deleting all system restore points. Although i came across a roadblock in that even though i am the administrator on my computer i am unable to check or uncheck the turn of system restore option in the system restore tab in the properties of My Computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedComputer has been very slow in logging in and shutting down. Also my computer has been freezing for atleast 20 seconds or more until I have to just shut it down. I also found last night that my Malawarebytes scanner found this "Rogue Installer" which I deleted. My computer is still running slow to shutdown so I'm not sure if this program is still in. Actually, for a few months I had been having some trouble(intrusions) with some type of virus. I wanted to try to clean the computer on Safe mode. I tried numerous of times by clicking fast or holding down the f8 key for safemode but nothing happens. My second option was mscongfig box but I found there was no "BOOT. INI" option. I'm not sure if there is a way to restore this option?

I think it's a registry error. I looked where another forum "told me" to look, and I had different entries.
Everytime I try to run msconfig or registry editor, it pops up for a second and then closes immediately. They open, but close immediately so i get about a 1/2 second look.I restored my system to before this problem started -I'm running Windows XP Pro.
