View 11 RepliesI will start from the beginning, two weeks ago when my 6 month old computer ( a Compaq Presario, 120 GB HD, 512 RAM, Pentium 4, 2.4GH Processor) had a black screen showing disk boot failure one morning when I got up. I had left it on overnight, and it was fine when I went to bed. My brother feels certain it was hard drive failure, as it was making clicking noises, speeding up and slowing down, and finally quit. a Western Digital 120 GB, and he installed it for me. We installed the 7 recovery disks with Windows XP that is the original disks to the system. Windows booted and I proceeded to install Norton which came on the system, went online to get updates, and the computer locked up completely while getting updates.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source.When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer. In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized. I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted. Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive
View 2 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up

I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.
about two yrs ago my dad made a massive mistake of making two partitions on my laptop, and giving the C: only 2gigs of the partition, and the D: 28-29gigs. I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. I have the formatting disks, but it never goes to a screen asking me about my partitions, it just formats everything on my C: (my default drive), but keeps everything on my D: intact (games, files, etc.).
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.

restore and says part 1 and 2 of restore and it will shut down and restart and finish part 3 and 4. Problem is, it restarts in umbutu, because that is the first choice on the startup menu.
Older comp 9.2 gig hd divided into C 2.5 D 6.5. How do I format just the C drive so I can do a clean install. There isn't enough space to do a reinstall and windows won't let me format the boot drive from within.
View 6 Replies View RelatedFor some time I have been having problems booting up with XP; I don't get a BSOD but a page full of print asking which of 5 options it should use with Start Windows normally highlighted. None of the options worked and would just keep going round in a circle. I discovered that occassionally windows booted up and would madly do as much work as I could as well as running all my security programs. However these times have ceased and after a week of no Windows I decided to use the Reload disc to recover the system to factory mode. To my horror I now have exactly the same thing happening . Can someone tell me what is likely to be wrong with my system?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI frequently use the MSconfig file to uncheck programs to keep them from starting up automatically at windows boot up. However, its not too long before the programs reload themselves and start up again on boot up. Im guessing that using these programs for some reason they load themselves up at startup. Most notably is the yahoo messenger and quicktime programs. I dont want them loading at start up but everytime i do use them, they put themselves back in the start up routine. Is there anyway to stop them from doing this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt keeps doing strange things. If you click on recent documents, it says they aren't there, but they are. If you click on a file, the program comes up, but the file won't open until you click it again. That's only a couple of examples. I've reloaded office and it didn't help. So I decided to reload XP. It says I have a newer version on my computer that what is on the disk and if I load it, I will lose files and programs. I'm assuming it's a newer version becuase of all the windows updates. I also keep getting SYS32 ? errors, plus run time errors.

I can't work, and husband is out of work, looking for a job, so money is very, very tight. Anyone know of a free program that will fix all registry problems, or if I have to pay for a full program online which one is best, and about how much will we have to pay for it. Question I have is if I use the utility to reload the pc "as I bought it". will I get the same problem? This is the only screen I can get, other than setup for bios - which can still see the hard drive and installed peripherals. Don't have a floppy drive,
although I'll be getting one soon, in order to try a boot to that.
I lose usage of my mouse when I reboot my Windows XP Home Edition SP3 after the following actions:
1. registry clean up with Cleaner
2. disabling of one or more unncessary service(s) from within services.msc
I also noticed that when I reboot one more time the mouse issue goes away, but it reappears at the next reboot and so on (it appears every two reboots...).Each time I have been able to reverse changes OK by coming back to the System Restore point I had created before the changes.
so this laptop is running fine, nothing wrong, until one day, Matlab is opened up, and the computer blue screens and restarts.Upon restart, the stop code blue screen for Registry_Error comes up. Seeing how this was completely random, I was somewhat at a loss.The first thing I do is try to restore the registry, following Microsoft's detailed instructions.I could replace the hives with the old ones from the repair folder and then start windows fine, (except for having a retardedly old registry). Then I would copy more recent registry files from system volume and put them in the tmp folder and restart to the recovery console. From the console I would copy over the new files which should be the next step to windows booting and me running system restore
